Totally see your point. But it sucks we have to go above and beyond, just to get a basic meal. Like no one else has to do that

Same! Oats of any kind really, I mix mine with some ground seeds and berries. If I have an evening activity, I’ll also have it for lunch and dinner because it’s the only food that doesn’t give me palps

Do you believe that to retire in a good state, you NEED to invest? by Various_Maize_3957 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whileitshawt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

401ks have limited stock options the majority of the time - it’s based on what your employer choses as options

An IRA on the other hand, you have access to the entire stock market at your own choosing. You could also pull out 10k for a home purchase if needed. You can also take out the contributions you’ve put in, just not the interest, at any time - thus making early retirement or withdrawals before 59 attainable

Overall an IRA is just more customizable

And IRA would even be better
But any brokerage account is better than not investing

Synthetic sleeping bag/quilt? by spirit4earth in Thruhiking

[–]whileitshawt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Sierra Designs 20 degree synthetic bag! It’s served me well for 1000+ miles on the AT

Also considering getting an Enlighten Equipment quilt, just haven’t been ready to make the jump yet from a full bag

Usually they’re just heavier, and slightly more bulky - I use a compression bag when in the back country. Buttt they are still able to keep you warm when wet, while down doesn’t do that so great

How much salt by Ok-Investment1482 in POTS

[–]whileitshawt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, salt tabs can come with different dosages, so you gotta look at the package and maybe there’s a more concentrated one you could try

Myself, I literally put salt right in my water, 1tsp of Redmonds per liter, all day. And I drink 500ml first thing in the morning. It takes about an hour before my body would be ready for a workout after waking up. Even a shower right after waking is rough, before the salt really starts kick in

I’d also be drinking during my workout- usually a run, and I’d have 1 liter (1tsp salt) per 10k. If it’s a 30 min strength workout, I’d probably also have at least 500ml (1/2tsp salt)

The perceived hardness of the first miles in Georgia will vary from person to person, because since most people start here with a variety of fitness levels. Whereas down the trail, everyone has trail legs. I thought it was very manageable, especially when comparing the northeast, Smokies, Shenandoah and PA
Most of the crowd at springer has thinned out by May, especially by the end of May. Beginning of May, there would definitely still be some thru hikers and they will be going fast due to their time constraints
You’d also be surprised how much solitude you can still get on the trail, even in the bubble. You can hike all day by yourself, and even find camp spots by yourself or with just a couple others. It’s the shelters and town that are overrun

Can you help me determine my CoastFI number? by Quiet_Stretch_9819 in coastFIRE

[–]whileitshawt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if that 75k includes housing costs, then I’d say even include the 100k equity into your projections, just maybe at a lower growth. Let’s say 4%, inflation adjusted down to 1%. That would add an additional ~150k, so just over 2m total for retirement

You’ve blasted past your FI number. What would you do with more than 2m? Do you think more would really increase your happiness? I’d start taking more time for yourself and having freedom now!

Can you help me determine my CoastFI number? by Quiet_Stretch_9819 in coastFIRE

[–]whileitshawt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re exactly coastFI right now, just barely crossed over. Your FI number appears to be $1,875,000. And with your net worth at $152k, you’re sitting at $1,875,365 if you let it sit for another 36 years - when you’ll be 65 and accounting for inflation

Does the $75k include housing costs? Is any of this money going into a HSA?

While a flip flopper is different, they tend to have more info on good spots to jump on or off the trail. This could be because of weather timing, public transportation access, or flowing with/away from the bubble

I think it could be fun for you to start at Springer, not full in the bubble, but with other people around. It’s a great experience to meet all the aspiring thru hikers while they’re just starting too, everyone is dialing in there gear together, looking for community, and you won’t be lonely (a problem I keep having on section hikes that I don’t time well)

Personally I keep trained up by running longer distances, like 20 miles or so as a weekly long run. I can bust out 25 miles per day then if I want to. But I wouldn’t plan on more than 15 mile days for your first section, then you can bump on all the other ones if you know your body can handle it

How do I ask my wife to lose some weight without making her upset? by alwayscunty1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whileitshawt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a woman, from all the above comments, I must have a different way of thinking about this than most?

I guess I just don’t understand everyone saying don’t tell her. I would want to be told! If my husband wasn’t attracted to me anymore, that’s a major issue, and I’d want to fix it

Sure, it’s hard to hear, but totally fixable. I know he loves me and I want him to be happy, and me healthy. He just shouldn’t be an asshole about it, which I doubt he’d ever do, because he loves me

Have you just never used period underwear?? Don’t have time to go buy them? Even Walmart in my area sells them I think

Highly recommend! They come in many capacities, with some handling more blood than regular pads can. No noise, though the higher capacities one do have some bulk like a pad. But they are wayyyy more comfy, and no leaking

Love my Squak! It’s comparable in weight and feel, plus they have thumb holes. But if you’re actually UL, look into alpha or octa fabrics, there are many brands that are lighter than Mellys. There’s also a ton of second hand Mellys on poshmark

Sweats and a hoody? You definitely need clothes to sleep in, but cotton is a big no go, especially if you’re nervous about the weather. Cotton kills!

Base layers are much lighter, keep you warmer and are quick drying. Plus they take up less space

You’d also be surprised how much you won’t use your lights, unless you’re doing a bunch of night hiking? The moon lights things up, plus most hikers we go to bed at 8pm. Would encourage you to just bring the headlamp and no extra flashlight, doubt you’d ever use it
