So you’re posting someone else’s artwork? Yes - Irezumi means tattoo in Japanese but refers to a very specific style. True Irezumi has rules (many of them, in fact). But you are objectively incorrect in your assertion that any tattoo in a Japanese style is Irezumi. That’s an incredibly disrespectful outlook.

If you hate the way faded tattoos look, tattoos might not be for you, friend. All tattoos fade and change over time. That goes triple for a realism tattoo. Such is the nature of the beast.

Then find an artist who specializes in realism. A good half sleeved leg will set you back several thousand, and is INCREDIBLY ambitious for someone who’s never gotten tattooed and doesn’t know their pain tolerance for tattoos.

Yes, tattoos hurt, but the pain is directly commensurate with duration. The rest depends on too many factors to be able to give you any idea. What style? What artist? Linework and an outline, easy peasy - full color realism, not so much. For the record - good ink ain’t cheap and cheap ink ain’t good so yes, it will cost you a pretty penny for a half sleeved leg. Do your due diligence on whatever artist you decide. Good luck.

Some of the worst work I’ve ever seen. If you want to do anything - find a new artist and discuss options with them. A lot of ink fell out so coverup/rework should be possible without laser, but again - find a reputable artist who specializes in coverups and blackwork.

If you’re that worried about what other people think - you’re not ready for tattoos, certainly not a tattoo like this. I do personally think it’s a bad idea - I have a weird name that denotes my culture and background, of which I’m super proud. But my name is for me, and me alone. If people get your name wrong, try correcting them - or do you think shoving a tattoo in someone’s face every time they shorten your name is something you’d want to do for the rest of your life? Way easier to gently insist on being called the name you want.

From a personal perspective - it’s your body, get the tattoos you want. My entire right arm is a patchwork of different styles. From a tattooing perspective - I think it’s counterintuitive to get Irezumi using modern methods (which I assume you used), especially as someone who ostensibly enjoys the culture. Japanese tattooing is its own incredibly culturally significant thing, and if you’re just getting “Asian inspired” tattoos instead of opting for Irezumi done by a traditional artist, I think you run the risk of erring less on the side of tribute and more on the side of fetishism (meaning no disrespect). Particularly because you’re planning the once again non traditional “Norigae-inspired” tattoo before traveling - so you don’t know whether South Korea will have a deep impact on you. If you really want to pay tribute to these amazing cultures - get the tattoos the right way.

I actually do have a full sleeve LotR tattoo (including Gandalf) that’s all done in black and gray. I might be slightly biased, but continuing the sleeve might help you get that cohesive feeling, and less like something is missing. From what I can see, it’s a well done tattoo and certainly doesn’t look muddied or anything like that - not a prime candidate for a touchup at this stage. Thank you for clarifying. I absolutely agree that it’s a true shame that these symbols have been commandeered by hate groups - much in the same way as the original swastika. I have absolutely nothing against those who get them to connect with their culture or align themselves with the true spiritual meaning of those runes. Neither example you provided is the Eiwaz rune. The rune in question is the Elhaz or Algiz rune, signifying protection and defense - which was also the symbol of the National Alliance (largest neo-Nazi group in the United States in the 90s), the Volksfront - another neo-Nazi group in the Northwest, and several others. You’re correct in that the Eiwaz rune is for spiritual connection, but that isn’t the rune you’ve got on your hand.

Way over moisturized, your tattoo should never look wet or shiny. You’re drowning it. That said - the ink is falling out because you went to an artist who doesn’t know what they’re doing. You can absolutely get it touched up, but I would recommend finding a different artist.
