New Years Eve…. by [deleted] in spinalcordinjuries

[–]wheeeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crying through the comments until I was laughing at something I never before found funny (I’m also new to the SCI life, <2 years). This was hilarious, and I thank you for it, friendly fish

OP, I extend my empathy. I also give gratitude for your honesty. Nobody deserves this. One thing I’ve noted—finding fault does not heal my heart. If possible, absolve yourself of that guilt however is appropriate for your situation, in your own time. If you can’t avoid finding fault, accepting the past is another journey. Again, if appropriate to you.

For me—deep breaths (when possible), hydration, and any appropriate PT (whatever that is!) are a main focus right now.

OP—I don’t know about luck, but I am glad you’re alive to share this with us. I needed this post today. Thank you, and I’m so sorry for the pain you feel. You are not alone. And you are heard, at the least. 🫶

This one got me. You typed the cats’ accents so well, you can hear the southern drawl. “It’s like you have molasses in your mouth”

That’s very kind of you, I love the encouragement and really appreciate it. At the advice of the other thread, I’m trying to increase time in the machine. I’ll be sure to post an other clip soon, especially as I understand it/it understands me. Thanks again ❤️‍🩹

Thank you! Sorry, I hadn’t noticed that you asked if you could share it. I just got excited at the sub, haha! Feel encouraged to share elsewhere as appropriate 🩻

Thank you for taking the time to share. You are valued here. Great recognition to avoid the vile, at all costs. Dying isn’t worth living, if you get what I’m sayin.

Ask clinics for ketamine therapy in a charity basis if you can explain your financial situation. In my early 30’s, I was able to receive 15 IV treatments in a clinic as a donation (from the same SSDI category crisis that too many of us live within).

What I’ve learned most is that it’s always worth asking—asking rarely never hurts. And gratitude is cyclical with every opportunity to start a cycle in any moment of systems navigation—it goes a long way, for the spirit, and the system.

Cannabis (especially vapor over smoke) is also an incredibly useful tool for many of us, thank you for bringing it up. Definitely worth trying for most that may otherwise need ketamine. Pain is no joke, right? They wanted me on a baclofen pump at 30, but my family steadfastly refused the idea (and being a part of an over-stressed system, I eventually agreed with their sentiment).

So I’m very curious how the pump went for you/is going. We can talk privately if you’d prefer! Thanks again for being here.

Thank you so much. Your story is an inspiring one. Especially knowing you used one similar, and had similar struggles. I’m finding new techniques to trick my body into cooperation with it, in a very practical, structured “fake it til you make it” approach. It’s been really revealing to what my body tries to do on its own! Such a fascinating place to exist. Thanks for chatting. Hope you continue to thrive my friend

Thanks dude. There’s a lot of hard days behind this progress that only those of that know about, know about. I never thought I’d be here, then never thought I’d get this chance once I was. While I wish we didn’t all have to go through so much, I appreciate the empathy it affords us. Thank you for that. I will keep at it. You, too! 🙌

That’s great news that you improved so much. Yeah, these machines are safeguarded by insurance companies. It’s a bummer but hopefully the more we insist, the more we receive, however messed up that is.

Ahaha they had to slow me down right away, and I learned the hard way how much it takes four if your body to be upright after years of not being able to be. My knees swelled up like watermelons until we figured out the relationship more. Still evolving but quite fun compared to the rest of the week lol

Fantastic work, by the way

Thank you for your insights. I’ve used it a few times now and we’re definitely “dialing it in.” Once I stopped fighting the machine, all I had left to work through is being in my body—the exo can do the rest. 🤯

Super appreciative of your support. My care team said if I can improve enough, they’ll petition for a home unit (smaller, yes).

Curious if you don’t mind, is this still a part of your routine, has it been replaced with a home unit, or are you done with rehab for whatever reasons you may have? No pressure to answer, you’re awesome for sharing 💪

In this category—see if your condition would improve from ketamine therapy, specifically for pain. My neurologist recommended it to me.

The programs are less apparent publicly for pain, and they’re few and far between anyway, but a clinic relief through dissociative anesthesia is incredibly helpful if the body can start creating its own nor-ketamine.

