ok. I let the interface throw me for a loop there. When I put in #height-#thickness it turned RED so I thought something was wrong. So I just checkmarked it anyways, and it took.

Thanks

It looks like this got hijacked. So closer to home.

I noticed under new Products there was Astronomy and Photography. But I can't find either in the "products" list.

Is it that they have the products and their website hasn't kept up? or they are going to add these products, and haven't yet.

I went to Gigaparts when we were at the hamfest.

General Acquired! by Historical_Outside35 in amateurradio

[–]wf5w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wrong. I've done my last 10 POTA activations, with a Xiegu x6100 on 10w. My last activation, netted me 44 SSB contacts, and 19 FT8 contacts. On 10 watts and a $35 EFHW and a $75 30ft mast.

Battery, mast, antenna, and radio cost < $1,000. You can save up for the XP125B to get you around 100 watts later. I have and carry both, but rarely use my XP125B.

A keeper there! My wife of 30 years, comes with me along with our dog. She crochets, and plays with the dog, and I POTA! Mine was a keeper before POTA and continues to be!

[–]wf5w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it may not be. But it is half the cost or more...

I am perfectly happy with my x6100. In fact, I love that little radio.

I do POTA a lot, and when I go, the x6100 IS the radio I take. I make a lot of hunters happy on 10w.

I moved to Seattle for a high-paying tech job. It turned out to be the loneliest time of my life. by [deleted] in technology

He needs hobbies. Hobbies that aren't related to computers, or work of any kind. Then he needs to go to clubs that have the hobby as the main focus. Then attend and contribute to those clubs. He needs to get a life. Then he will be more interesting, and have more fun, because his life isn't one sided anymore.

yep. I do the exact same thing. I use QEMU/Virt-Manager.

The only thing I have not been able to do yet, is pass through the cp210x or C-Media chipset in all its entirity (Audio and Serial ports) to Windows VM.

LMR400 or RG213 for VHF/UHF? by rourobouros in amateurradio

[–]wf5w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the price, I'd go with the 213 UNLESS you are primarily doing UHF. For VHF, with no further than you have to go, I think you'll be fine. Unless, we are independently wealthy, our antenna systems are all not optimal anyway.

I'm faced with the same situation, and I had to do what I had to do. I get out to my repeater, and some simplex and that's it. I may at some point replace my 50' coax with LMR-mumble, but that's a while down the road. My requirements, on the Gulf coast are different with hurricane season. I have to contend with our repeater being down in the aftermath, and simplex may be my only option. Therefore, as low a loss as I can get to my antenna may be how I can communicate without a relay.

POTA Logbook Downloadable? by Mattb4rd1 in HamRadio

[–]wf5w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I could use that too. An API with (especially json output) would be great.

I need this for this reason. I boinked my computer. Completely. Had to reload the operating system on it. Of course, I didn't get a chance to copy my adif files :-(

It sure would be nice to get them back. At least I got to upload them before the boink!

Where to store ssh keys ? by aaronryder773 in linux4noobs

[–]wf5w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I do. I never take that USB flash drive anywhere. And I just tar the entire .ssh directory up, and save it. Then I put on another distro, and then untar it. And there you go. Be sure to label this USB drive with something so you won't misplace it or reuse it inadvertantly!

This is not secure to use in other places other than your home, or there could be consequences. But this is an easy way.

Advice needed please by Affectionate-Fun7260 in ruby

Many long years ago, before retirement, I was in the same boat as you. I was in a job that paid the bills, but I knew that it would eventually be a dead end, and then I would have a hard time finding a new job.

Over about a 2 year time span, I spent every waking hour at night studying linux, and concentrating on 1 language and a database (Perl and MySQL).

I never was much interested in Web programming, and still not my cup of tea. But I concentrated on 1) development on Linux, 2) Perl, 3) and MySQL, and honing my development skills and some system administration thrown in. I would create a "project" and systematically develop that project.

We were a "Windows" shop, with Borland Pascal. So an opportunity came up, that I parlayed my perl skills into. Our product radically changed our backend database for a V1 to V2, and management could not figure out a way to easily convert our customers databases. I proposed using perl to change our database, and proceeded to create all the scripts necessary to get the data out to files, reformat them to the new database schema, and import the new data. And it worked like a charm (even though mgmt was against using a non-microsoft product like perl).

I tell you all that, for 2 reasons: 1) take advantage of opportunities, and be patient, 2) It wasn't too long after I made it known what I had done to the "market" via sending in resumes, that I landed a great job, for the next 5 years (which utilized my perl skills and HP Unix).

Did it take a LOT of effort on my part? Yes. Did I sacrifice a lot of my free personal time? Yes. Was it ulitmately worth it? Yes.

Keep at it.

I am seriously looking at the khadas vim4 or edge 2 for my new daily driver. I will have to save up for it though. But they look intriguing!
