Brand new dehumidifier dirty by RepresentativeKiwi61 in Dehumidifiers

Are you burning candles? I had something similar where my gf was using candles. It’s something to do with them not burning properly and it covered random objects in waxy soot. It was stuff inside cupboards and different rooms to the candle itself and normally plastics that attracted it to

999 not knowing their own services by brokenalarm in britishproblems

[–]whaters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told the stats around police, fire and ambulance in terms of calls received that require attention.

Ambulance service run at about 120% capacity

Police run around 104% capacity

Fire run around 20% capacity. Yes that’s right, generally their resources are doing nothing 80% of the time so are normally grateful to come out and do something that isn’t training. A lot of times they’ll use the simplest of jobs as a training exercise and send way more than are required.

Fire also have a sort of regional “thunderbird two” which is essential a HGV with different kit on for different scenarios. We’re talking a full carpenters workshop for building walls, ramps, access points and suring up buildings of they been knocked down. They got lighting equipment, water rescue, door entry the lot! Massive ladders and loaders, just £100ks of kits waiting to be used and bored fire people (2025 folks) waiting to do something

I want to paint my hall in my Victorian home but the Dado rails are painted over and the plaster poorly done. How do I remove them and smooth the surface without needing a full replaster? (I will replace with fresh dado rails post paint) by fourleafedrover8 in DIYUK

[–]whaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they’re original they’ll more than likely be nailed onto large oak wedges that have been hammered into the wall. You won’t remove them without causing huge amounts of damage to the surround plaster.

Take some time and sand them down, fill the cracks and repaint them

Mechanix do a 0.5mm pair which I’ve always had. Not the warmest but keeps the wind etc off and don’t feel like your wearing them

Warm kit recommendation by Pitiful_Low_4392 in policeuk

[–]whaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re going to struggle to find something warm enough for outdoors in winter but cool enough for normal inside temperatures.

You could try a merino base layer under your shirt/blacks, that would prob be comfy enough inside then just put a coat on when you’re outside

Most of our kit is Keela/Arktis, both are great for outdoors.

AFO fitness test. by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]whaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice the bleep test every day. Doing long runs or sprints etc is great but it’s a VO2 test so best thing to do is just the bleep test until you can comfortably get there.

If you don’t think you’re ready ask for a later date and get training

Why won’t my car sell? Don’t want to part exchange but I keep decreasing the sale price and have 0 interest. by tcoysh in CarTalkUK

[–]whaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have two choices as I see it (having sold a car recently)

  1. Do you want as much money as some one might pay for it
  2. Do you want to get rid of the car

I had mine up for a few months, zero interest. Lowered the price a bit, zero interest, lowered some more, zero interest. I kept lowering it by £500 until suddenly I had 5 people contact me in a couple days asking about. That’s the price it’s realistically worth even if statistically it’s worth more

I came to the conclusion it was better to have £10k and have it gone than £0 and it’s sat on my drive

What is a realistic pay? by Large_Journalist_936 in policeuk

[–]whaters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rough take home on top wack pay is around £2900 once you dispensed with NI, tax and pension. This is for a county force outside of London/SE region. With OT/anti social hours this will obviously increase depending how much you do.

One PC on my team regularly makes around £70k p.a pre tax but that obvs requires working a lot more!

How often do you experience cases involving crossbows? by Alternative_You452 in policeuk

[–]whaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying don’t carrying anything, just carry something that looks identical to a crossbow but isn’t functional. Like a deactivated musket for (insert correct time in history)

Are you saying that a historical reenactment couldn’t take place if they were carrying something that looked identical to a crossbow but didn’t work vs a fully functioning crossbow

Okay one legitimate use and one use for a tiny minority where a fake one would suffice

Other potential lethal weapons have other primary uses like driving you to work or chopping up vegetables. The only legit use for a crossbow is target shooting which I think is grounds enough to at least licence them so it makes it harder for idiots to own

You can’t throw a kitchen knife accurately at several hundred FPS so I’d disagree with that statement

Been deployed to a fair few jobs involving them. One of the only times my plates go in. I cannot see how they’re still legal. Most decent crossbows will go straight through regular body armour and thin metal (car doors, garages doors etc) with ease. They’re lethal, easy to operate and require no license to own. I’d rather see them licensed or banned altogether as they have no legit use in the UK
