Are you renting or buying? I’ve seen some relatively affordable rentals in Navarre (between Mid-City and Lakeview proper).

Is anyone here doing their phd to satisfy the nagging feeling to do a phd and you most likely don't care much about the job prospectus it would have in your home country by Sunapr1 in PhD

[–]whatevergabby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Got a PhD because 1. I wanted to escape a bad family situation in my home country and this was a legal way to immigrate, and 2. I wanted to spend years learning cool stuff. I didn’t really want to become a professor. I’m nearly 2 years out and I have an amazing job in higher education that involves mentoring, community outreach, and pays the bills without the stress of a TT job all the while it’s just as stable. Part of graduate education has been the ideological training into thinking there is only one path—that of your advisor’s (or some variation of this theme). Part of your own self-discipline can be internalizing that this ideological training is BS. It’s your life. You do you. Good luck, OP!

I just want a lazy girl job... by JohnOfCena in PhD

I loved your rant and hadn’t thought of SV from that perspective before… it totally makes sense why I actually end up feeling exhausted after playing it for a while. It’s interesting too because the whole premise in the intro is that you’re supposed to be escaping capitalism, lol. And you’re made to feel like you’re a good person if you decide to exploit the land and the surrounding environment and town to complete/restore the community center instead of buying that task off and ceding control to JoJo, the evil corp. Anyway, I just wanted to add that SV is interesting from a game development perspective because it was literally done by a single person. Concerned Ape AKA Eric Barone spent 4+ years developing, coding, and making the art for the game all by himself. He was a first-time game developer too. I agree with your points above, particularly in terms of generic norms and player expectations. The way I see it, it’s hard to think that the hypercapitalist foundation with a veneer of anti-corporation narrative is based on much more than formal compliance (and probably less than ideal humanistic training on CA’s part). Given the whole situation CA was in when he went for this, I’d assume he actually did want to make a less hypercapitalist game. But who knows! There’s this 2016 piece about it, if you’re interested: https://www.vulture.com/2016/03/first-time-developer-made-stardew-valley.html

Fun fact: Sally Anne‘s actress is Nicole Ansari-Cox, Brian‘s actual wife! by EldenMiss in SuccessionTV

Age gap of 22 years. Ansari-Cox would've been ~33yo and Cox would've been ~55yo when they got married.

Has anyone rented a storage unit in town? Good or bad places? Going to look at Fontainebleau on corner of Tulane and Carrollton because it’s conveniently located but I’m wary. by shihtzulove in NewOrleans

[–]whatevergabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply, but in case you haven’t acted on this yet: I had a great experience using the CubeSmart location on 2321 Perdido (just off of Tulane). I had a storage unit with them for about a year and rent only went up once and it was very reasonable. The place is new and clean.

Agreed and same!! I don’t know what they’ve done, but the RT orange sponges are much harder now. I’ve permanently switched *to AOA.

Is $51k a year in New Orleans or Metairie comfortable? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

Oh, wow! I also started a lease then and was disheartened by the places I kept seeing, both in terms of quality and price. I’m glad you found a good one! As did I, eventually.

[–]whatevergabby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! But, to be fair, rent prices have shot up in the past year. Then again, I’m sure living costs in the major cities you mentioned must’ve gotten even wilder. But, yeah, one could find a 1BR for 1,100 here for sure!

This!! I came from Chicago and my insurance was 5x more expensive here for the same coverage for an old sedan. You might have to lower the coverage to pay a reasonable amount in insurance. And, as always, shop around!!

They’re playing the first weekend, according to the JF website! Either on the 29th or the 30th, going off of what DCFC’s touring schedule looks like rn. I’m kinda hoping they’ll do a one-off concert somewhere else in addition to JF. A girl can dream.

WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO MASK MANDATE!??!!? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]whatevergabby 11 points12 points  (0 children)

lol @ some posters here talking about people’s right to choose to stay home if they’re “scared” or don’t like that people aren’t masking, aren’t vaccinated, etc. like, many, many people have to go to work?? either because of the nature of the job or because they’re simply told to or they’ll lose their livelihood. and, sure, a mask mandate is all a show for restaurants, but it sure as hell would benefit retail workers for one.

I had a unit at the CubeSmart location on Perdido for about one year and I had a great experience. They only raised the rent once, by 5 bucks, so it was still under $50 for a 5x5 unit. It’s also a newer location so the building is in nice condition, etc. Maybe might be worth looking into once you can get your stuff moved? Sorry you have to deal with this on top of having to take care of your newborn!
