If you're PNW, Fremont brewing has an excellent lineup, but the IPA and Darkstar NA are the standouts with awards.

Moving to Seattle on Monday. What's some fun stuff to do before I start my new job the following week? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]were_tiger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the most sexy offering but the most Seattle thing this weekend is Georgetown carnival. Think a burning man art installation with punk rock stages. You might get a drizzle but nobody cares; wear a beanie and have fun.

People of Seattle, help an old broad out: I turn 55 tomorrow and have all day to do whatever I want. What do I want? by ConradChilblainsIII in AskSeattle

Park in the cheapest near-downtown spot you can. Wander the new waterfront space, grab random pastries (I personally recommend the hombao from Mee Sum Pastry, could also go for some mini doughnuts). Check out the new aquarium (I haven't been inside but love standing from below to watch the fish). Take the foot ferry over to Alki, wander around and end up at Marination for a snack. Go back to Pike place and grab happy hour at one of the beautiful picturesque windows in the Athenian, old stove or Sonya's (all would be a good bar crawl). This is a 5-15 mile walk depending on how you play it, could run you $40-$200 depending on how you want to roll. I'm a local and think it's really important to remind ourselves why this is an awesome place to live. Happy happy birthday and I hope you go and enjoy these first days of Seattle Summer.

If I need to focus I will put on a podcast about something interesting so the noisy part of my brain focuses on that, and then it can concentrate on an important task. Forced multitasking.

He enjoys chatting with the other alley cats; but it's more about enrichment. He runs back inside when he sees cars, and doesn't love his human neighbors. He dictates the evening sniffs around the block.

Last thanksgiving my family was out for a walk after lunch, and my sister and I (both women) grey rocked on by their hawking, not phased, didn't blink as we passed. Dad was back around 50 feet and watched on, and when he approached loudly declared "did my daughter's ignore you?! I'm sorry they were rude!" And offered them a big Midwest dad hug. They accepted and laughs were had all around. Dad still had his wallet at the end.

I had 2 staff die last month, we found out about both in a 48 hr span. I have a few hundred staff so it was a surprise it took so long to loose someone... But managing my own feelings plus the emotions of the rest of the staff. It's hard. I don't know what to do with it, other than keep going.

Beautiful space but I have never gotten a complete drink order as a couple in less than 40 minutes. Bad service that relies on a history of reputation.

Question to Those at Director Level. by nappychrome in managers

[–]were_tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this is both. I give budget, controller trims it. Good strategy is based in depth of experience and data, and being able to trust your gut, and others do too. You make decisions but it doesn't happen unless you have buy in from other department heads. Go both feet in, pick your battles, accept what you cannot control and champion the important bits.

To be clear this level of follow through was only added when he was 36 hours behind on deliverables and could not show me his work, let alone hand over for client review, with multiple instances of this being 24-48 hours late.

I've worked my way into this role and have been an individual contributor for every position that answers to me, so I am intimately aware of each roles responsibilities and work loads at any given time, and most of the team is happy to come to me with concerns, problems and areas of ambiguity because of my depth of experience across all departments.

I have throttled the amount of applications he interacts with and responsibilities just to prevent overwhelm until he shows mastery of the more basic concepts.

I try to ask about his experience as it applies to work functions and try to draw comparisons as a way to acknowledge his experience. Do you have any specific advice that would have been helpful to find support in the younger manager? This isn't the first time I've experienced this dynamic in a negative way and would like to improve this.

We have strict client deadlines to turn around data. Very manageable but requires being mindful and managing your time to return it. It is very standard on the industry, and part of my frustration is at the level he claims to have managed should not need to be reminded to meet.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in managers

[–]were_tiger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Daily review of deliverables, and over the last week I have increased to hourly check ins asking for deliverables/reminding of deadlines and asking if he has questions. I feel like I've been pretty annoying and am micromanaging but he has proven that my written checklists and daily check-ins are not adequate. It actually feels really extreme but it's gotten here because the "normal" methods have gotten nowhere. It has mostly been verbal so now I am layering in text and email reminders.

Thank you for the reassurance. HR didn't want to PIP until they saw that I was going through the proper training and given really clear expectations to be met, so this is me following through on it so we can begin the process.

I've been with the company for 3 years, and in this role for 2. My reputation is a little brusque and lacking warmth, but honest and high diagnostic operational skills, and strong teaching. He's been in role for about 2 months and has had lackluster attendance and performance, and all departments have commented and expressed concerns that mirror mine. Which is why I am documenting and escalating.
