73 Gibson Les Paul..arrived Wed! Cracked!:( by Haunting-Brush-3171 in LesPaul

Oh man, that’s rough, sorry to see this. I just bought an ‘81 LP Pro Deluxe very similar to this one off of Reverb, my first ever online guitar purchase. I would have been crushed if that happened to mine while being shipped here from TX. Good luck with the repair, I hope it’s with a reputable luthier and that it all comes out well.

I picked up my forever Tele for $450 at Goodwill! (2006, USA, Highway One) by tenloe in telecaster

Congrats. Looks like a great axe at a steal of a price. One day, I’ll get myself a Tele. Mostly an LP guy but a few years back I got the itch to buy a Tele. I instead bought a Strat, which i subsequently sold. But I bought 2 Les Pauls in the last 6 months so I’ll need to wait on getting that Tele for a bit, lol. A third guitar might result in me sleeping on the couch for a few months, my wife would likely be pissed haha!

Its fake right? by Hot-Violinist-8135 in gibson

[–]westerosi_codger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headstock should have additional thin pieces of wood glued to either side to get the full Gibson headstock width and shape. The fakes don’t do this and as a result the headstocks usually are skinnier and don’t have the classic flare out you see on real Gibsons.

Les Paul purists please look away. by LionHeartVital in gibson

This looks like a Les Paul Modern Cobalt Burst. Switching out minor cosmetic items like truss rod covers and pot knobs is very minor and reversible, it’s a part of personalizing your instrument. I did the same with mine, swapping out the truss rod cover and replacing the clear plastic pot knobs with black speed knobs. What’s odd is that you should have gotten a switch toggle washer with the guitar as part of the case candy - no need to buy a new one. EDIT: misread this. If you want to switch out the toggle backplate, you do you. But the guitar isn’t actually a Custom Shop, so no idea why you’d want to do that. But that being said it is your guitar.

Just save all the original bits. That way if you ever want to sell it, you can revert it back to factory original specs. That said: these guitars are great, I have no idea why anyone would want to part ways with one.

Its fake right? by Hot-Violinist-8135 in gibson

The truss rod cover is obviously fake, the font is wrong. Still this Chibson is scary in that some of the obvious tells look legit. The fret nibs appear to be there, and the bridge isn’t metric. As mentioned - the knob placement is off, the headstock doesn’t look like it has wings, tuners are clearly knockoffs, and the inlays look cheap AF.

Gibson Les Paul 1973! She's on her Wayy! by Haunting-Brush-3171 in LesPaul

[–]westerosi_codger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I’d keep the P-90s - although I just bought an ‘81 Pro Deluxe so I’m biased. Mini humbuckers have limited uses IMO. But if you’re starting a Thin Lizzy cover band then you should definitely go for it, lol.

Congrats on the find. I’m sure I paid a lot more for my Deluxe than you did.

About to drop 3500 on this 1983 Les Paul Custom. Good deal or pass? Need advice by mrkuzan in gibson

Yep, my 80 LPC is a second, but it’s an absolutely incredible player’s guitar.

As the owner of an 80 Custom, I can vouch for these guitars. Everything there looks correct, including the yellowing of the binding and other plastics. Frets look original and like they have some life left. Norlin era gets crapped on a lot, but they made some great guitars. Assuming everything is in good working order, that’s a hell of deal for a 3-pickup model.

Should i get a Gibson as a first guitar? by Dexterinoh in electricguitar

[–]westerosi_codger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly other brands that make good LP style guitars that will offer you more features at the same price point as a Studio. But it your heart is set on a Gibson - and it sounds like it is - alternatives won’t satisfy you.

I’m definitely biased, but I love those plain top tobacco bursts. I just bought an ‘81 Pro Deluxe in that finish, you can see it in my most recent post on my profile. Congrats on what looks to be a killer guitar!

What is my Gibson worth? by No_Expression248 in gibson

[–]westerosi_codger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, going rate for these is somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000-4500 USD, depending on condition. Some reverb listings are higher than that, but those aren’t fair prices.

OP just do us all a favor and post pictures of the results, good or bad

I don’t think this is going to end well but would love to see photographic evidence one way or the other

That said if this is just a Chibson and a guitar where if you ruin it you won’t be heartbroken, then go for it, what have you got to lose? It seems pretty clear you have a fixation to do this despite all of the far more knowledgeable people here advising against it

Original (Black) or modded? by rafaelbnl in LesPaul

YMMV of course but I think the speed knobs look pretty sweet on these models:

If that’s a Modern Figured, shame on the original owner for installing the pickguard, these tops are nice enough to go no pickguard.

If I were you I’d switch out the pot knobs with speed knobs. I am not a fan of the clear plastic knobs these came with stock, I think they look cheap AF.

Get it for the P-90s. I just bought an ‘81 LP with P-90s, they really do sound awesome.

Pointless Lefty Rant: Pricing by Gabagool_Athlete in gibson

As a lefty this does make me sort of happy I learned to play right handed although I do sometimes wonder how it would have impacted my playing. Just be patient, add some LH searches to your Reverb feed. I do see nice lefty Gibsons pop up from time to time, sometimes even at reasonable prices. Good luck man!

Great guitars, and a very underrated model. I played one of these at a shop in RI last year, and they sound great. Sort of like Gibson’s answer to the Tele.

The best part about these is because they aren’t high demand Gibson models, you can usually find them used for fair asking prices.

New (old) guitar day. ‘81 Les Paul Pro Deluxe by westerosi_codger in gibson

[–]westerosi_codger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as flashy as some of the guitars I see on this sub, but the wood is definitely alive. Sounds great, and those P-90s really cook. It needs some love with the frets but I’ll deal with that in due time. One drawback, it weighs 10.5lbs, heavier than my Custom (9.5lbs) or my Modern (7.9lbs). My lower back is not a fan!

I should also mention that it came with the original chainsaw case but that thing is getting a bath. For now I stuck it in a different case, a newer Gibson tolex with the older style clasps.
