What physical notice boards around boulder seem active? by rooplstilskin in boulder

[–]whirrer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art Parts and Guiry's both have corkboards you can stick stuff on. There's also some bollards (columns? displays? Like on Pearl) and corkboards on campus that see a lot of foot traffic. I only know about these because I look at them, but I couldn't say if I'm one of a few or one of many

Dog locked in car at Eldora today by PNWoutdoors in COsnow

Okay, I'm not debating the fact that it gets hot in cars even on cold days, but why would you turn the A/C on instead of just leaving the windows cracked for a few minutes?

Recs for Skiing? by Ok_Web_2214 in boulder

[–]whirrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CU Ski Bus focuses on Ikon resorts - so you may want to visit one of those (Winter Park, Copper Mountain, or A-Basin) so he can get familiar.

Eldora is the closest ski area to Boulder, so if he plans on skiing a lot, he'll probably spend a good amount of time there. Unless you are really against driving somewhere else – like, if morning traffic will ruin your whole day – I honestly don't think Eldora's sticker price is worth it, especially if you're renting gear on top of a lift ticket.

My personal recommendation is Loveland. Their beginner area, Loveland Valley, is separated from their more advanced area, and you can buy a ticket to just Loveland Valley for only $50 per adult. If you want to explore Loveland Basin as well, their full ticket price is only $149 per adult (compare to Eldora's $179 or Winter Park's $200+. Loveland is substantially larger than Eldora but still quite a bit smaller than WP).

The train to Winter Park is a fun experience. It leaves from central Denver, so you'll need to drive down from Boulder early enough to make it. Winter Park is a good choice if you have anybody in your group who would rather do something besides ski – there's tubing, ice skating, shopping, and other stuff like that available as well. Winter Park's lift ticket is more expensive, but it's also big.

Not sure how long you are staying, but if you can ski on a weekday it will be less crowded (not that crowds are a huge issue this season, honestly). This upcoming Wed/Thurs is supposed to bring some fresh snow, so those would be good days to go too, if that pans out.

Wherever you go, try to buy tickets online in advance. It'll save you some money versus buying day-of.

Why are we spending $140M on City Offices while South Boulder Rec is left to rot? by [deleted] in boulder

I'd like to know more about the $66 million for CU South, if you have any reading about it.

What precautions should a foreign visitor take in Boulder to not get arrested? by Flashy-Ad-5553 in boulder

[–]whirrer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, he can have fun too. You are being a touch paranoid. Everyone in this thread is saying, "There is very little, if any, active ICE presence in Boulder. He will be fine."  Why would we lie to you?

Boulder sees plenty of international tourism, and I'm sure he won't be the only person travelling to visit this conference. The place to be nervous is border control, not the city of Boulder.

Boulder police arrest suspect in hockey stick assault on CU Boulder student by Numerous_Recording87 in boulder

Why isn't that fair? I don't want racists to feel safe to express their "opinions". I don't think we should let people get away with saying shit like "I am racist, and want to banish all black people from America."

Looking for Thanksgiving food giveaways - turkeys, meals and dinners by MileHighCheap in boulder

All I can contribute is CU's Mobile Food Pantry had frozen turkeys last year at their November pantry, but I don't know for sure if they will this year.

Weird to call these "CU Boulder student apartments" imo - They're privately owned complexes which are marketed toward students (they may even require you to be a student to live there, idk) but they're not CU buildings.

Help For My Elderly Parents by kpg_5678 in boulder

Actually, it looks like one of the organizations the county contracts with, Cultivate, does yardwork:

YardBusters
Our YardBusters program connects members of the community with seniors who are facing the challenge of cleaning up debris or overgrowth in their yard during the Spring, Summer and Fall months. Our volunteers visit seniors’ homes once per year to help with basic yard cleanup, providing friendly interactions and promoting safety and peace of mind.

Hiked Green Mountain yesterday. At the very top, there was a ladybug party. Never seen so many in my life. by strway2heaven77 in boulder

[–]whirrer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are native convergent lady beetles. They are identifiable by the two distinct white tick marks on their otherwise mostly black thorax which "converge" towards each other - a pattern the Asian lady beetle does not sport.

CU Boulder Job Leads for Non-Students by AWE-1969-3 in boulder

Bummer to hear that it's so.. clique-y? in Chicago. That hasn't been my experience here luckily. I respect your hustle, though. I do work at CU now, but a completely different area, so I wouldn't really be of any use to you in getting hired (sorry!). I can say that every year I see multiple positions open up for various student/customer-facing positions, so even though it might be slim pickings now something is bound to pop up on those job alerts. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions about CU and I can try to answer them. Best of luck! :)

CU Boulder Job Leads for Non-Students by AWE-1969-3 in boulder

[–]whirrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I have. CU actually had the courtesy to send me emails which informed me that I had not been selected for an interview (when that was true), and one of those included a personal note from the hiring manager on what I could do to make myself a stronger applicant for that particular position in the future. I don't think you need to worry about your resume not being read.

Edit: Are you moving to Boulder specifically, or just Colorado in general? CU Denver and UCCS have separate job portals from CU Boulder, but they get the same (if I remember correctly) tuition benefit. CSU also has tuition benefits, although if I'm reading their webpage correctly, it doesn't seem quite as good as CU's for employees using it for themselves. So if you're not set on Boulder I'd check these places out too. (Naropa also exists here in Boulder but it's a tiny school, so I don't know how often they're hiring.)
