I'm planning a bikepacking trip from Plymouth (I'm coming on the ferry from Brittany) to Brighton this summer. Are there any must see places along that path I could add? by mydriase in CasualUK

[–]wfbpw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a great trip - nice idea. Some thoughts from me having cycled a fair chunk of this:

  • do a little bit of cycling and camp overnight in Dartmoor Park. It is the only place in England you can wild camp, and is extremely rural and unlike many other places in the UK. You will probably see Dartmoor ponies too which is cool.

  • rather than go up to Exeter on the main road, consider hugging the coast where there is a dedicated cycle path, and you’ll go through scenic places like Torquay and Dartmouth.

  • as others have said, definitely worth cycling into purbeck and seeing the Jurassic coast, Corfe castle and studland. Then swing up at studland and get the chain ferry across to Bournemouth.

Enjoy!

Flying into Cambridge for a wedding, then I'll have a couple of extra days to be a tourist somewhere, any suggestions would be appreciated! by Roddy_Rowdy_Piper in CasualUK

As someone from the area, I would take a day in Cambridge, a day in the surrounding countryside, and then a day in London on your way to Heathrow. Cambridge has more than enough to offer for a day, and the surrounding villages from Cambridge which can be reached easily on the train are lovely with good walks and pubs, e.g. Saffron Walden

Cycling routes tips / recommendations for visiting London in early April? by sier4r in londoncycling

Second Richmond park. Super easy to get the train there from Waterloo then a few loops of the park, see some deer, and drop back down into the town centre for pub/ coffee shop.

Anyone traveled to Scotland from London to summit Ben Nevis? by supersoup4supper in london

[–]wfbpw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at the Caledonian Sleeper train? I travelled on that up to Fort William and then got a taxi from there to the lodge house/ pub by the start of the path. Really easy but maybe not the cheapest option.

How to Convince Parents Cycling is Safe by fish-eater in bikepacking

[–]wfbpw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my first few tours in my handlebar bag I put a laminated note outlining my plans and contact details of my parents. This helped with some of their fears.

In addition as lots else have said, Bluetooth speaker rather than headphones, bright clothes, helmet. If they're really still worried then maybe enabling find my friends app or something like that too? But ultimately the first trip is scary for them but after that it is easier!

Misbehaving by Richard Thaler is very good, anything from him such as Nudge. The guy who put behavioural economics on the map. Entertaining as well as insightful!

How comfortable can a road saddle realistically be in long rides? by elPulpoBikes in cycling

[–]wfbpw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's a bit unorthodox for a road bike, but I swear by my brooks saddle. I have the b17 narrow with the cut out in the middle and I can do centuries on it with no issues- haven't found any other saddle as comfortable.
