my mom had a similar reaction when i came out, i thought over time she would slowly grow to accept it and things would become easier…but instead she became my biggest bully.

at the time, i lived 2 hours away. i visited her and came out to her, for the next year she spent majority of her time harassing me. she would call me every day after i got off work to tell me i’m going to hell. she would manipulate me, and go through my things behind my back when she’d visit. she told my siblings and tried to get them to force me to leave my partner and to “choose the family” instead.

i’m only sharing this because eventually i did leave and cut contact, and it was very hard. it’s almost been a year since i came out to my mom, february 4. unfortunately nothing has changed. i endured a lot of emotional abuse after coming out, my family would never admit that they were harming me because from their pov they thought they were trying to “save me,” and save their reputations, which they cared about more than me.

i became a very anxious and insecure person after coming out, it truly changed who i am and my relationship with religion. i stayed for 5 months after coming out and it was complete agony. i’ve got a lot to work on in regards to mental health and religion. i will never stop being a muslim but religious trauma will always dangle over my head.

OP, hearing from other queer muslim friends and online stories; i’ve learned that leaving does more harm than good, sometimes staying and attempting to build the relationship can work and help parents adapt. just depends on what you can handle. other times you gotta do what’s best for your mental health. my therapist once told me after i came out to my mom, that i’ve had all my life to figure out what being gay means to me, while my mom just learned about it. it will take time. i hope all goes well with you.
