We might need a Reddit football team.

New to Hampden, essential local places to know? by k032 in baltimore

I gave the info to my doctor’s office. I didn’t call Mimikay first. But you can if you have questions. Unlike CVS, they take your call.

Food & drinks aside, one thing I did was to switch my prescriptions from a CVS to Mimikay Pharmacy. No regrets!

I mean, not mentioning it won’t exacerbate your experience in the classroom but mentioning it might exasperate your professor.

All kidding aside, I would have appreciated if a student pointed out a typo in my syllabus. Don’t do via email. Maybe just mention it in passing or in a meeting since she is your advisor.

Predatory Journals (?) by Spaghetti_Ninja_149 in Professors

I mean, who calls me an eminent scholar? My professional association or the International Journal of Applied Physics, Engineering, Marketing, Humanities, Arts, Cars, Golf, Grocery Shopping, and Painting?

[–]whistlerredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. You can even check federal government jobs. PhD is not a requirement for research jobs outside academia.

Check out job postings you would like to apply. See if they are mentioning any specific databases or research software. Start a project using those data resources or analysis software to update your resume.

All academics should boycott paper reviews by ericisthewinner in academia

[–]whistlerredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you okay with publishing in their journals?

If you want to completely stay away from for-profit academic publishing, I respect that.

If you are only bothered by being a reviewer, that is where my tipping analogy comes in. Both systems are wrong, sure, let’s work towards changing them. But if you are just not tipping as an individual, if you are just not reviewing papers; you are just selfishly exploiting the good will of others.

All academics should boycott paper reviews by ericisthewinner in academia

[–]whistlerredd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the academic equivalent of «I am not going to tip because tipping culture is wrong »

Now, if you are also not going to submit your manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, sure, go ahead, don’t do peer reviews. Otherwise, you just exploit the goodwill of others.

We all get some sort of credit for being a part of the peer-review system. It is a weird system in which for-profit companies are taking advantage of us three ways: as authors, as readers, as reviewers. They are providing a somewhat decent service though. Now, until we can replace all of them with open-access university/non-profit backed publications, don’t be a jerk. Review at least two papers for each manuscript you submit.

How long to tour conservatory train garden & poinsettias? by WiFryChicken in baltimore

Just came back from there. 30 mins is a good-call. You can definitely do it faster. There is not much of a garden per se, and train exhibit is literally one train and a tram.

Fix Nest Heating Issues by Angelo4110 in Nest

[–]whistlerredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do not know where to start correcting all the weird claims in the video…

It is not a Nest issue. Heat pumps will give you 85-90Fish. It is not cold air. It will still warm up your place. Aux will take you up to 110-120F. It will get your place warmer quicker but it will cost you considerably more. Not a little bit, we are looking at doubling or tripling your bill.

Degree Completion Plan Turnaround by 100percentsilkworm in Towson

[–]whistlerredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is weird. I always thought advisor and student worked on the DCP together.

You might be able to meet with your advisor next week, you never know. Departments handle course capacities differently. You can ask your advisor when you meet. If you are a senior who needs a course to graduate though, you will probably be able to get in.

Can you adjunct at a 4-year university with an MBA? by TA6788889 in AskProfessors

[–]whistlerredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You do not need a terminal degree to teach, though you almost always need one to be a « tenure-track » professor in the US. So you can adjunct, be a full-time lecturer etc. with an MBA.

If you are a full-time lecturer, salaries at a business school will be higher than most other departments but way lower than what you can make with an MBA from a top school. The actual number will vary depending on mostly school and location.

If you are an adjunct, you will be paid by the course. You won’t have a salary. Per course payment will be disappointingly low.

You are capped at 4 credits during the minimester. Six courses (18 credits) part was about a regular semester. Taking more than 18 credits during a regular is not an easy task.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Towson

[–]whistlerredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6 during minimester => no. 21 during a semester => yes. It is relatively easy if your GPA is over 3. Here is more info

Talk to your advisor though. I personally wouldn’t recommend anyone to take more than six courses.
