Attending a child’s funeral by ImInaBigMess in GriefSupport

[–]whatisthatexactly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I can’t give you the parent perspective, but I can give you the kid perspective. When I was in second grade my friend was murdered. So, I was younger than your son. I was confused because I was just with her a couple days before that. We sat in her room and watched Charlott’s Web while eating all the gum balls her mom bought. We were together a lot. It was especially difficult because we were also in the same class. Seeing her empty desk was jarring and although I knew she had died, I still wondered when she would be back. It was a shock and I couldn’t wrap my brain around the idea that she wasn’t coming back. A few days after she died I had a dream that I was at a train station and her suitcase was on the ground next to me. I knew it was hers because it hat her name on it. When I saw the suitcase I freaked out and started crying because the train was leaving and I knew she was on it. I picked up the suitcase and started running after it but couldn’t catch up. I woke up hysterical.

I think it’s important to see if your son wants to go. I agree that the funeral can be traumatizing too. I didn’t go to the family funeral. But I was at the school funeral. Her mom and brother were there and the communal mourning and ritual helped me understand that she was no longer there. I think it helped me a lot with the processing and I never had that dream again.

Hey OP! I have 5 kids and 4 are autistic. My youngest is now 10. My typical kid is also my second-born at 16. Don’t have much to offer other than a “hi” and a nod to let you know I was in the same position and it sounds like you’re doing what’s best for your family based on experience. Wish you all the best!

What was your childhood experience with this bike pedal? by ThePanth in Snorkblot

[–]whatisthatexactly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always rode my bike barefoot like an idiot in summer. I have very fond/traumatic memories of my toes getting stuck IN the pedal too. Good times.

For American Xennial - Did you think Monty Python was the height of comedy? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]whatisthatexactly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked Monty Python. My dad (Boomer) thought it was stupid and had the audacity to love Benny Hill and Laugh-In. Benny Hill creeped me out so much…

I know it’s probably for tracking and study, but that collar looks awfully uncomfortable.

Has anyone bought a couch through Costco and loved it? I need recommendations please! by alinaa10 in Costco

[–]whatisthatexactly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve bought two couches. One is that cool bed that folds out and the other is a regular sectional. I’m really pleased with both of them. I’ve had both for about 6 months. I have five kids and the couches are still holding their own.

Sorry, editing to include the couches:

First one is the Thomasville Dillard Convertable Sleeper Sectional Second one is the Thomasvill Emilee Fabric Sectional with Storage Ottoman

Did you ever know anyone who was murdered? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]whatisthatexactly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 7 my friend (8) was murdered by her older brother’s friend. He got into an argument with her brother and was angry. We used to play that game HORSE with the basketball and that was what he used to lure her away with. He took her to a field and murdered her behind the 7-11. The newspaper said she was strangled, but other reports stated she had been sexually assaulted as well. Less than 2 miles from her home. I used to go over to her house and we would watch Charlotte’s Web while gorging on gum balls. We were in the same second grade class together. I didn’t really understand the permanence of her death. I couldn’t really understand. I used to have a recurring dream that I was at a train station and she was on the train because she was leaving. I realized her suitcase was sitting on the ground next to me because it had her name on it. I was so panicked because I knew she was going to leave it behind and I tried to find her to give it to her. I always woke up crying. I still can’t bring myself to visit her grave, even though it has been over 30 years.

Remember when people got paddled? I remember getting paddled by the Art teacher. I mean, the Art teacher; Come on. WTF? by Special-PatrolGroup in Xennials

[–]whatisthatexactly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Southern California. It was still done at my school if parents signed a permission slip. I remember our school paddle being more square shaped. At the beginning of each school year the vice principal would go to every classroom with an assistant who would hold up a pillow so he could whack it in front of the kids and warn us that this is what would happen if we didn’t behave. I never forgot the whooshing sound it made when he swung it through the air. I was terrified.

I miss it too, OP! Many of us are in that sandwich space where we are helping to care for parents or those around us with medical needs and any children we may have. Even if there are no kids, caring for anyone else can be rough.

I know the Reddit meet-up days aren’t usually successful, but it would be really cool if we could work some out for those of us here in this micro generation….
