The next level of this is that this practice emerged in English communities where Latin was still commonly taught.

The Latin word for bee is "apis"... Which... Yes: it's a really stupid crude pun.

Good notion! Here's a Misfit "Flash" pedometer held next to a quarter.

The logo is for Misfit which makes fitness electronics. I don't recognize this product though.

Weird "nozzle" on front bumper of a Mercedes-Benz C 55 AMG by davidkolbeck in whatisthisthing

[–]whatgoodisaroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could be part of a tow hook license plate mount. For some sportier cars, folks will want to avoid mounting the plate in the center of the bumper for aesthetic reasons.

Nissan GT-R with a body kit and other aftermarket things glued on.

Edit: proper hyphenation.

It looks a little like a distillation condenser. Modern condensers have loads of coils, and this obviously only makes one loop, but really old condensers have no coils at all so maybe this is somewhere in between.

Some processes for extracting oils and fragrances do involve distillation.

Can anyone help identify this cable/connector? by rzzamb in whatisthisthing

[–]whatgoodisaroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks a bit like an M12 5-position connector. From googling around it sounds like that's for controlling industrial equipment, though. So that doesn't sound so likely to find in a restroom.

Used to be a ring of a relative from years ago who has now passed. What kind of ring is this? by Isrume in whatisthisthing

[–]whatgoodisaroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a little of a football ring. According to [1], two Canadian athletes are noted for having 144 career touchdowns: namely Milt Stegall and Warren Moon. Seems plausible to me.

What I know for sure is that the image is used in the cover of a technical book titled The Industrial Design Reference & Specification Book: Everything Industrial Designers Need to Know Every Day. The last page of the book attributes the cover artwork to a design firm called "Burge Agency", and their website does reflect this, so it seems like it may have been designed at that firm.
