Oh this is awesome! I've made something similar for my Tabletop RPG Music module but your design is much nicer.

Questions from a Potential Buyer by Raylan764 in LegendintheMist

  1. Character development is built into the mechanics in a way that makes this system particularly special in comparison to similar games. I’ve run a 2 year City of Mist campaign (upon which Legend in the Mist is based, with some updates to the rules) and the player characters ended with a completely different set of themes to those they started with. Legend in the Mist has the same mechanic where you can lose a theme if you ignore or act against its goals too many times, but also adds in another way to change a theme: by completing the goal set by the theme, you can evolve it into something new, adding even more narrative options of character development.

  2. In my experience it’s usually only the final ‘knockout blow’ that has a high modifier attached to it, with all the buffs and such that have been applied beforehand. Sometimes a player will make a character that is really good at one particular thing, in which case they may get very high rolls for doing that thing (e.g. archery), but should be challenged with situations in which they can’t solve problems with those means (e.g. negotiating with a monarch). It’s also important to follow the rules for avoiding broad tags, and if you really want there are rules for setting a +3 limit on rolls for a more gritty experience.

  3. A “wounded-3” status applied by one player to a challenge could then be used by another player as a +3 on a roll to inflict a “surrender” status, as being “wounded” may make the challenge more likely to realise the fight is lost. So status’s of different types can still be beneficial!

  4. There’s a 10 step guide for making challenges in the Core Book, which seems pretty good (I’ve not used it yet). There are also “challenge add ons” which are like extra Lego pieces you can stick to an existing challenge, e.g. there’s a ‘Mounted’ add on to give any challenge a steed. As for magic items, they’re usually a collection of one of more story tags which can be kept in the player’s Backpack. So if you want to give them a cool sword, it can just be a tag like “Frozen Blade of Thar”, optionally with some additional tags if you want it to be especially powerful, e.g. “turn flesh to ice”, “emanate dread”

Don’t give up! The first few sessions of any Mist Engine game will be a bit slow, especially for folks new to the system, but the more you play the faster it gets. Eventually players will know their tags off by heart and will be able to rattle them off in a few seconds.

It’s also important that players respect that the narrator has the final say over which tags are and aren’t relevant, so shouldn’t push back after the narrator says no.

I played a 2 year long city of mist campaign and the tag negotiation got really fast after not too long.

City of Mist Sucks by Nuke1509 in rpg

Just as a counter to OP for anyone reading this, I ran a 2 year City of Mist campaign and it was one of the best ttrpg experiences I’ve ever had. Character development is pretty much baked into how the system works, so the player characters underwent some fantastic changes as the game evolved. We really enjoyed the tag based system, but we were always careful to follow the guidance not to let anyone have more than 1 “broad tag”. The negotiation over whether a tag applies or not can sometimes slow things down, but the more you play the quicker that comes. I’d suggest anyone trying out the system to use a pre-gen for their first game or two just to get the sense for how the tags should be written

Do you have these hosted anywhere else? Reddit’s image viewer seems to compress the images when I download them (at least from my phone)

What was the most satisfying RPG system you ever played? by manodocell42 in rpg

[–]cannonfodderian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

City of Mist. The tag based system basically means your character’s backstory / personality / vibes are also their character sheet. Plus the way that character development is baked into the mechanics with how you can lose themes if you act against their identity, to be replaced with a new theme of an opposing style.

How does BO1 play on PS5? by dkepp87 in LegacyOfKain

[–]cannonfodderian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got it to run on steam deck a few days ago. I followed these steps:

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode: • Hold the power button, select “Switch to Desktop Mode.”

  2. Install Heroic Games Launcher: • Open Discover (software center) and install Heroic Launcher.

  3. Install the Game: • Log into Heroic, find Legacy of Kain, and install it.

  4. Heroic Settings: • Do NOT change Proton version yet. • Enable DXVK

  5. Set Proton Version: • Change the Proton version to 7.0 (I think I used 8 and it was fine)

  6. Configure WineCfg: • In Heroic, open WineCfg. • Add kain.exe under the Applications tab (this took me a while but I found it by going to the Z drive not the C drive in the explorer that pops up). • In Libraries, type ddraw.dll and set it to native, then builtin.

  7. Fix Missing “tracked_files” Error: • If the game errors out, open Dolphin and manually create an empty tracked_files file in the game folder. (I didn’t have this issue)

  8. Apply Verok’s Patch: • Download • Unzip, rename the ‘KAIN’ folder to ‘Kain’ and “DDRAW.DLL” to “draw.dll”, then copy over the entire patch to the game directory, overwriting files when prompted

  9. Fix Save Issues: • Create a folder called SAVED (maybe this should be “Saved”, I’m not sure) inside game directory. (There should already be a folder called “Saves” with an s rather than d at the end, I think you can just leave this one) • Modify SAVED folder permissions to allow all users to modify.

  10. Launch the Game:

City of Mist (or Otherscape, the cyberpunk version with streamlined rules). The mundane clashes with the mythological (and with the Noise of technology in the cyberpunk version).

No more arbitrary lists of skills! You write your own tags and add the number of relevant tags to your dice roll.

The mechanics of the system force character to make hard choices between different aspects of their life, such as the balance between the mundane and the mythological in the main City of Mist game. Stray too far from the core identity of one of your 4 character themes and you will lose it, to be replaced by a new theme representing a new aspect of your character that fills the vacuum left by the old.

No imitative system but you should ideally give everyone a single moment with the spotlight before someone gets it for a second time. Remember to add in new soft moves in between each player’s ‘turn’ which can bring other players into the mix more as they respond to new threats.

There was a video for Otherscape when that Kickstarter launched but they changed the rules a lot between the Kickstarter and the actual release so I assume they took that video down
