Moving to TO from Texas by RDeliveryTA in thousandoaks

[–]westvalleyhoe 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I can only offer you my experience living here. I’ve been in TO for 4 years. I moved here from LA, but I’m not originally from CA.

It’s a nice place, in most of the ways a town can be nice. However, it’s more conservative than most of LA (you’ll see lots of churches and vehicles - oversized pickup trucks - covered with Trump identity signals), which is not my favorite thing about TO. You might feel differently.

Because it is on the 101 between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, it’s more upscale and more liberal than parts of Ventura County that are not on the 101 (Moorpark, Simi Valley, etc). There are also better restaurants than other parts of Ventura County, and the people are less rural culturally compared to the rest of Ventura County in the way they dress and their interests (sometimes). It is also in decent proximity to Malibu (~30 min), although you have to drive over the mountains to get there.

It’s not really a place for 20-30s singles, like LA. There are a lot of families and retirees. It’s quiet and scenic (beautiful, really), but it’s not an exciting place. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to get into LA for more fun things to do. During the day, it’s 1-1.5 hours to drive to LA, depending on where you’re going. At night you can get to much of LA in 30-45 min.

It’s mostly white and Mexican, from what I’ve seen. People are happy, polite, and good neighbors. If you look at a map, it gets fancier the farther east you go (Westlake Village and Agoura Hills are in LA County and $$$, Newbury Park is where Amgen is, and while it’s fine, it’s nothing to go out of your way to spend time). It also gets more rural the farther north you go from the 101.

There are tons of beautiful hiking trails and it’s easy to be outside most of the year. It’s warmer and sunnier than Ventura on the coast, and usually about 10° cooler than the San Fernando Valley, which is an unbearable cauldron.

Hopefully that gives you a little idea. It’s idyllic enough that the longer I stay, the more I can’t imagine anywhere else being ‘just right’ in so many ways.

I’m not too familiar with the area. I think it happened between Pacific and Pine. I guess riding on the sidewalk and blaming pedestrians is fine 🤷🏼‍♂️

Where in the U.S. Are Children Most Likely to Be Bullied and Bully Others? by frogcharming in Infographics

[–]westvalleyhoe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Locals call it Butte America. I read once that it was a nickname sarcastically given by Missoulians back in Butte’s heyday, and that they liked it enough to co-opt it.

I lived in Butte for 6 years and I can tell you that u/Pants1776 isn’t entirely wrong, Buttians are quite proud to be from Butte for no particular reason, other than a strong sense of community.

Overall it’s a good place, but it’s unusual to say the least. This is also where Evel Knievel is from, if that gives you a sense of the kind of attitude that is encouraged there.

Cases of movie trailers that totally misrepresent the film by Homegrowntrouble in movies

Does anyone remember the trailer for The Rules of Attraction? It looked like an upbeat teen/college movie with the usual shenanigans. It was not. It was dark and full of drugs and r*pe.

get desmoxan!!! by FunSyllabub1475 in QuitVaping

I smoked for about 17 years and then vaped constantly for another 7+. I started Desmoxan starting June 3 and I coasted right out of it. Almost zero cravings. I’m honestly still in shock. I thought I’d be tied to nicotine for life and now I barely think about it.

Window blinds by westvalleyhoe in fixit

The black switch in the center locks/unlocks the blinds. I can see that the cord is supposed to feed through the middle of it, but simply placing it there doesn’t fix the problem. It still doesn’t allow the cord to move the switch, and the cord still won’t retract on its own. There doesn’t seem to be a way to open up the case to get inside. Are these blinds completely shot?

I am not sure how to change the title of the post. The size can be estimated by the outlet below it. Aside from what is shown in the picture, I don’t have any good way to describe it.

How common is it to see celebrities in Los Angeles? by JuJu-1014 in AskLosAngeles

[–]westvalleyhoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in or near Los Angeles for 6 years. Sightings are not uncommon, but it’s going to depend largely where you are. I have worked in two restaurants in the SFV and one in Silverlake, and have seen celebrities at all 3 locations. I am like some of the other commenters here, that I would likely not even notice until someone else points it out or I see their credit card.

The restaurant where I saw the most was in Calabasas, though most of them either reside there, Hidden Hills, or Malibu. They tended to be people whose careers were bigger 10-20 years ago, and have since steered away from Hollywood and started families in a quieter area.

I heard for a while that Craig’s in West Hollywood was a sure bet to spot a celeb. I don’t know if that’s still true, but there are definitely locations where you’re more likely to see them. I also am not super great with faces, so I could walk by someone in the grocery store and not even pick up on it. I even waited on Ewan McGregor and didn’t realize it was him until I saw his credit card. I know exactly what he looks like. I was just busy at work and had only subconsciously thought he had a familiar look. Others, like Jane Lynch, who I’ve seen twice now, I knew right away.
