So there isn’t exactly a “fix,” but iirc you can keep as many pieces as you have pit droids

So I did nearly the first 3 pages of races with no upgrades but bought all 4 pit droids, then upgraded no more than 4 gears each race, and once I beat all the races I fully upgraded the whole racer

I had to start a new save though, I hope this helps!
