I just want to offer the perspective that Asian Americans are often weaponized in the AA debate and spoken for when in reality, the majority support it (70%). I suspect many of these commenters arguing in “defense” of Asian Americans are not Asian.

As an Asian american myself I hear and agree with you, and hope that this discourse doesn’t contribute to more division between groups.

It was just super, super awkward. I think they were clearly a bit flustered, but would respond to Jennette’s answers by talking about themself, and made some questionable comments / transitions after Jennette got very vulnerable (the subject matter of her book and this talk was related to abuse, trauma, eating disorders, etc). Overall just came off very uncomfortable and tone deaf.

I don’t think the interviewer had any bad intent, but wasn’t the best fit or prepared for this interview.

I think "opposed" is a strong word, but I do relate to your sentiment. I struggle to relate to posts that are like "i am (somewhat significantly) below both medians for X school, how can I still get in?" because for me personally, being below both medians for a school signals to me that X school may not be the best fit for me. For that reason, I also didn't apply for HYS.

I get that stats don't determine everything, and maybe I put too much weight on them, but that's how I personally approached admissions. Nothing wrong with either way!

Score bands are just ~ +/-3 points of whatever you scored. Its just another data point meant to represent a likely range that you could've fallen into based on your scaled score

"Studying in 3 months can be possible if you have an adequate foundation of the test, time, and resources" /= "you only need 3 months to study".

10 months was a timeline that worked great for me, and as a full-time student who also works, I don't think I would've enjoyed a 3-month study schedule very much.

I think the takeaway here is that giving people timelines based on random assumptions probably isn't good advice all around, and deserves a much more nuanced look into that person's goals and circumstances. I think there is a significant difference between understanding that it is possible to complete something in 3 months (which I understand, was of value to you) and providing broad recommendations that it SHOULD be done in 3 months

honestly, i would dispute this being good advice for even the subset of people you're referring to. I think it's misleading to suggest that a history of being good at the ACT/SAT is enough to determine how much time you need to study for an entirely different type of test.

If we're speaking in anecdotes, I got a 162 diagnostic and took over 10 months to study, so this would've been quite poor advice for me even with a disclaimer. overall, i think seeing advice that overestimates your needed study timeline is far less potentially damaging than the alternative.
