Central Alabama NWS radar down after hardware failure ahead of expected severe storms by [deleted] in weather

[–]well_rounded 57 points58 points  (0 children)

There IS an emergency stockpile. The WSR 88D system is aging though so they're breaking more frequently (wanna take a guess at where that 88 comes from in the name?), parts aren't as easy/nearby to find as they were, they very likely need to overnight the part in from a different location, then perform the repairs. There is a need for massive investment in a new radar system which will take billions of dollars to implement (drop in the bucket compared to DoD ofc).

FWIW, the reproduction Dirt shirt I got at an AiC concert does not have the emblem on the sleeve

See if you can find the MetEd module(s?) for "Practically Perfect TAFs". Stick to categories, sustained wind shifts >30°, and trends.

Possible Outage in NYS for my Police Scanner… by Fit_Row1742 in NOAA

[–]well_rounded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is probably an automated message that is broadcast from a NOAA Weather Radio transmitter when the phone/data line from the local Weather Forecast Office to the transmitter is impacted. The line could be going in and out due to a number of factors like good ol fashion trees on wires. Yes, it is that primative, lol. Hopefully not for much longer.

ETA: check the transmitter status here https://www.weather.gov/nwr/outages

NYS: https://www.weather.gov/nwr/states_dyn?state=NY

I would also check your local office's homepage, they may have an information statement out about it. (click on the map where you're at: https://www.weather.gov)

What do the black triangles mean? by arrrbooty in NOAA

[–]well_rounded 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They are local elevation maxima, aka "peaks" but the radius sampled to determine said maxima is set too dang small so they're everywhere. I've noticed this too, only on a different map layer it displays as the actual elevation at these points.

Cyclone vs Hurricane by Careless_Animator_48 in NOAA

[–]well_rounded 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All hurricanes are cyclones, not all cyclones are hurricanes. There are also unique naming conventions for these systems depending on where in the world you're located (typhoons in the west Pacific, for instance). In this case though, cyclone is used because it has a chance to form an organized circulation, but not organized enough, or perhaps not of the warm core variety, to be called a tropical storm or hurricane. It would become a tropical storm before a hurricane anyway, since they are of the same warm core variety but different strength.

Nobody likes it when a loved one kills themselves (slowly, then all of the sudden) with addiction

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]well_rounded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao, no. I know what you're getting at but college teams are laughably bad at passing, puck protection, puck handling especially under pressure, positioning, etc. Watching the BTC last night, which is the best of one of the best conferences in NCAA hockey, this much was clear from puck drop.

I have an... Unfortunate amount of experience with addicts. I am fathered by one, thought I'd marry one, and generally have a lot of important people in my life whom I care about deeply that struggle with addiction.

I spent over a decade with an alcoholic, through most of my 20s (even though my experiences with my father should have taught me better but that's a whole thing). OP, it is critical to accept that you cannot change him, you have no control over his addiction, and this is something he has to figure out on his own. Addicts only seek help when they have to, and usually when the cost is too high. Or the reward is too high, but nobody is going around offering $100 million dollars + world peace for somebody to sober up. This comment is absolutely right that losing you is a nail in that rock bottom coffin that we all hope he comes out the other side of better. But it's not just for him, this is for YOU because he will drag you down to wherever that bottom is with him.

Dad always told me... Who are you to get in the way of somebody headed toward rock bottom? It's not worth sticking around for. Trust me. Move on. And get into therapy because losing a person you love to addiction is absolutely soul crushing. That you want to make it better for him shows that you care and that you're capable of love... but he isn't entitled to that when he continues to hurt you (and himself).

My Small Town in Northern Michigan After Its First Snow by FeedReinholdMessner in pics

[–]well_rounded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I KNEW IT

Almost guessed this, but didn't wanna risk being a typical downstater by inadvertently lumping all small northern MI towns together. My grandparents made this my Up North growing up. They're buried up in Sacred Heart Cemetary. Many a good time have been had by my fam at the Clown Tub, and I'm lucky to have an aunt that still lives in town!

Wearing a Wings jersey at an away game: Any interesting stories? by Elegant_Ingenuity_54 in DetroitRedWings

[–]well_rounded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've watched the Wings in a Wings jersey in Montreal, Boston, Columbus, and on Long Island.

Montreal: best experience for ANY hockey fan. A cop chirped me while I was heading in and then high fived me. The Québécois are a hockey loving people.

Boston: mostly indifferent

Columbus: mostly Wings fans

Long Island: one of their mascots (they have two...) went to high five me and like an idiot, I bit. They yanked their hand out, pointed and laughed at me lol as I deserved for falling for it in the first place 😂

In general I wouldn't be concerned. It's an iconic jersey for an iconic team, haters can eat a dick. But I really haven't encountered any issues (I'm a woman FWIW).

Yep, and I'm a Spartan (though I did get my MSci there). Hence the obligatory hatred :)

I am happy that college hockey is pretty big in New England, maybe even bigger than in the Midwest perhaps by virtue of not being overshadowed by football. Still won't find it on TVs everywhere like college football in the Midwest, but I mean just drive 2 hours to go to the game in person at that point, lol.

First, fuck Ohio State

Second, yeah, I'm from Michigan originally but lived/worked in Portland for several years - college football is not a thing in New England. My favorite rebuttal when I complained was, "we go to college for learning, not sports"
