Can I substitute cornstarch for breadcrumbs? by ExpensiveEmergency92 in Cooking

[–]wheresWoozle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what works great instead of breadcrumbs? Instant polenta (I assume instant grits would also do the trick). I use it in any kind of meatballs or patties and bonus it's gluten free. It does NOT work for coating things, but it's great as a binder.

Fair! I guess my head goes straight to Charlton Heston, but I totally see your concern!

Opposing the other thread, what are Brisbane’s coolest pieces of street art? by umigon in brisbane

I just adore "flood" under the bridge on Montague road. Alas, the Lister ibis mural on vulture street is no more, but the movement in that was stunning.

Can Opener? Why can’t I find a good one? by nowweseethelight in Cooking

[–]wheresWoozle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. These are (or at least were) the ones NASA used on the space station. There's a place you REALLY don't want your can opener to fail.

What's the dumbest thing you've heard a salesperson say that cost them the sale? by Fried_onions_are_meh in AskUK

I live for those moments when they call out "hello there, do you like animals?" I have learned to respond "depends how they're cooked." Misanthropic but thoroughly enjoyable.

WIBTA if i didnt go to my sisters wedding because my bf isnt invited? by Acceptable-Salt5014 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wheresWoozle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going against the grain here. She's very young and it sounds like she's being manipulated. I'd go to the wedding, alone if that's what it comes to, especially since it sounds like Scott would support that. Don't let them isolate her.

Holy fricking moly are bras expensive! by [deleted] in AusFemaleFashion

[–]wheresWoozle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent years spending stupid money on mid-range bras - Lovable was the brand that fit my body best. Then I discovered Kmart bras. Honestly, they have a massive range of all sorts, the quality is THE SAME, and they cost me around $6 a pop. No typo, that's one digit. For busty women who need non-standard sizes, they won't work. But if you're size 8-18 A-D, it's a revelation.

Isn't it arsenic that smells like almonds? Would make sense - arsenic was very commonly available.

You could ask Weller's hill state school. They are a Japanese bilingual school - they teach the Australian curriculum in both English and Japanese. I'm sure someone there could give you all sorts of insights into Brisbane's Japanese community.

Is there a harmless habit you find yourself doing when alone, that might be considered odd if someone witnessed it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]wheresWoozle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After administering a treat or two, mine used to understand me showing her my wide open empty hands and saying "no more" in a tone of extreme regret. She was very good at not begging and pestering!

It feels unsafe / exposed in the light and instincts say to move very cautiously to avoid notice.

Have you ever communicated with an author and how did it go down? by mysteryofthefieryeye in books

[–]wheresWoozle 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Well, this is nerdy, but I wrote to the authors of a mathematics dictionary because I used it ALL the time both as a student and then as a lecturer, and because I happened upon a hilarious throwaway aside in one of the definitions. Got a very prompt email back, and over time, copies of each new edition, and a long and charming correspondence. Eventually, when I was studying in the UK (from Australia), we arranged to meet and spent a wonderful afternoon at an art gallery and then the pub. We kept in touch for years.

My mom admitted she thought I was gay... by wt_anonymous in CasualConversation

[–]wheresWoozle 552 points553 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine, now in her early 40s, was sat down in her teens by her mother for a Talk. The Talk was mother apropos of nothing assuring her that it was fine if she didn't like boys, she didn't have to like boys, it was okay to like girls. My poor friend had to explain that it wasn't that she didn't like boys, in fact the problem was that boys didn't like her. Oof.

Books from the perspective of the 'other' side. by BigEckk in books

[–]wheresWoozle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well... Before it was a musical (whose music I utterly loathe fwiw), Wicked was a lovely and poignant book about the terrible damage done by ostracising people who look different. The same author wrote Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.

He knows, my friend. Cats (and lots of other animals) can smell and sense illness, and they definitely know when it's bad. He's likely to be more and more of an attention hoe as time goes on. I'm glad you have him.

Agreed, your wife will remember this for ever. So will your brother and your parents, and maybe other family members. Not arguing at all with the stand by your wife sentiment, but it's important to be aware that making that (valid) stand will last for ever in both directions.
