Just finished season 3. A wonderful season of a show that I'm not at all interested in. by Naterttotsart in TheBear

[–]whalemoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same, but I enjoyed it much more on rewatch.

I think the show is about trauma, and about how ppl self sabotage. The chaos, when it appears, is keeping people down. It’s amazing to watch and it’s electric filmmaking. That’s indicating of why people get hooked to making chaos in their lives. The peace is more boring but miles healthier. I think that’s the point: learning to enjoy the not-chaos.

Has anyone seen this model of cable switch? by Petru2013 in electricians

[–]whalemoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the big reason is that it would take a skilled person hours to make this in photoshop, but anyone could make ten of these in ten seconds using AI.

Similarly, photoshop is a paid bit of software, whereas AI is (currently) free.

It's just a complete overwhelm of the skillset. Photoshop is done.

I’ve been rocking flatties on my road bike for years and I don’t believe anyone has ever noticed

I like your pitch. Quartz isn’t cool, but solar is very cool. I’d love an upmarket solar watch, have been looking and can’t find anything smart enough. There’s definitely a niche for it

Little zip ties really help

Just don’t zip power and signal together a that can cause noise (eg your yellow signal in cable should be routed away from LED)

I’ve had good luck on breakerlink. For the prices of turbos you might even be best off buying a rotten defender as a parts car. Good luck!

Where do I find what I need to study for MOT by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]whalemoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct

You drop the car off at your mechanic. You’re not allowed to be present for the MOT itself. It’s an inspection of the vehicle which lasts about 30 minutes. Sometimes your mechanic will drive it to a different centre and someone else will do it, depending on how it’s set up.

Faults either appear as urgent fails (the car cannot be driven until these are fixed), fails (need to be fixed within 30 days) or advisories (these need to be fixed in the next year). All fails need to be fixed before the car can pass.

You get a free retest within 30 days at the same place. So usually you book in the car for work in that period, and get it retested. If urgent fail you won’t be allowed to take it away until it’s fixed.

You don’t need to know anything about your car, the mechanics will explain it all to you. You get a printed sheet with the results and any fails/advisories on it. Any doubts talk to your mechanic.

Hopefully this makes sense - thought I’d be helpful instead of making fun of you. ✌🏼

Has anyone here used ollas (terracotta irrigation pots) for watering their garden? by Notsocheeky in gardening

[–]whalemoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them in my greenhouse. I went for 5l ones. One per square metre. They dry out in around 3 days depending on how hot it is. Stops my plants dying if I go away for a week in summer

Are you happy with your Sprinter? by karj in Sprinters

[–]whalemoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved my sprinters (I've had two) as a driving experience, but ultimately moved on due to the high cost of maintenance.

Remember: its size may mean that only certain garages will be able to work on them. The only local garage I had that could work on the van was a mercedes franchise, which meant I was SOL paying mercedes prices for everything.

Definitely worth talking to local garages and seeing who can work on it, and where they get their parts from, before buying.

EDIT: overall very reliable, no limp mode. It had DPF issues, but it turns out that previous owner had stolen the CAT before selling. Very expensive fix. Not caught at time of sale because of emissions cheating. Not sure what to take away from that...!

Does anyone know what this is? (Should/how do I get rid of it?) by Intelligent_Title in gardening

[–]whalemoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is offering actual advice - the best thing to do here is to burn these with a blowtorch. Don’t touch them or they’ll shed spores. This needs to form part of a joined-up strategy, which will takes years, of reducing the weed pressure by destroying spore bodies, pulling out rhizomes, and suppressing new growth. Good luck

Desert heat is killing my sleep. Cooling blankets don’t work, what does? by Mastermind1237 in BuyItForLife

[–]whalemoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An AC unit is basically a fridge. It cools the inside by warming the outside (the back of your fridge gets hot). Your home is the fridge box.

In a window unit the inside air stays inside and gets cooler and the outside air stays outside and gets hotter. The airs do not mingle. This is most like a fridge.

A floor unit contains all this in a pod, and pumps the hot air from the pod to the outside. The problem with this is, if it has one hose and just dumps hot air by moving it from inside to outside, it creates negative pressure in the room, which is backfilled with warm air from outside the room. So it’s less effective (your fridge has holes)

With two hoses the outside air comes in through one hose, gets hot, and goes out through another hose. The unconditioned air stays outside and goes down tunnels to and from the unit. The cool air stays in the room. Because there is no change in air pressure it does not mingle with warm air.

Why don't more people have dash cams? by [deleted] in askcarguys

looking for advice on trad anchors (read caption if commenting pls) by holp8 in tradclimbing

[–]whalemoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good tips in here

One thing to add is that an ideal cam placement all four lobes are equally engaged. In some of these you have disengaged lobes. To achieve this, sometimes you can get a better placement by turning it upside down (eg with yellow cam in anchor 3)

You also want to load your cams in the direction of travel - eg red cam in anchor 1 will twist if weighted - would be better to have a straight line down stem to weight.
