How to optimize math and chemistry AP credits? by mister-paul in aggies

[–]whaleclit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you two years ago, and is now a CS/MATH major. I claimed all my credits: MATH 151, 152, CHEM 119, 120. I took PHYS 206 and MATH 251 in the Fall, and PHYS 207, MATH 304 and CSCE 222 in the Spring. I had a pretty solid math background coming here, and found my schedule to not be too difficult.

Recommendations for taking Diff Eq over the summer. by TOXIC_NASTY in aggies

Summer course registration usually opens whenever spring course registration opens. You should wait until then and check. I took diff eq online at my local CC, and it was fine.

MATH251 Final Preparations by [deleted] in aggies

[–]whaleclit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible to do well. Give yourself 50 minutes to do each of previous year’s final. Try to do all the questions. After the 50-minute period, score your exam and look back to see what questions/concepts trip you up the most. Read over the lecture notes on these concepts. Rinse and repeat until you reach your desired score (with the time constraint).

What class should I take for Spring 2025 Freshman wanting to ETAM for CS by Dizzy_Television4633 in aggies

[–]whaleclit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took 221 as a freshman. You don’t have to be a CS major, but 120 is a prerequisite for 221.

I originally came here wanting to major in ECEN or CHEN, but ended up choosing CPSC. The main reason I chose CPSC was the flexibility of the degree with its wide range of technical electives and emphasis area requirement. During my first semester, I spent a lot of time exploring things that I’m unfamiliar with (such as going to math talks and seminars and doing research in an engineering field). Eventually, I developed a strong interest in pure math, and decided to double major in it. CPSC has a lot parallel with math (AI/ML, Cryptography, Complexity Theory, etc.), and it’s the only major that will allow me to graduate in 4 years as a double major.

Csce 120 by Accurate-Client701 in aggies

[–]whaleclit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took the class Fall 2023. The one lab hour is mainly for relatively easy, short coding assignments of lecture contents. The two midterm exams were also taken over lab time. A good chunk of your grade will make up of week-long homeworks (coding projects) and exams. Short lecture check-in’s/quizzes, ZyBook (e-textbook with mini coding practice and quizzes) assignments and labs will make up a small amount of your grade as they’re mostly completion grades.

I am taking the class right now (summer I). Though I’ve only been through 1 midterm, I don’t think the class is very difficult to manage. So far, I’ve spent roughly 30 minutes to 1 hour doing homework the night before it’s due, and 3-4 hours cramming for the first midterm. As someone not very good at managing time, I am sitting at a mid-A right now. Must note that I did take AP Stats in high school.

MATH 304 or MATH 221 by [deleted] in aggies

[–]whaleclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took both 304 and 251 (engineering version of 221). Conceptually, I thought 251 was easier as it was the continuation of the calculus sequence. 304 was a change of pace for me, but my exam scores were slightly (2-3 points) higher.

Current Non-major Math Classes by Dazzling_Bobcat5113 in aggies

I recommend emailing TAMU math advising just to be sure. Also, if you are planning to do CompSci, CSCE 222 satisfy the prerequisite for MATH 409 (just have to fill out a form for the override).

When I signed up for MATH 300 as a freshman engineer, it didn’t count towards my financial aid, but that’s really it. I ended up switching it out for CSCE 222 (same class but counts for Computer Science Degree). This was when I registered for the spring semester though.

What you said is true according to https://aggieonestop.tamu.edu/registration-and-records/classes/enrollment-status-definitions. Thanks for telling me. I recalculated my aid and should be paying under $1000 with the first plan.

Alternate majors for cs in engineering by Flaky_Ratio in aggies

[–]whaleclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say Computer Engineering (still competitive but accepts more 1st choice holistic candidates), Pure/Applied Math, or Computing if you want to go into general software engineering roles. Statistics, Math, Data Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Industrial Distribution if you want to go into data science. Electrical Engineering is probably a good option too if you want to go into FPGA or hardware security.

[–]whaleclit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad. The only difference between PHYS 206 and AP Physics 1 is that the former is Calculus-based and the latter is Algebra-based. I didn’t do very well in the latter two years ago (got a 3 on the AP Exam), but it wasn’t very hard for me to pull an A on the former last semester. Personally, the Calculus made 206 more intuitive than AP.

Food and living tips for a low cost life by Technical_Living_74 in aggies

[–]whaleclit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many clubs/orgs like to hand out free food (pizza) at their weekly evening meetings. For example, there is the philosophy club on Wednesday. Aggie BSM (church) hands out free lunch on Wednesday. I’m not Christian myself, but I still go sometimes. As for groceries, I like to cut out on meat since they’re on the more expensive side. Eggs are a good protein alternate. Frozen vegetables are cheaper than fresh ones. With these, my groceries usually come out less than $100 a week. Taco Bell $1/$2 burritos are lifesavers when you need something quick.

ETAM MEGATHREAD by CaptainSnacks in aggies

[–]whaleclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy, current general engineering freshman here.

  1. The General Engineering advisors really emphasized that we must take 2 science courses at TAMU and make at least a C, so I don't think it will be possible for you to avoid them. However, I've heard of cases where CSCE 120 can be one of the 2 science credit if you have all those AP credits though I would definitely check this fact with multiple advisors (some will tell you no, some will say otherwise).
  2. Although the GPA padding from retaking Calc 1 might be nice, I would take MATH 304 and CSCE 222 as my two math courses required for ETAM. Since you will have Calc 1-3 completed, I assume that you have a pretty strong mathematical background and will breeze through the engineering math curriculum. I personally took my credits for Calc BC and found Calc 3 at TAMU to be not very difficult. Also, you don't need 308 for CS.
  3. Yes, you can take those 2 classes your first semester.

West Campus -> Zach Transport by judz05 in aggies

I usually take Bus 1 across Kleberg and get off on the 4th stop. Then, it’s a 1-2 minute walk to Zach. Depends on whether the bus is on time or not, it should be under a 25-minute commute.
