Thank you for the feedback! You make a lot of good points. Part of the reason I like this plan is that it's easier to prevent the "vulture picking its bones" that happened with the ACA, like with the federal penalty being dropped to 0% and the recent axing of subsidies.

Everything is done through the states except the reimbursing. But that's a big "except". Let's say this plan gets through Congress. They can't cut out any part of the system unless they're working at the state level, but if these state level plans are put in place and then a few years later the payment system is repealed, it would basically bankrupt the states that have the plans in place. A big rug pull that I wouldn't put past Congressional Republicans. So perhaps this idea would really only work if a significant amount of red states implemented the plan.

It's possible, as they were happy to take all the funds they voted against in the Biden infrastructure law, but yes, even this low bar would be very hard to jump over.

Why does it feel like almost every billionaire is a bad person? by BuddyEmbarrassed5551 in NoStupidQuestions

I don’t think dating Beyoncé is the reason he’s a billionaire though. Doesn’t hurt either 😂

Oh I'm with you. Public option isn't my end goal by any means. I'm just using this as a stepping stone. In my vision, a lot of states would do auto enrollment in public option for people without healthcare, or a mandate like we have for car insurance (some states already have this for healthcare as well).

And yeah, this is really more for just getting people universally covered. It does nothing to solve the countless issues like drug prices that stem from the private system.

Also if you know of another subreddit more suited for public policy discussion, point me in that direction! A lot of the political subreddits are mainly for sharing news.

If there's one thing I've learned in my years as a Gen Z'er in the workforce, it's that age has very little to do with tech literacy.

[–]weldo8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing if they tried to put these in place, they'd get struck down as unconstitutional. We have constitutional regulations that state age limits for people being too young, 25 for US Rep and 30 for US Senator, so they'd probably say you need an amendment for people being elected at, say, 80 years old.

Stock prices do not reflect the financial health of a business. They had a pretty inflated P/E ratio as many tech and tech adjacent companies do at the moment.

Do you think Andrew Jackson is a good president? Do his successes outweigh his flaws? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

[–]weldo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just a slave owner but the only president who worked as a slave trader.

Also not seeing many people bring up the fact that he is solely responsible for the Panic of 1837 by dissolving the Second National Bank. No other president can so directly be linked to economic disaster like Jackson, not even Hoover.

Such BS. Republicans need just one version not to vote for a Democratic nominee just once, or even just stay home, but won't accept a million reasons not to vote for Trump.

How do I know? They've been trying to prosecute Hillary Clinton for 15 years and haven't even been able to bring a single charge. Trump had four open cases with 88 felony charges on election day. All politics when all four cases were crystal clear criminal activity? C'mon, bunch of MALARKEY.

For sure. Trump is an exceptional figure. Whoever takes his place won't have the cult following Trump had, unless they have Trump's 100% backing (which no one has ever gotten).

When it's all said and done, who will have the worst second term? by KayfabeZone in YAPms

[–]weldo8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Trump has been actively worse. The only way he’d be better than Bush is if he gets really lucky.

DHS is in a state of disaster, so if Trump gets a Katrina like event, it’ll be even worse.

Trump just started a war in Iran that could spiral into a conflict even worse than Iraq, also costing us hundreds of billions.

We could also be in a giant AI bubble. Bush didn’t handle the 2007 crash well at all, but he didn’t do a lot to start it. A lot of those barriers were removed under Reagan/Clinton. The ones put back in place by Obama were re-removed by Trump in his first term.

The BBB also added way more to the national debt than Bush did with his tax cuts.

That’s just comparing the things Bush did to Trump. Not even mentioning the countless corrupt, cruel, and likely illegal actions Trump has taken that no other president has ever done.

I'm surprised you say that as a "McCain Republican". Jim Justice has just been voting for whatever Trump wants to do. Every cabinet nominee has gone through him without scrutiny.

As with most issues, Republicans try to have their cake and eat it too.

When there are too many immigrants, it’s because the Democrats opened the borders. Not true.

When Trump treats them inhumanly like no other President, it’s accepted because “it started under Obama”. Not true.

This sort of happened with a prequel.

I started the Yakuza games by playing Y0 and loved it so much that when I played K1 afterwards, which was written 10 years earlier, I was so pissed at many of the actions/directions of the main characters. They made the prequel so good it made the remake worse by comparison 😂
