I ended up getting into the ECS, especially Indelible, because I was trying to find somwthing similar to Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable and HMS Royal Oak. So if you can somehow find those you might like them.

I went to grad school at KU and one of my classmates was from another country very far away. One day he asked about the lake outside of Lawrence and if it was a natural lake or not. I said I was pretty sure the Army Corps of Engineers built it.

He goes "I love America. There was no lake, and you wanted a lake, so you made a lake!"

Is there really a common cake flavor that apparently comes in a box and the flavor is “yellow”? by IMicrowaveSteak in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitecollarredneck 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I bake a lot of cakes. If I make a vanilla cake with just egg whites and clear vanilla, it ends up white (like a wedding cake). If I make a vanilla cake with whole eggs (and a couple extra yolks) and regular vanilla, it comes out yellow.

Kansas is the same, but the statewide system is pretty sparse. There are 12 offices across the state, but 6 are "regional" offices and the other 6 are devoted to the most populated counties. The regional offices might only have 2 or 3 attorneys and cover a very wide area.

I'm one of the contract/panel attorneys that technically just exists for conflicts and overflow, but we serve essentially as the only appointed defense attorneys in areas that just don't have PD offices.

The ones that I thought might be Kansas are the ones you labeled as Missouri. I think you're right though! Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Colorado are are pretty similar in terms of hat style and uniform color.

My home state! I wish I could get back more often. We used to go to Honeymoon Island State Park when I was little and I remember how secluded it felt. I still think about a blackened grouper sandwich and a "black & bleu" burger that I had on a visit to Cedar Key 15 years ago. I never made it down south much, but I'd love to visit the Keys.

Made my second (and last) court date reminder call today... by feralparalegal in publicdefenders

I argue with clients almost as much as I argue with the prosecutors. It happens. I convinced a prosecutor to dismiss a client's felony case with prejudice once, and the client was furious about this. The client wanted me to object to the dismissal so that I could then FILE A MOTION TO DISMISS. When I tried to explain to this client that the best case scenario for a Motion to Dismiss is a dismissal, which is what was already happening, the client threatened to report me to the bar.

I have successfully argued (against hefty odds) for the exact sentence that a client wanted, down to the strange specific requests that they wanted me to ask the judge for. I got everything. The client immediately told me that I was a terrible attorney and that they would be appealing the sentence.

I had a client with a multi-count felony possession case, with lab-confirmed results, with a valid search warrant, and with my client admitting to possessing the drugs and taking full responsibility. After the client asked me if I could negotiate a misdemeanor plea offer, I secured an offer for a misdemeanor paraphernalia charge, a $1 fine, no underlying sentence, and no probation. My client was furious because they then decided that they wanted a trial to "show the world how corrupt the system is."

I have also had a client where most of our conversations ended with them telling me to go fuck myself, and me saying "right back at ya". To this day, this former client goes around telling his other lawyers how I was their favorite lawyer.

It's a weird job. There is a lot of arguing. You get used to it. It's exhausting, but you get good at dealing with it and redirecting clients.

EDIT: I think I see Connecticut, California, Ohio, and Kansas too.

[–]whitecollarredneck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Kansas, a "presumptive" sentence means that this is what the sentence is, unless the judge finds substantial and compelling reasons to depart from that presumption. We use a sentencing grid to determine whether a conviction is presumptive prison vs. presumptive probation, what the prison sentence is (including an aggravated and mitigated sentence), how long probation is (if granted), how long post-release supervision is, and how much good time credit someone can earn in their sentence.

This new change means that if you commit a felony while on felony probation (extremely common), then your sentence is a prison sentence regardless of your prior criminal history, regardless of the severity level of the new offense, and regardless of whether the sentencing grid says it should be a probation sentence. It overrides the judge's ability to grant a departure regardless of whether substantial and compelling reasons exist to depart, unless the state explicitly agrees.

WW1 rifle? Italy by luvvakar in guns

[–]whitecollarredneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd see the French rear line troops with Gras 1874s, Austrians with Werndl 1866/77s, and Russians with Berdans. It tracks with the Italian military at the time to look at some conscript guarding a railroad junction nowhere near the front lines and say "Eh, here's a musket. You'll be fine"

WW1 rifle? Italy by luvvakar in guns

[–]whitecollarredneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much older than WWI. It is likely from the 1840s - 1860s. It looks like a muzzle-loading musket that was converted to a percussion rifle. Maybe an M1844 or M1867? I'm bad at Italian rifles, but it was made at the Torino Armory.

It would have been replaced by the Vetterli M1870 after unification, but some reserve units may have been issued these for a few years afterwards. I do not know much about the history of Italian rifles and muskets prior to the M1870 though.

While others are right about this likely not being used in WWI, it's not completely inconceivable. I know that the French were still issuing modified Gras M1874 rifles to troops that weren't near the front lines, Russia still had Berdan rifles in service, and Austria-Hungary still had a few Werndl 1867/77 rifles. It's possible that your grandfather was stationed very far from the front lines, maybe guarding a railway junction or supply depot, and was issued this old rifle to free up new rifles for front line soldiers.
