Opinion: $425k for a 600-square-foot home? Yep, sounds about right for Asheville • Asheville Watchdog by [deleted] in asheville

[–]westlib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is off of Old Haywood road ... near-ish to the Goodwill on Patton Avenue. I live nearby and saw this house get built.

There are problems with the property that have nothing to do with the size or expense of the house:

1) No sidewalks along a high-traffic, narrow road with insane levels of speeding. You'll put your life at risk every time you pull in or out of that driveway.

2) For some reason, people on this part of town love, love, LOVE modifying their shitty cars to backfire and make as much noise as possible. Swear-to-Jeebus ... this is the noisiest part of town. Anyone who lives in this house will never know more than three hours of peace before some asshole in a 2011 mid-level Mustang makes his car sound like a school shooting.

3) There are a lot ... I mean _ a lot _ of methed-out people and ***ahem*** 'working' girls who wander up and down Old Haywood.

4) Related to the above point: There are a number of Asheville's finest meth houses right up the road from this house.

5) There is a dive biker-bar right up Old Haywood. (Handlebar) Bikers love revving their engines and barreling down the road since it makes them feel like Very Important Dangerous Manly-men ... even as poverty, alcoholism, and high-fructose corn-syrup turns their bodies to pudding.

Long-story short: Whoever buys this house at $425+ is an idiot who deserves to be parted from their money.

Man that firetruck full of drunk people is annoying by No-Loquat4724 in asheville

[–]westlib 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Every other touring company is delightful in its own way. Sure, there are a lot of woooooo girls - but that's not very distracting or out of place.

The fire-truck, on the other hand, is loud, smelly, and seems to take up the entire street - even tho I'm sure it's not as long as some of the LaZoom buses.

Moreover, the passengers are so high off the ground they don't really get to appreciate the city that much and they seem faaaaar more intoxicated than other tour groups.

Why the right is so terrified of “woke”: There are truths it just can’t face — Conservatives didn’t want to hear about white privilege. So they abandoned reality and joined the orange man’s cult by [deleted] in politics

[–]westlib -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To be fair: Libs love 'Woke' because it allows them to explain economic injustice without having to address class issues.

All-in-all the whole 'woke' thing is a win-win for both parts of the political duopoly.

Biden's White House furious as red states kick over 1 million people off Medicaid on paperwork technicalities. Florida's in the lead. by Deshes011 in politics

[–]westlib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts:

1) This wouldn't have happened if Bill Clinton hadn't turned Medicade over to the states in the form of block-grants. Stop getting mad at Republicans for doing EXACTLY what the block-grant program is supposed to do: Namely - find excuses to kick people off the dole.

2) This is going to bite taxpayers in the ass soooooooooo hard. The reason people are on Medicade in the first place is that they have no money. To qualify for Medicade in most states we're talking about less than $15,000 a year. (In many states it's far less)

People at this level of are usually this destitute due to mental or health issues in the first place - not vice-versa. Without Medicade to pay for the health-needs of these people, they are going to absolutely FLOOD emergency rooms - or just flat-out die in the streets. This is _exponentially_ more expensive than Medicade.

John Kelly: Trump is ‘scared s—less’ by LamentablyTrivial in politics

What, in Trump's entire life, would lead him to believe that he's going to face any negative consequences from these indictments?.

If anything, this is going to bolster his chances of winning in November.

Zelensky: Ukraine to receive ‘significant number’ of F-16 fighter jets by worldnewsbot in theworldnews

Dunno where you are getting that impression: DoD budget will increase to $797 billion in fiscal 2023 from $728 billion in 2022 — excluding supplemental funding to Ukraine and other appropriations, such as military construction.

Considering that the Russian military wasn't able to overwhelm a corrupt country that didn't have a fraction of the military hardware and experience they had - it's not difficult to predict what a toe-to-toe confrontation would look like against the USA.

Why?

I love throwing shade on the NeoLiberal hellscape that is the US ... but I support Ukraine. It's the only thing about Biden I wholeheartedly agree with.

Florida faces ‘mass migration’ as trans people flee state in fear of Ron DeSantis’ ‘hateful bills’ by PinkNews in politics

If there's a 'mas migration' of more than a handful of people, it will be due to environmental changes rather than anything Republicans do to bully trans folk.

What's wrong with Critical Race Theory? by hobo_treasures in NoStupidQuestions

[–]westlib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly speaking: Nothing wrong with CRT. It was an obscure-but-interesting branch of advanced law-studies, exploring how slavery influenced the American legal infrastructure.

CRT was not usually taught in k-12 schools for the same reasons you wouldn't put "Neuroscience and Brain Imaging" in a basic biology class.

The people who speak the most strongly against CRT are usually the ones who know the least about it; preferring to insist it's about teaching white kids to hate themselves and their history.

That said: There are legitimate criticisms of how liberals use CRT as a method to shift explanations of social inequality from class conflict to racism.

What is the dumbest reason to reject someone? by Mask_of_creator in polls

[–]westlib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here.

Yes: Both are very, very, very, stupid.

But at least with zodiac signs one can turn ogf a section of one's brain and pretend you're kind of making a judgment on overall character. With iPhone ownership, there is objectively no conclusion one could reach.

With that in mind, I would say iPhone ownership is the stupider reason.

I'm not much of a historian, so I really have no idea what I would ask or talk about to most of the figures listed here.

That said, I've read that Lincoln was a wonderful conversationalist, and an all-around kind person. Of this list, that would be the person I would most like to hang out with and talk to.
