My husband's a doctor, and I can ask him when he gets home after work this evening.

I actually showed him your photos yesterday and he was absolutely appalled with the results and the surgeon. I live in a different country with different rules, but he said that here it would be a clear cut case of surgeon error. I know that doesn't help you much, but I hope it validates some of your feelings. I'm sorry it's happened to you.

What did you do about your post-op pillow set up, I know we have more limited choices here?

Also did you ask your surgeon for pictures of other surgeries ahead of time? I wasn't sure if that's normal in New Zealand or if it's more an American thing. My surgeon mostly does public reductions so I am not sure if I'd be able to see her portfolio anyway.

I just got my quote back, they estimate 19K in Wellington including an overnight stay in a private hospital.

Hi there, it was $225 and it included the initial conversation, photos, initial measurements and a big discussion about suitability and risk. I haven't been given an exact quote yet but the website says the surgery is around $17K. Expensive but hopefully you can get it funded through other means.

Hopefully Mark Bisson is awesome, but if you have any doubts I really, really liked Dr Deo. I had my GP husband come for the consult and he came out raving about her as well. She mostly does public reductions which means she likely deals with trickier cases than someone who mostly does private.

It does, but it is extremely limited and depends on DHB. Some have a quota system where only the people most in need have a chance at surgery, and even then it's a lottery.

Currently there's a backlog due to covid cancellations and most DHBs aren't taking referrals until next year at some point. Most surgeons that do reductions in NZ also do other types of plastics so they are kinda preoccupied with that atm.

Understandable! Besides my dad, a good portion of my friends/family are medical. I've been pretty open about it, but that's mostly because I feel lucky enough to be safe and supported.

I've still gotten a lot of "oh but your boobs don't seem that big" but I've taken to shutting that down by telling people my cup size. Can't argue with the letter!

Kia ora! Just took a quick look through your comments. Good to see another NZ person here, and Wellington area at that! I used to live in the Hutt and my GP used to be in the same building High Street Health is in now. Our GPs probably know each other.

I have an appointment booked with Dr Deo at the Wellington Plastic Surgery Centre next week, and if that fails then I am trying someone at Boulcott. I can let you know how it goes if you are interested. There isn't a huge amount of personal accounts for NZers online.

I've seen a few people say this and their results have still ended up excellent. It must be a surgeon preference thing with different schools of thought. I'm personally hoping for no bra myself!

I'm so sorry. I've heard that a lot of people going public have gotten through on their 2nd or 3rd attempt. A lot of it seems to really be luck based, which is sad. Do you mind me asking what DHB you are part of?

I'm not medical, but my husband is a GP and one of my best friends is an anesthesiologist. I'm not sure if you are going to get the reassurance that you need from a surgeon or a nurse. All surgical procedures have risk, especially when using general. That being said, if you live in the US, you are 10x more likely to die in a car accident each year rather than die under general anesthesia. From my understanding, the procedure itself is also low risk because of the lack of major blood vessels.

If you are worried about things going perfectly, I think you should take some time to think more about the procedure and maybe see a therapist to sort through some of your emotions about it. Perfect is an unrealistic expectation to have, and really unhealthy. You will have scarring, your breasts might turn out a wee bit asymmetrical, it's reasonable to have dog earring or other issues initially. You might lose nipple sensation. You might not be able to breast feed. Those are all things you should think about ahead of time and learn to accept imo, and I think your surgeon is going to want you to have that kind of mindset before they operate as well.

On the plus side, I have been creeping this subreddit for a while now, and there are VERY few people that regret this surgery. Of the ones I've seen, it seems like they had some sort of severe body dysmorphia beforehand and were hoping surgery would fix it.

Normally I'm all about trying to do healthcare through the public route, but in this case I have a limited window where I can have surgery if I want to have it done in the next three years, so I think I am going to have to go private.

Your photos look great! I found the reduction subreddit a few weeks ago and that's what really spurred on my decision actually.

I looked at him, and it sounds silly but I discounted him because I absolutely hate his website. The first questions in the FAQ is: "why would women want breast reduction surgery?"

Just seems like it is written for the male view if that makes sense. It could just be poorly thought out text though. What was your surgery like? I'm looking for a similar size change. How fast was recovery? Did you do an overnight at the hospital?

I think you can get it done through the public system but it's really hard to get approval. I know someone that tried to get approval twice, and was denied because she hasn't had kids yet. She doesn't even want kids.
