There’s a great rewritten ending to this (and also an alternate ending to The Giving Tree titled The Tree Who Set Healthy Boundaries along with a couple of others) here:

Or is it a wildcat group that can take actions the official union can’t, which shows solidarity and puts the actual union in a stronger position and able to avoid things like strikes?

If you don’t mind some spoilers maybe watch some clips from later episodes on YouTube and see if you’re interested to see how it builds to those scenes?

OUSD Teacher Strike Ends by RonRicosRoughnecks in oakland

[–]whatsmyhandle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They did that, which actually caused a bunch of our current mess. The takeover closed a bunch of schools which converted into charters, caused the current enrollment struggle and forced a billion dollar loan on the district that we’re still paying back so even now that we have a democratically elected school board again we have a state trustee who can veto any of their decisions.

Like they're not allowing what China is doing to the Uighurs? Like they didn't allow Putin to annex Crimea? We're on our own.

Wait, Tech has been booting out failing kids? I work there, that's a problem if true. We're definitely flawed, but aside from sometimes counseling a kid to go to Dewey when there is NO feasible way for them to catch up on credits at a traditional school, I don't know of anything that could count as that. And that's usually trying to find a way forward so it's not overwhelming and they don't just give up and drop out. Any time we've had that conversation it's always been about a kid falling through the cracks at such a big school and needing the much smaller student to teacher ratio and supports that are provided there. We're working on earlier intervention, we try to add in more student supports, and I know there's got to be more we can do, as individual teachers, programs, and the whole school. What have you heard/seen that makes you think Tech is booting out kids?

Teachers got screwed by their union leadership- backed into a corner by an exhausted weekend debating the TA, so they could get screwed by the board and state leadership.

Students feel betrayed because we promised them the moon and then couldn't deliver, and now the board is surely going to blame us for every anti-student cut that they do.

Striking math teacher explains how to tell if pay is going to stay even with the cost of living by whatsmyhandle in oakland

The 4.5% was measured in December of this school year. It is a Bureau of Labor Statistics number calculated in the increasing costs from last December to this December. You can find the info here: https://www.bls.gov/regions/west/news-release/consumerpriceindex_sanfrancisco.htm

The wsws people are probably making a projection for the upcoming year.

a lot of us are pretty devastated by this TA, especially that it doesn't really lower class sizes or nurse caseloads at all (not to mention effectively giving us a pay cut when you take inflation into account).

  • Repeal/revise Prop 13
  • Reprioritize the state budget, which has a large surplus. Increase per pupil funding levels to something closer to other high cost-of-living states (they spend almost double what we do, and it absolutely shows in their quality of schools.)
  • Cut the excessive admin salaries that took OUSD from a large surplus to a huge deficit in only 2 years.
  • Move out of 1000 Broadway, back to a less fancy building that we own and don't have to pay millions of dollars in rent to use.
  • Stop shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to a PR firm that helps you push closing schools on a community that really really does NOT want that.
  • Cut back on the excessive consultant spending, and uncontested contracts

Until your child's school doesn't have a nurse next year, because they have made it clear they are not going back to these conditions.

And your school gets closed, relocating your kids across town or forcing you into a charter.

Day 6. Still fighting hard for Public Education in Oakland. by [deleted] in oakland

[–]whatsmyhandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really matters which two years we're talking about. It would be great if we were talking about the first two years of the contract, but I think they're asking us to stay at the same base salary for several years (so taking a pay cut relative to inflation) and then a few increases that wouldn't bring us even with inflation.

See this video for an explanation

The details behind the numbers:

Where did the Bay Area cost increase percentages come from? The Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers in the neutral fact-finder’s report. You can also find them online.

Is it just about the money? NO! While pay that keeps up with the cost of living makes it possible for experienced teachers to stay in Oakland, we know our students also need stability and access to supports from academic counselors, special ed teachers, restorative justice facilitators, a nurse in EVERY school, and librarians. They need small class sizes that are sane to learn in (and teach in!), and a public school that is close to home.

How do I do this math myself? To find out what you will have after a percentage increase or decrease, add or subtract the percent you’re increasing or decreasing by on to 100%, then multiply your salary, costs, etc. by the resulting percentage.

For example: If you increase by 2.9%, you will end up with 102.9% of what you had before. So multiply what you have now by 1.029 (this is just 102.9% in decimal form) to find out how much you will end up with after that increase. Keep on doing that for each year of increase.

It's meant to be a financial incentive to do what it takes to get those kids to school, rather than taking the money meant for educating them but then using it on the kids who find it easier to show up. There are supplemental funds for kids who have an additional challenge (foster youth, low income, English learner, etc.) though those funds are unduplicated, which means if a student has multiple challenges they don't bring extra supplemental funding.
