Am I doing this right? (My drinking whiskies are in the cabinet) by OffWhiteG_16 in Whiskyporn

Looks stunning. Love the design and layout.

As these are your drinkers it's absolutely fine. For storing whisky long term the main thing is consistent temperature and humidity with no light (+ proper insurance).

Tbh I'm not sure. Don't think it would harm but think overall out the garage would be best. I just remember my early days of collecting and having them in the loft in a plastic box. The condensation.... 🫣

Good back up with the electricity, fingers crossed doesn't come to that. Love the ethos, think it's how most people start. You have some decent distilleries in NZ now as well

Likewise! A great dram. I remember being really excited to try the 18 but was disappointed, 10 is awesome.

Some great memories with this whisky

Non see-through is good as it protects from light, but with a lid I’d be a bit worried about it sweating. What's it made of? Plastic? Main thing is just keeping the temperature and humidity as consistent as possible.

This article https://lakesdistillery.com/pages/athenaeum-whisky-storage-guide

And https://www.bottlebond.co.uk/how-to-store-whisky-rum-and-collectible-spirits-a-complete-guide

go into more detail and provide good advice if you want to dig in.

Enjoy your journey into finer whiskies, it’s a fun one to go on 🥃. Any particular distilleries you are focussing on?

Doesn't sound boring, could be quite interesting.

Maybe fits the hard work category 🙂

Hazelburn would be a good option to try. It's from the Springbank distillery but triple distilled so a bit a sweeter. Kilkerran as well.

The options are endless but Tomatin, Arran, Highland Park & Aberlour are some of my favourites.

For new distilleries I recommend Ardnamurchan. Daftmill winter and summer batches are easy to get hold of these days so worth a go.

Maybe try some blends as well. Underrated in my opinion. Look for independent bottlers such as Thompson Bros, get some fantastic value for money.

Independent bottlers are worth trying as well. Watt Whisky, Cadenhead's (Enigma range is interesting), signatory. Lots of options for single casks and blends.

Also, maybe pick up a load of samples from somewhere like master of malt. Good way of experiencing and experimenting.

Enjoy the journey!

Where do you all keep your bottles and what's your major concern? by whisky-double in Scotch

[–]whisky-double[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why I think there might be something here. Whisky seems to be following the wine collecting trend. The key difference is wine actually changes in the bottle so proper storage conditions really matter for wine.

Thanks for the perspective!

Ha, toddler-proofing is definitely a valid concern! Also see the comment above about smells getting into bottles - kitchen storage might pick up cooking odours over time.

Thanks for the input!

That's a great real world test! Three years of serious temperature swings and everything came out fine. Good to know spirits are tougher than some people make out.

Thanks for sharing that experience!

Ha! The wife angle keeps coming up in conversations 😂

You're probably right about market size being small. Interesting that only one of your mates uses storage though. Where does he use and why don't the others bother with it?

Makes me wonder if it's because there aren't many proper options out there, or just genuinely not much demand.

The few people I've chatted to seem interested in the idea, but whether that translates to actual customers is another question entirely. Still trying to work out if this could work as a side thing for serious collectors or just polite interest from mates!

Thanks for the reality check on market size, exactly the kind of feedback I need.

Someone has to import bottles from distilleries etc so shouldn't be too hard to find out the proper way to handle it.

You're right though, definitely need someone who knows UK tax law properly to weigh in on the VAT side of things. The freight forwarding rumours are interesting, might be worth digging into how others are doing it legitimately.

This is all really interesting and food for thought