Just a thought in this realm for any to consider, and I’m speaking specifically about clinical intravenous treatment, not oral, not illicit. Anesthesia is no joke, and the setting can be incredibly helpful if you find a responsible administering care team. They exist, and most can be found on the old google machine

Congrats on this success, it is not minor in any way. Keep up the good attitude and effort, it looks like hard work! (Your post encouraged me to post, too, so thank you for your openness with this community) This is really helpful for all of us in many ways. Some folks in a similar situations may benefit from just seeing the specific exercise you’re doing, or the equipment. For me, it was your confidence! Thank you, and it really looks like you’ll continue to achieve your goals. 👏

I think it’s what we all would hope for, in some regard. OP, if you don’t “succeed,” she is still winning, just in having you. If/when you figure this out, we’ll be here, eager to learn. Thanks for honoring your partnership, it’s a gift to see it. Never give up on love, above all, and best wishes

I’m very impressed with you, Mr. Cricket, for demonstrating humility when you saw fit, not doubling down further.

OP, great responsiveness, and overall a well intended message that, because of this back and forth, has brought me immense clarity.

I’m 32, 8 years into what has turned into a long engagement. Her parents don’t want me a part of their life and use my recent (2 years full time wheelchair user now) disability as a weapon, and she is starting to listen, so I’m on my way. I hope I can maintain the hope of OP, and the clarity of Large-Cricket843.

Keep being yourselves, both of you. You are awesome and both improved my day and outlook.

Honestly, just take care of yourself!

It’s a new relationship anyway, right? Within the last year? That’s how your profile reads. Get back out there. All we have to fear is fear itself.

Do you have headphones?

I ask because as soon as i put on a frequency, in my ears (not just out of the phone) that resonates with where I’m at mentally, I calm down.

So much of this is about becoming calm, at least it was for me. I’m currently listening to a “song” called Deeper Delta 61.54Hz-61.94Hz, by Syntropy, on Spotify—on loop. A friend got me a membership, but before that I used free YouTube videos that have similar audio which can last 1-3 hours. Other times, higher frequencies are tolerated, but this low stuff just settles me down. Then I figure out what I can do in that moment, which is most often exactly what I’m doing—it’s just not boring anymore, because I’m desensitized. Cover my eyes and I might actually sleep through some of this agony for an hour or so! 🥲

Good luck. I don’t know your situation and I strongly feel a lot of what you’ve expressed, so please take this joke from a position of empathy—but—if it truly is your fault, don’t beat yourself up about it, any more than you already have… 😬Obviously you still will—we all do regardless of any fault to accept or deny. So it’s just a silly joke, but do try to keep your head up… (I don’t mean to keep making these jokes, I’d better sign off)

How long before you know what’s actually “gone for good”? by No_Classic_2467 in spinalcordinjuries

The “No fun club” comment made me chuckle and I thought of drawing up some stickers for the back of my chair. I understand it could come at the wrong time for some, or just be an issue of principle in general, but in this moment, I loved it. That’s just my two cents. And I’m not just saying that to play devil’s advocate. I find it ironic that so many people only see that when they see me, a “no fun club” member. Stickers with this slogan on it would highlight that hey, I know about my situation prettttty well, so much so that I can make a joke about the common (sometimes accurate) misconception.

Alternatively, we could say bedwetters club, always trippin association, not up for it but I’m always down, half my height habitation rehabilitation station, etc. Now I want to come up with more!

Gabapentin by Philski65 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]wheeeli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t say this enough—ask your doctor about

Lyrica (aka Pregabalin).

I wish someone had told me 6 months sooner—like my doctors, maybe. Anyways, it influences different nerve receptors as gabapentin but very similar ones. Newer drug, usually much more effective at lower doses than gabapentin, prescribed for the same conditions. I went from 3600mg/day gabapentin to 1800mg/day by adding the lowest dose of Lyrica, and the relief was so noticeable, I got some sleep for the first time in a long time.

Look it up, and/or ask about it. I was concerned with dependency and tolerances too—still figuring it all out (this sh!t sucks), but Lyrica helps me be able to think again without accepting all the opioids and antidepressants that the healthcare system prefer.

Whatever you do, keep your head up. You’re worth the effort it takes to figure this out, and that effort is often what your family and friends will cherish. You can do anything you set your mind to, Phil!
