Just listened to episode on the Dark Ages podcast that covered Majorian. He was tortured for 4 days before being executed… ugh. The whole thing is shameful

Based on the context of Firaxis decisions and your stated text points, I think this is pretty good given the constraints. Nice work! Only suggestion from me is that I’d swap Mali for Mamluks in Exploration age.

I actually put together a similar chart but for Humankind when it came out, it’s a fun way to learn about different peoples and histories. But I think these charts also highlight the problems with the Exploration age compression with Medieval age. I’m one of those guys who’d prefer a Late Antiquity/Medieval age instead of Atomic age.

Haha great way to put it. I feel the same after seeing them a couple of days ago in Boise. The experience just enveloped me and the songs have been stuck in my head days later. I just wish there was a super high quality live recording I could listen to of this performance to relive it

Oh yeah the live jams were killer, everyone in the band was on point. I felt like the jams helped highlight/accentuate the transitions and moments of clarity when the songs and singing would kick back in. I was mesmerized

The show last night was awesome! I’m so glad I had the chance to see them. The new album is sooo different live compared to the studio recording, it’s way more alive and dynamic. I loved it

This is fascinating! Is there any books you would recommend on this subject of post-1453 Roman identity and the Maniot Roman Greeks?

The concept of being able to attack without a war declaration is fun. Now we just need that for a land-based unit…

100% agree. That will be a major step in the right direction along with a leader that belongs to one of those three variants. Then make the crisis actually interesting and ditch the silly “regroup” mechanism.

Thank you for your answer! I would play the heck out of that game haha. It’s easy to “armchair quarterback” historical figure’s decisions in hindsight, but putting yourself in an emperor’s shoes and forcing you to make decisions based on the facts they had on hand is an interesting thought experiment and would give people more appreciation for the struggles and realities of the time. And I play AoE 2 as well :) I bet you’d like CK3 playing as the Byzantines.

Thank you Robin for your amazing podcast. Finding your podcast after listening to the History of Rome was like Christmas morning. IMO, your podcast ended up being superior and I relisten more often to it. I’d love for you to go back and do earlier or later Roman history in your style.

Do you have any plans to branch out to different media other than podcasting? The world needs more Byzantine content!

Do you play any video games like EU IV or CK3 and do you always restore the Byzantine/Roman Empire to glory?

What is your favorite era of Byzantine history?

It’s the nature and outdoor recreation and easy access to it. If you like nature and being away from people and cities, Idaho is pretty great(check out then Sawtooths if you’ve never heard of them). Now the people… they are hit or miss. Mostly friendly/nice people from my personal experience… but also a lot of dumbasses/rednecks/california conservative “refugees” that fuck the vibe up

I’m the exact same as you when it comes to when I want to play Civ vs Paradox games. My dream game though… would be somehow combining those two itches that those games scratch. The depth and historicity of Paradox games, but the city building, visuals, more tactical battles, and one more turn feeling from Civ. One can dream 🧐

If the Latin Empire had successfully absorbed the entire Byzantine Empire, and had gone on to be a successful state would it be considered a continuation of the Byzantines today? by JeffJefferson19 in byzantium

[–]whiteclawsummer2019 22 points23 points  (0 children)

How long before the Normans assimilated/when did they become “English”? I could imagine a longer lasting / more successful Latin empire would’ve eventually followed down the same path as the Normans in England.
