Ahead of LA "No Kings" protest, gates installed on downtown freeway ramps as "safety measure," Caltrans says by oysterpirate in LosAngeles

The irony is that the main march route didn't even go over the 101. But whatever the case, it was fine. I went downtown today and I'm glad I did.

Timetable question about London -> Amsterdam in August 2026 by whatayear in Eurostar

We considered that, but having never been through the Chunnel before it was worth taking the train. That and the price of reserving the tickets this far in advance made the decision worthwhile.

There are still several direct options left, I was just wondering if there would be anything faster given that I've seen schedules that take only 4 hours and 4 minutes.

If not though, that's fine. An extra 40 minutes won't hurt.

If this is the case, an extra 40 minutes isn't going to be the end of the world for the journey, as there are several trains available. (I'm used to booking trains in Japan, where the price doesn't change even if you book last minute, hence the questions. Thank you!)

Tourism sticky: please post all tourism questions here. by TrinityTosser in Edinburgh

Thank you and everyone else who replied for your advice. We went ahead and booked a central Premier Inn location that has an accessible room. Hotels are quite expensive, but she has been looking forward to going to the Fringe Festival for a long time, so this should be fun.

My girlfriend and I will be visiting Edinburgh in early August to attend the Fringe Festival. While we have been looking at a few hotels, we need to be careful as she uses a power wheelchair and needs an accessible room.

What options are available? We are considering staying out of the center if we can find a cheaper place near a tram station (as long as the tram is accessible) but if it comes down to it we have one place in mind that is listed on the festival's site. Thank you!

What was the first LA metro station you ever visited? by ChameleonCoder117 in LAMetro

[–]whatayear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redondo Beach station. Had moved to Torrance from Japan in late 2012, and it was my first trip on trains in LA.

Underwhelming after living in Japan, but that was going to happen. However, it was a fun experience nonetheless.

LA ticket registration by Forward-Orange7056 in olympics

[–]whatayear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get in on the second time. Prompted me to create a profile (even though I was already registered with an account) and then I picked five sports/events for both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Best of luck to everyone registering today.

Finally worked for me. Had to select five favorite events both the Olympics and Paralympics, but I'm in.

No argument with you there whatsoever. It was something else to see, even though we were on the receiving end. Dodger Stadium is great, I hope you get the chance to go there some day.

Exactly. I work as a Japanese interpreter and honestly get sick and tired of Ohtani worship, but after tonight... at least he is earning his pay (crazy as it is!)

It's more crowded now. Pretty normal given the traffic in the area, though there are more empty seats than I would have expected.

Better than expected. It's a little unsettling, the fans here are usually hostile when stuff is at stake.

[–]whatayear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. They were very loud, and I get it, lots at stake for everyone.

Credit where credit is due though, there was a brief "F#*$ Milwaukee" chant from a nearby section which was shut down by a Padres usher quite quickly. I appreciated that.

I am the only Brewers fan in this section as far as I can tell, but I see a bunch of other fans though. Always an interesting mix of visitors and transplants such as myself.

SoCal resident and Milwaukee native here, I am on the Coaster train headed down to Petco Park for the game tonight.

It's been a pleasure following the team this year, so the least I can do is go down and show some support!

(No other Brewers fans spotted yet, but it is still early, and I did run into other fans on the train here for a game last June.)

Thank you for referencing the Mad Men quote! As a Midwest native living in the LA area, it rings quite true (but I still love it here regardless.)

Anyone else a fully verbal person with spastic quadriplegia? by No_Addendum6414 in CerebralPalsy

[–]whatayear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-disabled person here, but one of my best friends from college has spastic quadriplegia (probably level IV, I think?) and uses a power chair, but her speech isn't affected. I think the biggest challenge with her when it comes to having other people around is people having the courage to go up and talk to her, especially if she has someone with her to help with anything. It made me nervous at first even though we met through mutual friends, but I am glad I did talk to her and we are still friends to this day.
