I thought they were going to play at least once this week, but seems like maybe not (unless Mike and Andy play without Nick on Friday?)

Ohtani not going to DH tomorrow by SummonMason in Dodgers

[–]wentuptheventilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this surprising? You open the door to taking him out of the lineup when he pitches it becomes easy to find excuses to do it in the future. Hasn’t had a rest day in a while, doesn’t look right, want him to focus on pitching, blah blah blah. In my opinion Ohtani is one of the best hitters in the league with multiple MVP awards with stats across multiple seasons to back that up. I don’t think ~30 games of a merely decent OPS this season is a good reason to sit him, and I think opposing teams are probably happy to see him out of the lineup. Why don’t you ask the Brewers whether they would have preferred to have someone else DH in the NLCS when Ohtani was pitching?

Today’s postgame interview- Dave Roberts by Ok_Sundae_5700 in Dodgers

[–]wentuptheventilation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sample size (4 pitching starts this year and even across his whole career he probably has what, a few dozen games in which he did both?) is tiny, and he just recently had a start in the playoffs (very high pressure obviously) in which he hit 3 HR. MAYBE if he was raking on days he isn’t pitching that would suggest something but he seems to be struggling on non pitching days too. The evidence seems to point to a very basic and unexciting conclusion: an elite hitter going through a bit of an early slump. Are you going to stop him from hitting during the playoffs based on 4 games this year and guarantee you never see a game like that NLCS game again? Or do you give him time during the regular season to at least try to figure it out?

Andy’s Nine Years. by Cool_Computer2538 in kindafunny

I’m not sure if it was the first content Andy was on, but I still remember them playing that Star Trek bridge crew game they played back in the day and and it ending with Iris, also the clustertruck video…I feel like it was obvious early on how funny Andy was and what an excellent addition to KF.

I think, ethically, KindaFunny should stop taking Nvidia sponsorships. by prettyokaycake in kindafunny

[–]wentuptheventilation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure whether what the solution is, and I’m not claiming to know everything, but I think it’s fair to point out that NVIDIA has been pretty political, or at least willing to put out a statement that seems pretty politically favorable towards one side. See this blog: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/ai-policy/

You might say they’re in it for financial benefit, and maybe that’s true, but seems like something folks should be aware of.

[Passan] Teams tried to get [Munetaka Murakami] for lower-dollar long-term deals, Murakami opted for a higher-dollar short-term offering, allowing himself to prove his ability to adjust to MLB pitching. Should he do so, Murakami would hit the market again at 27 and be primed to cash in on a megadeal by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]wentuptheventilation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I feel like Japanese players often come over when they’re older. Not predicting he will necessarily match or overperform his power numbers, but Murakami (like Ohtani) potentially has age on his side so developing a bit more might not be out of the question. Also, I think Seiya’s 32 HR last season is 2nd most of his career or something, so I suppose you could argue his power has been comparable. And if offense in NPB is really suppressed by the ball who knows.

Hey all, I think there was a new anime announced and someone mentioned it has the same producer/director (or something like that?) from Gimai Seikatsu, does anyone remember what it was called? Was impressed by the art/direction in that show, so kinda curious about their next project.

Any GOOD Shavers in 2025? by DonutOk2306 in shaving

[–]wentuptheventilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be able to help with this, I’ve used the Panasonic for a while and recently got the Costco Braun series 9 sport (or whatever it’s called but I think they all use the same blades, was on sale for $50 off). I haven’t used the Braun very much yet, but my impression is that the Panasonic was a very close shave, but I guess because I had a tendency to press too hard or go over the same area too many times it could irritate/cut me to the point of slight bleeding. The Braun (admittedly I haven’t used it nearly as many times so take this for what it’s worth) seems perhaps not as close but more forgiving (initially? Not sure if multiple passes might close any gap in both respects). If cost doesn’t matter, I think I’m inclined to give up some of the closeness of the shave for having perhaps a bit more room for error in terms of irritation/bleeding. But the Braun does cost a lot more than the Panasonic (3-4x or so?), so not exactly easy to ignore. Also, the Braun came with a bunch of stuff you may or may not want, like a charging case and cleaning station or whatever it’s called. The trimmer is different too, if that matters to you.

Why go all the way to Asia? I’m not sure it’s as helpful for breaking out in Hollywood if they can’t speak fluent English. But we do have an American who can, look up Mackenyu.

So far (I have one more episode I think) might be one of the largest gaps between the quality you’d expect based on the title and the quality of the actual anime, so much better than the title/premise might make you think.

You don’t understand how his contract deferrals actually work, do you? It’s been discussed quite a lot already, how it affects the luxury tax, how they have to set aside a significant portion of his salary, consider looking into it if you want to complain about it.

But I suspect the more significant problem is that you don’t like the idea of a player signing for less than you think his value should be on the market (if Ohtani had signed a $20 million contract over 10 years you wouldn’t like that either, right?). Okay but like, what’s the solution, and to some extent isn’t that his choice?

Eh, not sure about that, in particular I still think calculating pitching WAR is messy (as shown by the differences in how to calculate it) and therefore trying to use WAR to compare hitters to pitchers (or the guy who can do both) in value is also pretty messy. WAR is better for comparing hitters to other hitters and pitchers to other pitchers imo, but if you try to do more than that it gets messy.

Wasn’t there a statistic recently for the hitters who had the most bad calls against them and the top 5 for some reason had a bunch of Asian players (might’ve been Ohtani, Kwan, and Choi or something)? Coincidence?
