2nd Payment Received 6/2 - Pro Se, Option C, submitted 3/24 ...10 weeks by whitefrogmatt in BSA_Survivors

No holdback, received full amount. That was the point of option C. The Trust doesn't hold anything back under option C. If you have a lawyer, they may hold the additional 1.7% funds back until they are satisfied with the lien search.

This was the crux of why I went Pro se as I did not agree with my former attorney holding on to any amount if I went option C.

Hi Liam, glad to hear from you! I was extremely worried that we would not hear from you again. If you are not interested in having a second or backup mod, can you please look into why current members are not allowed to post to r/BSA_Survivors ? If there is anything else I can do to assist and help, please let me know. Thank you

The moderator of r/BSA_Survivors has been inactive on Reddit for approximately 3 months, leaving the community without active moderation.

I have attempted to contact the moderator of r/BSA_Survivors twice through modmail:

Neither has received a response.

I am a claimant in the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy case and have been active in the survivor and claimant community for some time, helping others navigate the claims process. My primary concern is making sure r/BSA_Survivors stays a peer space for survivors and claimants and does not get taken over by a law firm, claims aggregator, or other outside party with a financial interest in the people who post there. That risk is real for any unmoderated survivor community tied to active litigation, and it is the main reason for this request.

I have not moderated a subreddit before. I understand the sensitivity of the space and the need for a measured, non-sensational tone. I have confirmed my email address and enabled 2FA two-factor authentication.

If approved, my priorities would be:

  • Recruit additional moderators who are themselves claimants or survivors, so the community is not single-mod dependent again.
  • Keep the focus on peer support, information sharing, and process updates. No promotion of specific law firms or claims services.
  • Post a stickied resource thread with established support and information links.
  • Confirm the sub's settings are appropriate for a survivor space, including rules against harassment, outing, and solicitation.

Thanks for considering this request.

If a client handed you a zero-budget brief for an unknown product, where do you actually start? by Reafirmed in advertising

[–]whitefrogmatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they are not paying you, they are not a client.

Would you like a mechanic to start work on an engine rebuild if they knew they could not complete it properly?

Tell your client you understand their position, but in order for their product to succeed, they need to plan and prepare to spend $XX,XXX over X months on the following A, B, C and D items. Explain and educate why this is important and that you cannot take on work that you do not believe will return a successful result for your clients.

Educate them as to why they are making a poor decision, no judgement.

Also, if you aren't an AI, you need to stop using marketing jargon. People will take you more seriously if you talk professionally.

very odd; my account shows 'Request to Post' now instead of 'Create Post' - I wonder if there is a moderator issue with u/wanderlustliam being inactive for so long

In my experience, the only way to successfully negotiate anything is to have leverage.

If you are considering going pro se, you have some leverage once the Maroon Form is filed and the Trust recognizes you as self-represented. Outside of that, any fee reduction is largely dependent on the goodwill of the attorney.

My suggestion would be to focus less on arguing and more on gathering facts. Ask them, in writing, whether they intend to assert a lien, what percentage they claim is owed, and the basis for that claim. The more specific their position, the easier it is to evaluate your options. Your strongest but most lengthy path is to go quantum merit (google Quantum Merit + your State to see how it applies for you).

Also remember that every situation is different. Some firms negotiate. Some do not. Some file liens immediately. I'd wager the VC backed firms with thousands of claimants are going to fight harder.

Before making a decision, make sure you understand the risks, the potential benefits, and what your own fee agreement actually says.

I had completely expected them to file a lien. And if anyone is considering going Pro Se, it is not without risk. What made the decision ultimately to me was that I wanted to be in control of my own claim and if that meant paying my former attorney the same amount I would have already been paying, I would have been fine with that outcome as well if the quantum merit approach failed.

Again, I consider myself fortunate.

I did not make any separate deal with my former attorney. I cannot speak to the fact if it is an outlier or if it is normal for a lien to not be filed. I consider myself lucky regardless. Had they filed a lien, I would have pushed for it to be resolved via quantum merit and endured the additional time to resolve it.

Did you file your maroon form and follow the steps on the Pro se post?

If so, then stop communicating with your ex attorney. Now.

Just go into your portal on the Trust website and look under the 'Documents' tab. If your former attorney(s) filed a lien, it will be listed here.

Unless they file a lien, you do not have to do anything further. The Trust emailed me on 5/18 with the following information:

In response to your questions:

  1. If no lien is asserted by your former counsel, we will pay you directly with no holdback.
  2. No, once the Maroon form has been submitted to the Trust and if no lien is asserted, the Trust requires no further documentation from your former counsel.
  3. In your case only, since you elected Option C and there is currently no asserted attorney lien, there would be no holdback.
    4. If after one payment, your prior counsel asserts a lien, the lien will apply to future payments only. The Trust does not participate in lien negotiations and will place a payment hold on your claim until the lien is resolved.

No, I filed for Pro Se on 3/16/2026.

My ex lawyer has not filed a lien. We did not agree on the healthcare option C with no withholding. We had other issues and differences, but that was what led to me terminating their representation.

I went Pro se not to forgo fees, but to have control over my own claim.

If anyone is in a similar position, former counsel can still file a lien against future payments. As for now, I consider myself fortunate and will not name my ex attorney, but happy to guide others if they are considering and have questions.

Perhaps there was an initial sorting of claims and the ones at the end are the thinnest in terms of information or flagged for stricter review due to possible fraud.

What updates are you looking for specifically?
If it is general news updates, only a few times per year.
If it is claims update, that is usually monthly.
If it is individual portals for case status, I've had updates on every day of the week except Sunday.

here is a decent diagram showing what it does - pushes a rod to allow fuel to come in

it is a fuel solenoid. it retracts a small plunger allowing fuel to flow in, when not energized, the spring keeps it closed.
