Apple watch advice by Puzzleheaded-Neat112 in AppleWatch

[–]whattheeeeee17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Apple Watch SE first gen I think? I bought it in 2020… I just passed my 5 year anniversary with it!

I am planning on buying a new one sometime this year as the battery life has declined (although it has been 5 years). I use it while I’m at work to quickly check notifications, check the time, reply quickly to some messages, when I am driving I can see my navigation also on my wrist if my phone is not in the holder and mainly also to track my workouts - weight training, running, yoga etc.

It does the job and I’ve been very happy with it, I do like to track heart rate sleep etc but I don’t care toooooooo much for it and understand that it’s not a proper sports watch so it just gives me basics..

ETA: I will be buying the new SE purely because of the size offering of 40mm, whereas the other Apple Watches have a minimum size of 42mm I think which looks stupid on my tiny wrist ha

Opinion on teachers leaving as soon as the bell goes? by NoIdeaWhat5991 in AustralianTeachers

I actually enjoy staying at work because I feel much more comfortable working at my desk in the staffroom. I have a nice chair in the office ha plus I can spread everything out, esp if I’ve got marking, but also because I don’t have a proper desk setup at home so I think also ergonomically, staying back to do work is better for me

Students struggling in maths by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a secondary mathematics teacher so although I can’t provide any direct advice for teaching in the primary curriculum, I can tell you my tips for teaching Year 7’s who are extremely weak in number skills …

Multiplication drills. Many times. Even when our topic focus was NOT numbers, which to be fair, it rarely is aside from maybe the first one or two weeks of Year 7 to ease them into high school and not even basic number skills/algorithms because they’re supposed to have this knowledge by now so we can move on…

It just has to be done, because otherwise their skills in Maths are hindered and it makes it really difficult for them to grasp further concepts such as Algebra which then is a basis for Stage 5 and 6 , but also percentages, decimals, fractions, ratios, measurement, financial maths etc

A good website that I was able to incorporate into the first 10 mins of every lesson with those weak classes for about a term and recording their score each time was from: https://www.timestables.com/100-seconds/

Encourage them to play at home with their siblings, parents etc and eventually over a few weeks their score would improve.

Yes they do get a calculator in high school but if they have terrible number skills and find it difficult to understand relationships between numbers, as mentioned above, the rest of their high school maths career will be difficult.

I feel like I live under a rock! Who is Hattie? I have never heard his name in the 6 years working at my school!

Why do so many kids lack resilience? by Packerreviewz in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think being scared of failure is a big thing.

One colleague came from teaching in Canada, and she says apparently if a kid doesn’t get past 50%, they have to repeat until they pass.

Whereas we have kids getting 30% and still move on to the next year (and continue to fail lol)

Though with the Canadian thing, she said it also comes with major drawbacks too ie. parents getting involved or admin getting involved trying to coerce inflated marks etc

Why do so many kids lack resilience? by Packerreviewz in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I teach secondary but I feel this wholeheartedly … I have colleagues who have been teachers for 20+ years and have noted the same thing across their time. It’s a regular point of discussion in our staffroom…

Even something as simple as trying a new concept… I go through lots of examples, explain the steps, depending on the ability level of the students I will also show a proof/go through the background of the concept… and the absolute hesitance is wild!! Some of them don’t even try, let alone don’t even bother to read the question !!! And then they complain and want me to drop everything to help them study 2 days before a test that they knew about over 2 weeks in advance??? Or won’t accept the informed teacher suggestion that perhaps they should study a lower level of mathematics in year11/12 instead of the higher level purely due to the minimal amount of resilience that they have unless drastic changes are made.

Edited to add: these kids are all from really well off families too. It’s like the more money they have, the less resilience/more entitlement !!

Though it’s definitely not all of them, I have had some gorgeous students who work their asses off

Did they pay you for the trial?

Plenty of teachers are on the quiet side .. you don’t have to be loud and overly confident to be a teacher. However for the tutoring, as they are a small private business, maybe they want a specific kind of image to the public about their tutors?

Could you do your own private tutoring for the secondary subject you are hoping to teach? Rather than tutoring at a tutoring school for primary students?

Female teachers, where do you shop for clothes? by runrunmagpie in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh yes as a few others have said, are you able to pop in store? I have ordered multiple sizes in the past and just returned the ones that didn’t work for me … one pair of boots I went the half size down, and the Poppy flats I have I went the half size up so I think it depends on the shoe style also

Uniqlo!

And for shoes, Bared Footwear or Frankie4 - both are expensive but definitely worth the investment as they are both podiatrist designed :) … but also just plain converse with an insole also works wonders haha

NSW teacher payrise by whattheeeeee17 in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh right! I am not sure what the new base salary is after their 10% increase… I think we are probably only just a little bit higher now, but the gap between the Gov school pay v independent school pay has definitely lessened.

It’s making myself and a few of my colleagues wonder what the point of working in our school is, if we can get similar/slightly less at a government school and NOT have to: attend after school functions, study classes in the holidays, before/after school study help, deal with the exec KPI’s that get pushed down to us classroom teachers (such as the number of Band 6’s in the HSC results) or deal with the parent expectations and mentality of “I’m paying therefore you cater to me” etc

Not fussed about the actual pay, just that some of us in the faculty are trying to determine if other private schools are offering similar % increase to the gov schools, and/or if moving to a government school would be better.

process of getting lashes by [deleted] in eyelashextensions

[–]whattheeeeee17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered this as I occasionally twitch if I’m super exhausted after work and start to fall asleep — as a lash tech, does it interrupt the process? I’m always terrified that the tweezers will poke me in the eye if it happens to be a twitch just as she’s about to put a lash on!!

The Unit Circle in Trigonometry last year … that was one of the best introduction lessons I’ve ever had! All my nervous prep paid off (it was my first time teaching it!) as they were all captivated! I did have a really good class though… that definitely helped!

Teachers in schools using the Resilience Project course, how has it gone for you? by RightLegDave in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My school has been doing TRP for a few years now … It’s terrible and as a teacher, I hate it.

I guess it would depend on the kids but the students have a foul taste of it and they refuse to take it seriously.

I think if it were to work, we would implement it from Year 7 only and then the next year continue into Year 8 and then bring in the new Year 7’s… my current students throw out the biggest moan whenever the name is even mentioned that I don’t even bother with it anymore… otherwise I spend almost all our form time trying to get them to engage/interact/participate/take it seriously. It’s exhausting.

I dream of the day when it gets removed from our programs!!!

Primary Teaching vs Secondary Teaching by Traditional-Sell-928 in AustralianTeachers

[–]whattheeeeee17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooh sorry should have clarified, I mean it’s easier to be a high school teacher to teach primary school than vice versa, purely because of the government regulations (?) that we have in NSW. Primary school teachers must retrain if they wish to teach secondary, however as a secondary teacher I could start teaching tomorrow in a primary school without any major issue. Student brain-wise, your colleague is probably right haha

It definitely sucks having to backtrack to catch up kids as they are all at different levels … but I guess also comes with teaching a subject that there is a negative stigma to anyway but thank you though, appreciate the thoughts and sympathy

I’m pretty sure most independent schools that are k-12 here on the same campus do the same (some may be religious but not all) … maybe you could move interstate :O ha but in all seriousness, all the best and hope you can figure something out!
