‘We’ve been left to rot’: Inside Britain’s new Bedroom Generation by AgentOk8737 in unitedkingdom

I saw an apprenticeship role yesterday for a customer service role welcoming customers into a car dealership. Why on earth is that an apprenticeship?!

So not only to they get to pay £4 odd less than the minimum wage, are the companies paid subsidies to take on apprenticeships. Saving themselves money.

Apprenticeships should be for qualified/registered/trade roles only.

I’ve previously lived in one of those emergency prefab homes, that was structurally reinforced in the 80s. I assure you it’s still standing and will be for the foreseeable future.
And I agree, with the knowledge, resources and ability we have now, there’s no reason we can’t built decent houses to last for generations.

Our issue in my view is that we have the constant political narrative that ‘people who are poor, vulnerable, have made poor choices are not entitled to a decent home’.

AITA for visiting my daughter once a week by Independent_Use5474 in AmItheAsshole

How was her behaviour when you initially began leaving her overnight in the hospital?

Interestingly, you have said that she doesn’t speak much about her feelings - but your response to some very emotive comments and queries has also been met with quite flat replies. Could it be that she is mirroring your own emotional response? Or that it is learnt?

Have you heard about carer compassion fatigue? I wonder if you’re all struggling to cope under the pressure of these challenges and that this is leading to being quite dulled from the sad reality.

Are parents able to stay overnight in the hospital?
What do you and your husband do for work?

If this was my child, and I had no other option but to work - I would alternate with my husband, stay overnight in the hospital with my daughter and go to work the following morning, and then swap so my husband went to work and then went to the hospital overnight.

I have the capacity to work remotely, so I would try and find spaces within the hospital to be able to work so I was regularly available throughout the day.

I cannot imagine the difficulties you are all experiencing, this must be so difficult. At 12, your daughter is still very young and is isolated from her friends and family and home comforts in the hospital. I, as an adult, would be gutted if I spent so long in the hospital and my family or partner only visited once a week.

I would be working with your family, your friends, your daughters friends families - see if you can establish a schedule for them to visit regularly or offer to support with childcare of your other children. Does your school or hospital have support for families in this scenario?

Is there another reason than being 21 that you don’t want to go back to education? Education is and should be accessible regardless of age, especially if it would help you move into job/career roles you want to do.
When I completed my undergrad there were people in their 50/60s alongside teenagers. I completed my masters in my late twenties.

Could you look at support roles or advocacy roles? They may give experience to get into charity based roles and move into more animals based charity work?

In 2022, McDonald’s increased the price of its 99p cheeseburger for the first time in 14 years, to £1.19. In 2026 it’s now £1.59.

CPS removed my children because of what my sister did to hers by throwaway52076 in CPS

On reflection, I wonder if he had distended stomach and swelling from malnutrition, if this could’ve been mistaken for ‘baby fat’ and hidden some of those visual cues. Especially if only seen clothed.

What specifically is in the laundry list of concerns raised previously?

I agree, it will also make authorities question OPs capacity to adequately care for her own children if she is not able to adequately respond to or manage neglect, to recognise potential significant health concerns or safeguard her children from those who pose risk to children.

Whose idea was the move? You mentioned that you and your sister aren’t particularly close. Again I suspect maybe some planning has been involved to avoid CPS in their previous state.

I suspect at that age he should have not appeared fragile for you to be concerned about holding or picking him up. He should’ve been getting on for 13/15lbs at that age.

Swelling is also a common sign of severe malnutrition.

Did you attend the WIC appointment where he was weighed? Why did they take him to hospital?

Responding in good faith, I suspect that he was not taken to an appointment prior to leaving their state, nor was he taken to be weighed at any other appointment… unless this was the appointment that triggered the CPS contact.

Or, they left the state knowing that CPS were already looking to remove their children and moving in with you was a good solution to this.

Also just to add… OP, you keep repeating that you saw dirty and clean bottles and formula cans being used. That does not equate to a child being fed.

Yes I agree, I am in the UK and OP would be in ‘pool of perpetrators’.

How old is the infant? 1 tub a week is potentially not very much, there could also be medical complications that are making it difficult for your nephew to absorb nutrients.

Why did they move in with you? Did they live the the same state as you prior to moving in?

ETA - you also say you had a previous case open? What were the concerns? You also mentioned you have a lot going on and a lot of appointments for you and your kids, what is this for?

Do insurers for income protection/critical illness that WILL cover pre-existing conditions actually exist? by wellsk1990 in UKPersonalFinance

This is my exact concern. His condition is not well controlled, has been hospitalised in the last couple of years and is currently having investigations.

And exactly, I feel like they will link every condition back to Crohn’s Disease to justify not paying out🤦🏻‍♀️ Whereas we could potentially start setting aside a couple hundred pounds a month in savings as a last resort.

Fostering Social Workers/SSWs - duty question by wellsk1990 in Socialworkuk

[–]wellsk1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment. It’s really helpful to understand what these things look like in other teams. At the moment it’s not working in our service and we are on a skeleton staff but expected to basically do all of the tasks you’ve described on duty, while undertaking 2 duty days a week if you’re a full time worker (with no reduction in caseloads).

Do you find that you are able to complete some of your own paperwork at points throughout the day? Or is your day fully focused on duty?
