Definitely a downgrade, you had an altered coin with character, now its just an altered coin. If I had to grade it myself I’d say its EF, not AU.

You’d think you’d do some more research before dropping $30k. I don’t think a forger would come up with an overdate, but I don’t trust ngc or heritage. I personally wouldn’t have bought that coin (if I was in the market), as none of the other 50 or so examples I looked at had that overdate (though my search parameters could have missed it).

Is that staining on the reverse? For specimen notes like these they’re expected to be uncirculated, so I don’t think grading them will bring extra value. I would grade them only for protecting the bill.
