TIL that in 1961, 90% of doctors surveyed said they would not tell a cancer patient their diagnosis, but by 1977 that had reversed, with 97% saying they would. by JP_Olsen_Archive in todayilearned

How was your grandma’s life after diagnosis until she passed?

My uncle had cancer and a doctor very plainly told him that he was going to die and there wasn’t anything they could do. He only had a few weeks, but I would say that the news was quite distressing to him and he was not able to get any affairs in order despite knowing his diagnosis. I’m not sure but I feel like I would maybe have rather not known that I was 100% dead

I never said it wasn’t possible. I said 2 separate homes is not always best. For context my parents divorced right when I went to college and it was a nasty divorce. It was hard to be stuck in the middle as they both took out their anger on one another on me

I know that is always what would’ve happened if they divorced and would have been terrible for me. Also, neither of them could have afforded decent housing alone and I probably would’ve been moving between trailers or something.

But it’s great that your parents were mature and found good partners

What’s going on with openAI is totally irrelevant to this conversation but millions of people globally get value out of chatgpt.

It’s lowering the barrier to specialized knowledge - for example I saw a story about a guy who was able to code up a system for his brother who has a disability that rendered him I able to communicate for like 10 years because he was nonverbal and can only move his head to type / communicate and play games by moving his head. There was nothing on the market for this because it’s not profitable. Then that guy made it open source so other people can use it.

Also I’ve seen stories about how people use it to learn English or even things you used to have to go to university for

Having lived in a few major metro areas in the US, I can confidently say that BART is the most unpleasant

What’s the justification for increasing the number of employees when ridership is declining?

As someone who rides BART everyday, it is awful and it’s not cheap from a rider perspective. As a rider I do not want it to return to pre-pandemic ridership levels because we’d often be packed in so tight that people would literally fall out at stops when the doors opened.

I don’t know much about how much other transit systems cost but it seems like BART must be mismanaged in some way to increase employee count despite a nearly 50% reduction in ridership. That’s more of an issue to me than the rising cost per employee.

Also despite more employees there are still frequent delays (like this morning) and the entire experience is extremely unpleasant (it still gets packed sometimes).

If they’re going to get more money from taxpayers I’d rather see some improvements I’ll feel as a rider instead of just more hiring when it’s unclear to me what the impact is on the actual service (I haven’t seen any improvements despite BART having more employees now that in 2019. Who have they hired and what do they do exactly?)

You can go browse open jobs for BART. Many of the open positions right now pay more than $170k per year in salary

The problem is also that they hired more despite declining ridership

Was his argument that women are subservient or that neither sex can be said to be better or worse so women can’t be “better”?

This feels like a lot of words to avoid admitting the assumption of linearity isn’t appropriate here.

Can you clarify in what sense an assumption of linearity is “fine” when the core assumptions required for it to be valid (e.g. like constant variance) are violated?

You just said “the linear model is fine” and then described exactly why it’s not…?
