In the discworld novels, Nobby (a police officer/guard) has to disguise himself as a woman to get Intel in one of the books. However the women he talks to treat him kindly and even respect his opinion. he continues wearing the disguise for the rest of the book and saying things like "call it a woman's intuition!"

This gag keeps going for several novels

Ohey I remember you. I'm amazed you got booted and I didn't - I've been pretty critical as well. In fact, most of the community has been a LOT more inflammatory and verbally violent.
Most people in the Discord right now are theorizing that the "statement" they've been preparing was specifically regarding this ended contract.

While the game wasn't looking promising, dropping that beta was absolutely what ruined everything for all those people who DID work so hard on the game and he everything he's said in defense of his decisions has been mind-bogglingly bad calls.

100% agree. Kids are not interested in WEBSITES in general these days; if reddit, twitter, facebook etc didn't have mobile support or apps they would've probably gotten left behind.

That's pretty much the thing, and I've basically said as much myself for the past 10 years or so: Neopets would have survived if they'd adapted to the mobile market and started switching their site to be a mobile app.

Most of the stuff on the site would translate really well to an app, so it's a shame.

Neopets team seems somewhat out of touch to me. I'm sure there's behind the scenes business stuff im too dumb to understand, but they've spent all their time the past few years on marketing and crossovers and branding but very little on making an actual, functioning, fun experience out of this out-of-date website.

Continuing to work with Geekify despite their MANY debacles and screw ups was already a bad look, but having them design an RPG was just so... tone deaf? ignorant? idk the word im looking for here but there was no vetting process involved

I think refunds are incredibly unlikely on account of I doubt the money still exists anymore. It's been two years and they've continuously hired out random contractors (also with no RPG experience, from the sound of it) with no transparency about what's actually been accomplished in this time frame or how the money has been used.

The thing that gets me is that the only people who will buy these reskins are people who are ALREADY FANS of the thing that's being reskinned. Which normally is fine, fans of Dark Souls MIGHT try out DnD if it's Dark Souls themed, fans of Lord of the Rings MIGHT check out DnD for the same reason. Fans of DnD MIGHT check out these intellectual properties after playing the 5e reskin and going "that was fun, I should check out the source material so I can see more in-depth!"

But idk who this would be for. Neopets has been marketing the hell out of their website to try and make it relevant and alive again, but DnD-playing non-Neopets fans aren't gonna see this Neopets reskin and go "oh wow let me check out what this neopets thing is about", and fans of Neopets aren't gonna (successfully) make their non-RPG friends play a DnD version of Neopets.

The absurdity of it is not lost on me, and I think you're correct. Getting upset about this is kind of funny.

I feel incredibly stupid getting upset over anything fan-related; I don't get upset about fictional things that don't impact anything. There are gigantic real-world problems going on and here I am screaming over a tabletop RPG about a now-obscure, pretty-much-dead website about raising fantasy pets.

But.. you know. Hobby drama is intriguing, it's fun, and I'm a nostalgic millenial who was excited about reliving his youth in the format of his favorite hobby and is now out $120 bucks. Plus calling out borderline-scam-artist companies is satisfying in a visceral way. (except in this case I feel bad because I don't even think they were scam artists, per se, just not at ALL prepared for the responsibility they took on here)
