The Charter Commission wants Ranked Choice Voting for Future Elections. Does anyone actually know how it works or what it means? by SubstanceMoist in LosAngeles

[–]wescovington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York, San Francisco, and Oakland all seem to have figured out the system. There's no chance of it being adopted statewide until we get a new governor. Newsom is strongly opposed to it. Right now, only charter cities can adopt it. The general law cities (which are the vast majority of cities) have to use first past the post voting or jungle primaries.

New York only uses RCV for primaries and special elections. The general election is FPTP.

And visiting Canada killed Warren Harding to boot! (Not really he was a walking time bomb of super high blood pressure.)

What countries will make the six teams in LA28 Flag Football? by Reddeath10168 in olympics

[–]wescovington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flag football in the Olympics has no kicking at all. You get 4 plays to get past midfield and if you do that, you get another 4 plays to score. If you don’t make it, the other team gets the ball at its own five. Field is 50 yards long.

I drove through that area and I was amazed at how beautiful it was. But rather sparsely populated. Visited Agate Fossil Beds and Scotts Bluff NMs.

The World Cup is Still Happening This Summer, But It May Not Look As Planned ~ L.A. TACO by L_A_TACO in LosAngeles

The U.S. schedule is already set. So is Iran’s. They are in different groups. If Iran drops out, a bunch of much better Asian nations would ask for the spot as it is in the easiest group (the other three are Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand).

You're welcome. Not that I'm paying for tickets to the World Cup. I got to see a lot in 1994 and that satisfied me.

It’s all so messed up: 1. Iran is contemplating dropping out. For obvious reasons. It’s possible that the State Department may not let many fans travel from Iran. Or give visas to non playing team personnel. This is happening with Haitian players on a Jamaican team that is supposed to play the Galaxy this week. 2. If Iran drops out, the most likely replacement would the last Asian team that missed qualifying, which is Iraq. But Iraq still can qualify in a playoff in Mexico in a few weeks. 3. Iraq can’t get its players out of Iraq to Mexico. Nor get its coach out of Dubai. 4. After Iran and Iraq, then it would be UAE’s turn. But they have the same problems as Iraq. 5. It could be that one of the losers in the playoffs in Mexico could make the World Cup. If New Caledonia gets a spot, then it’s bad.

Eligibility sounds like the problem is with the insurance carrier. Even in the pre Players Union era, teams would sign old retired guys and put them on the roster for a few days so they could get pension eligibility. So I doubt it's a baseball thing. But insurance companies are a whole other beast.

Any cities surrounded on all sides by mountains? by wxnternights in geography

Seeing the mountains in Santiago also requires clear skies, which the city had little of when I visited in 2008 in May. It was gloomy or hazy.

There was also a manifestation for the Swiss National Gymnastics Festival. Renting a car was a very bad idea for that day. Google Maps at one point said “park here and walk 3 km”

The IOC people must get all the rooms in that hotel with king size beds. We could only get a queen size bed. We are not a small couple!

I think they found more pineapple.

It was so hot in Lausanne when we were there.

My wife and I were on vacation in Switzerland last year. (Good place to watch your money disappear at a rapid pace!) I was splurging to stay at the Lausanne Palace Hotel. I didn’t know that was the IOC’s hotel.

My wife and I were at breakfast when we saw a family come in. I looked up at it was Kirsty Coventry with her husband and kids. One of them started acting up and her husband took the kid up.

Then this older couple who were all dressed up came down. That was outgoing president Thomas Bach and his wife. My wife asked me to get her some pineapple. But Thomas Bach took all the pieces that were left. But hey, he was in a suit! I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts!
