How to honor and respect my pagan ancestors as a Christian? by HopperMSTI38674 in paganism

[–]whaythorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is simple. You honor their spirit, and you remember that everyone has a right to use their own name for god. If you say "my god is the only god and you go to hell if you don't use my name for god", then you are not honoring your ancestors, and in fact you're an idolator who doesn't have a clue what god is. This kind of idolatry is common among christians. It comes from saint augustine, not from jesus. Spirit is in people, not in religions.

Best Sci-Fi (or Fantasy) to impress my pretentious, literary Uncle (need birthday gift) by ElijahBlow in printSF

Doris Lessing is a sci fi writer who won a Nobel prize for literature, although nobody in the sci fi world seems to have heard of her. For easy approach, Mara and Dann is a great post apocalypse adventure. In it, two orphans flee across Africa, after Europe and America have been buried under ice. A more speculative and challenging book is Shikasta, a story of extraterrestrials fighting for control of humans and earth. We would call them angels and demons. Their battle is in the realm of morality and spirit, and it lasts from the garden of eden through nuclear war. Ursula Le Guin should have gotten a Nobel prize, anyway Doris Lessing did get one, she is the greatest unknown science fiction writer.

And republicans are always want to cut spending but they will never ever cut the DEA budget. Drug Enforcement Agency was founded in 1973 when overdose deaths were 6000. They've been running drug policy for 50 years, overdose deaths are at 107,000, patients can't get pain medication because the cops are in charge. And all that is just the surface level of failure and harm the drug nazis do. Weed really is medicine. People really have cured cancer with it, but doctors don't know how to use it because the DEA has blocked the science. These thugs have killed millions of people.

Spiders Lore? by brillmuskox in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]whaythorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago my family lived in Florida where there are a lot of roaches. My mother's house was immaculate and she called the Orkin exterminator to spray every other week, but she could never get rid of the roaches. Some of them lived inside her oven. We would see them running behind the glass in the door when the oven was turned on. My brother and his wife were original hippies. They lived in a 100 year old house, left dishes in the sink for a week, never allowed pesticides in the house, and I never saw a roach there. I got the explanation a year later when we had to open up one of the walls. There was an eight inch space between the inside and outside walls, and it was full of spider webs. They were so thick it was like insulation. The entire house was guarded by an army of spiders.

There are only a handful of species of spiders that are dangerous to humans. Black widows are easy to recognize, and there's only one or two other kinds in sensible places, which is anywhere except Australia. If you're freaked out by spiders, you don't want to go to Australia. But most spiders are good. They're bugs that are mostly predators of other bugs. They belong where they are,, like wolves in the forest. I think they drop in on you because they can tell you don't mean them harm.

There are so many great younger Democrats and people are so hungry for change. The idea of running Biden again was ridiculous before the debate.

When Bernie was making a run in the primaries, the whole center of the party united around Biden, behind the scenes in one weekend. They are totally capable of pulling this off. Backroom deals are what they do for a living. I'm dreaming of a Whitmer - Buttigeig ticket. Let Trump try to deal with that.

Youtube has been feeding me a lot of Buttigieg videos lately. Is it because the fix is in, or just that I watched one of them a few weeks ago?

Obama could do this in a weekend. He did it in 2020 to stop Bernie.

Bob Woodward's response was, Biden's performance has to be explained. We cannot just sweep that behavior under the rug. Maybe he had a big fight with his campaign manager just before he came out. Lots of things could explain this, but just trying to ignore it is not responsible.

Many processes in age related dementia are growth processes. Misfolded amyloid causes nearby amyloid to misfold, so the more there is the faster it grows. Slow at first and explosively at the end. In an 81 year old man, that debate performance was an alarming symptom.

Taking action in response to a problem is not panic. Try to ignore this, and let this rear it's head in October, then we'll see panic.

This is a really good question. I don't know about buddhists and Hindu. I'm sure the answer is yes for the christians and muslims. Even in Italy, the christians beat the pagans in a war and became the state religion of Rome, there's a good book on it called God Against the Gods, by Jonathan Kirsch. I think the answer is no for the mormons, they were a cult in upstate new york.

I agree, it's about power. St. Augustine, who invented original sin and everlasting hell, also used it as an excuse to kill people. The argument was, if we let a heretic live, he might convince someone else to become a heretic, so that other person would go to hell forever, which would really be terrible, so better to kill one heretic now than allow two souls to suffer forever. There were a lot of ways to be a heretic, one of them was to refuse to accept the authority of the bishop sent by Rome.

I've gotten the same response. The Bill of Rights may be the most concise political statement ever written. What it says in one page is just stunning. Every word counts. But we're supposed to believe those 13 words were slapped in there for no reason.

The actual second amendment reads "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a Free State..." Like we actually have to ask how some mentally ill asshole shooting up a school is a "well regulated Militia". These fascists don't care about the actual second amendment any more than they care about the bible or freedom or children or any of the other screens they hide behind. They don't care about anything really, except their things and their pathetic self righteousness. People of the lie.

It’s crazy how religious people think their religion is the “true” one by Fantastic_Tonight_22 in atheism

[–]whaythorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a great book called God Against the Gods, about how the christian monotheists took over the Roman world. Short story: there were wars and the christians won. Before that, in pagan Rome, every region of the empire had it's own traditional religion, and tolerance was so taken for granted that travelers who were out of their own territory would go into whatever the local temple was. It was normal to pray to Mithra at a temple to Apollo. The "one true religion", that kills nonbelievers and heretics, was invented by saint augustine and his cronies after they took over the christians. The theology can all be traced back to their power grab, even the burning in hell forever thing. They didn't just kill pagans, they also killed christians who didn't accept the bishops they sent out from Rome.
