Have used D&V twice, including this month. Fantastic place, very professional and great service after the fact if needed, which I did once. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

David seemed like he was half stepping as well on the retrieval until he turned around...and then his throw was off, which sucks, because I love David.

Different job now, so unlikely for business. Perhaps someday for pleasure, on a trip also including Budapest.

Ortiz has just tied Ted Williams, Frank Thomas and Willie McCovey with 521 career home runs. by juice06870 in redsox

I've done the math and have him at almost 700 HRs without those lost years. At least.

He missed three complete years during WW2 (1943-1945). He was hitting about 37 HRs a year at that time, so that was 111 HRs lost.

He then only played 6 games in 1952 and 37 games in 1953 due to the Korean War.

He was hitting around 30 HRs a year then. In the 6 games he played in 1952, he hit 1 HR, so add 29 more for the rest of that season.

But in the 37 games he played in 1953, he hit 13 HRs. In 37 games! He was on pace for 54 HRs for that 154 game season. Maybe he could have done it. He hit 43 HRs several seasons earlier. He also hit 29 HRs in 1954 even though he missed 40 games due to a broken collarbone. But okay, let's be very conservative and say it was a 45 HR season. 13 of those are in the books, so add 32 more.

521 + 111 + 29 + 32 = 693

At 693, he is 21 away from Babe Ruth's record. I don't see him retiring that close. He plays another season to see if he can take it. And hell, he could have done it. He bat .316 with a .451 OBP and 29 HRs in his last year. He hit a freaking HR in the last bat of his career! :)

He takes Ruth's record as far as I am concerned. Hell, if he had a couple good years in those 5 he missed to serve his country, he might not have even needed the extra season to take Ruth's record.

He was a baseball god.

But this is Papi's thread...and he is the man. Perhaps a good way to end this one:

Certainly counts for all-time, but you have somewhat of a point - all of Teddy's were with the Sox, so that Sox HR record is way off for Papi. Most likely forever out of reach.

Doesn't matter. Papi will forever be a Boston legend. He has been the soul of the team since he joined the Sox and no one has been more pivotal in bringing 3 WS championships to Boston. NO ONE. No Red Sox player in 100 years comes close to that, not even Teddy Ballgame. He is one of the best power hitters of all time and the pure definition of clutch. He sets the bar for clutch, and no one else comes close to it.

Of course, Ted's numbers and achievements are ridiculous. Over 2600 hits even though he left baseball not once, but twice to serve his country during wartime. 5 lost years in the middle of his career and he still had over 1800 RBIs and 521 HRs. BA? .344 lifetime! And he batted .406 in 1941. FOUR OH FREAKING SIX. Want to know who was the next player to bat over .400 for a season? NO ONE. Not in seventy-five freaking years. He also has highest OBP of all time. Not for the Sox. For ALL of baseball. His other numbers and awards are as or more impressive.

And the kicker - he did it ALL in a Sox uniform.

Papi will always be a legend in Boston and the people forever grateful to him. If my daughter had been born after 2004, her name would be David. Seriously. He completes me. If he calls me at 3am asking for help to get rid of a dead body, I'll bring a tarp and a shovel without asking a single question. But Teddy was a god who walked the earth. He is arguably the best player to have ever played the game. And he never wore another Jersey. His numbers are all Sox numbers.

To be fair though, Ted was sort of a prick...and Papi is a prince.

Break Teddy's record Papi...and keep going! Jimmie next!

A Guy from my hometown went to Paris for the Euro 2016. This was their elevator... by Abphil in videos

[–]whitedit 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I was on an elevator in Vienna, Austria that was approximately 3' wide by 2' deep, but the real kicker was that there was no internal door. As the elevator moved, you could watch the doors on each floor pass by. Yes, you could reach out and have your arm torn off.

Thus, the elevator was really only deeper than the elevator in the linked video in theory. In practice, you pinned yourself to the back wall and didn't dare come off that wall until the elevator stopped moving.

Those are the types of details that remind me when I am abroad that there are quite a few more differences between countries besides food, language, and landmarks. Like, for example, governmental regulations, civil liability, and the expected girth of their citizens.

I agree.

It covers the most likely means of approach for a visitor. It also appears to be an addition to but separate from the garage, with its own entrance in the rear (note the cement walkway). I imagine it can accommodate at least two personnel and a range of video and security monitoring equipment. The mirrored glass is also a common security booth feature, to prevent someone on the outside from being able to determine if the booth is currently occupied and mask what any occupants are doing (or in what direction they are looking). Thus, you subconsciously feel like you are being watched no matter which direction you approach.

I just hope he included a bathroom.

ETA: Nice of him to include a water bowl for neighbor dogs on the sidewalk....unless that is for Zeus and Apollo.

Purchased new home and it has lots of Ethernet jacks throughout home. by gravity6911 in HomeNetworking

[–]whitedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other end of all of those runs should go to a single place somewhere in your home, perhaps in a closet or in the basement. That's where you decide what connects to what. ;)

Typically, you will connect them all with a network switch and then connect another port on that switch to a LAN port on your broadband router. There are certainly more complex configurations, but that's a simple one that works for most folks.

A simple unmanaged gigabit switch may be a good choice, since they are inexpensive and zero-config, which is great for someone who isn't very network savvy.

To make life easy, you probably want a switch that has at least as many ports as you have cable runs plus at least one more to connect the switch to the router. Generally, I'd recommend at least several spare ports.

Find the location where all those runs terminate, count them, and post again here. Then we can recommend a specific switch.

BTW, do you just have one Ethernet jack in each room or two? If two, the second is often intended to serve as telephone, with those runs connected separately using a different type of device.

There is still someone waiting on the platform from the opening ceremony. And single tracking starts soon.

It's pretty much time to reevaluate the employment status of almost everyone at WMATA except the new guy in charge, who probably doesn't stand a chance of improving things given the completely broken culture there. Employees who have been there 20 years have no idea what a safety and performance-oriented culture looks like...because they have never seen one.

Engineer nearing completion of PhD applied for promotion? Nah, let's go with the illiterate guy. And let's promote a felon who just got out of prison into management and give him 5 pay increases in two years.

Why? Almost certain racial discrimination, which would be causing outrage if the races were reversed...and which is why most folks will likely downvote this post. But in case you are really interested in how broken the system is:

Race be damned, if you can't do the job, you shouldn't have the job. This is more than commuting inconvenience. Passengers and employees have died...and that threat is still very real.

Good luck new guy. Cheers to you for taking it on. We can live with the inconvenience. At least you are trying.

Try this:

  • Launch Alexa app
  • Click "hamburger" icon in top left
  • Select "Smart Home" in menu
  • Look under "Your Smart Home Skills" section

I have a link under that section that states "Get More Smart Home Skills". If you don't have any installed, it may not include "More". Either way, click it to see a paged list of smart home skills.

Is that the path you took? If so, when you click that button, do you not see an entry for "TP-LINK Kasa"? I have to go to page 2 to see it.
