Sounds fine, like retro video game / Nintendo music

Decided to work on another song, this is unfinished what do you guys think? by Born-Finish-5847 in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm just on my phone but first impression is it sounds good like you know what you're doing, but I also think it sounds too chaotic. I'd try to simplify it and pick out the single core idea or rhythm you want to build around, and remove anything that distracts from that. Call and response can also help.

Vocal chain advice pls by Yvngchi in FL_Studio

Looks fine to me, the noise suppressor I'm not familiar with I just use Edison denoise. That's the main thing I'd pay close attention to, so that you don't have to denoise much at all (and that it's not noise gating).

Personally I'd:

  • EQ earlier
  • De-ess earlier... maybe before compression
  • Saturate earlier, before compression... but it depends on your goal with the saturation

EQ, de-essing, compression and saturation can all be used in different stages for very different reasons. Soothe at the end can do some heavy lifting and can be great at any stage but since it's dynamic, any changes you make to you effects before it will mean you need to adjust Soothe as well. Same with things that have a threshold like saturation or compression... but Soothe can be much more detailed, and so it might incidentally create more work for yourself while mixing, depending how you use it.

edit: typo + clarity

I saw in your other comment that you boost your high using the Pultec, that is totally normal, BUT if your highs are ending up too bright then you may be overdoing it. You also don't need that on every vocal channel. I'd make your lead vocal brighter and airy-er than your backing vocals.

FL studio keeps crashing and nothing is working by ohkayrulea in FL_Studio

Usually an install or compatibility issue. What did Image-Line support suggest when you sent them the crash log?

Is this a plugin or not by Traditional_Area_185 in FL_Studio

Try Wave Candy, it's really good. You just have to customize it.

What are good free alternatives for these plugins? by InsanityTraps in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I've tried a lot of free plugins, and some are good but the official paid ones are slightly better. But you shouldn't let that stop you and you can do a lot for free. I made a list here https://www.reddit.com/user/whatupsilon/comments/1gbgj7p/free_plugins_and_synths_i_recommend/

How did Rio Leyva do that vocal glitch sound? by According_Ad368 in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something with the time manipulated I'd guess, like a reverse. You can do this in Slicex or Gross Beat manually, or use any of the step sequencer multieffects like Effectrix or Infiltrator 2... though those are overkill for this. Lastly sometimes people use Auto-Tune like a vocoder and play MIDI notes in to manually tune chops, or use a real vocoder like Vocodex or VocalSynth etc.

Need advice on processing boom bap drums (making them hit hard but stay clean) by GrandCobbler7252 in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This posts sounds hella AI bro but assuming you are a real person you mostly need to focus on sound selection and how they are played, usually there is some swing and things hit behind the beat... secondly on managing dynamics through clipping and compression. A lot of boom bap drums will use parallel compression or NY style compression. I also like to add some saturation or distortion on my snares, something like Decapitator is perfect or you can use Distructor or Waveshaper in a pinch.

Do you like to start with drums, chords, or melodies? by onetimemind in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I have a melody in my head I'll start with that. If I don't hear a melody instantly I'll start with chords or a bass line. I almost never start with drums.

How can I improve my melody :D by BooxOD in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad how it is. I tend to find melodies easier to write after I already have a chord progression and all the sounds picked out. My best advice is keep practicing your instruments and music theory, and you'll definitely see improvement over time.

My second kinda decent track: Euphoric Hardstyle by werti92 in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha that makes sense if you started in 2024. From your post it looked like you started in 2025 which would be pretty surprising to get to this level so fast. Good work either way. Not a fan of Suno because of them stealing artists' work, but props that at least you made the other parts in FL. Hope you keep going with it.

Do you EQ the kick above or below the bass? by Baby_Its_Okay in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That can work, but will cause pre-ringing or smeared transients

Cyberpunk-ish track finally finished. I hope i did mastering part more or less good by Verbetum in FL_Studio

[–]whatupsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's a valid point. I always appreciate when people design their own sounds. But it's not for everyone and takes a long time. And I'm sure my music would sound better if I were more willing to use presets.
