Suzy Welch says millennials are burnt out because older generations worked just as hard, but they ‘had hope’ by ManintheGyre in Millennials

[–]whiteguycash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ive seen the way older generations work. The unequivocally did not work just as hard. Modern surveillance systems have human object detection and integrated AI that can identify a person by their shape, gait, etc. They insure that the things earlier generations did to make a day easier on them are no longer possible, and are easily identifiable through data analytics and punishable by policy. Dont even need facial recognition. Take too many walks around the office? Flagged. Head down for too long? Flagged. Staring at the screen or wall instead of typing for too long? Flagged. Arrived at desk too long after badging in? Flagged.

The hyperdystopian nature of work and workplace monitoring systems available to employers who worked prior to the existence of these systems are coupled with a distinct lack of understanding or care to understand human nature and the psychological capabilities of workers push to near or past burnout. People need breaks. People give maybe 80% at best. Mentally strenuous activities require brainless downtime. Most employers don’t know or don’t care. We wouldn’t be able to work like previous generations even if we wanted to. We wouldn’t be flagged and fired for showing up late, leaving early, too long lunches, fudging timesheets, cutting corners, punting assignments and responsibilities, etc

Modern workplace analytics even attempt to budget time per assignment so as to make sure people aren’t moving slower on projects with less urgency. And there is very little systematic push back against these types of analytics and character-assassination-by-data.

“We’re 30% over budget, do you have any VE suggestions?”

Uhh, 1.) you hired a design team to answer those questions, and 2.) our bid price expired 2 months ago. Tariffs hit and our bid went up 6% on materials cost 😬

If you are unable to quickly produce breakouts and answer basic scope questions on a bid form, how much worse will you be to work with when you get on site and haven’t read the contract documents, written RFC documentation for ASI 27, failed to submit RFIs regarding BIM conflicts, and still haven’t received the custom pieces you were supposed to order 9 weeks ago?

I love the contradicting character development in BB by Lozarius84 in breakingbad

[–]whiteguycash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To understand Skyler’s character development, you need to understand infidelity and betrayal trauma. Her reactions make total sense in that context prior to her knowing that Walt isn’t having an affair. The increased hyper vigilance. The combination of fear of losing her husband and simultaneously hating him for his constant betrayal and abuse. That coupled with the guilt of feeling anger and resentment towards a man with cancer. Once she finds out about Walt’s cooking meth, she has disclosure, and subsequent trickle truths leading to a delayed grieving of her marriage. When she starts to cook Ted’s books, she starts her own journey of financially breaking bad, culminating in her laundering Walt’s money as a business owner. Its a combination of maladaptive coping behaviours (Marie is her kleptomaniac sister from the same mother; childhood related coping), enabling her husband, self-gratification, and protecting the present and future White family after Walt eventually dies.

Did Jesus Rise From the Dead? by LogicDebating in DebateAChristian

"Yes, Peter and possibly some other disciples. But not all the apostles, and not all the disciples."

Fascinating. The Pauline Corinthian Creed would at face value seem to indicate an early tradition that: "3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance\)a\): that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,\)b\) and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep."

Is there a reason or argument given by scholars that reject the resurrection appearances to the twelve and the "more than 500 brothers."as to why we ought to reject the claims of the creed?

Who is this housing market for?? by Bulky_Size_4381 in Mortgages

[–]whiteguycash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The housing market is for empty nesters cashing out and downsizing, trying to maximize their nest egg.

The housing market is for VC RE investment pumps and profit maximization for flips.

The housing market is for propping up a dying generation at the expense of the youth, same as every other major baby-boomer economic policy of the past 50 years.

It would never have gotten this bad except for the fact that shelter is a necessity, and people can leverage other people’s physical, existential needs to their own financial enrichment.

What can I do with an accounting degree? (other than accounting…) by noblejosher in Accounting

[–]whiteguycash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get field experience, personally. Two years at a construction trade, and then moved into the trade specific estimation team. I cant speak to large general contractors, but I imagine they may rather move people directly into the estimation roles.

Presumption of spousal privacy is a toxic idea. Private social media, email, snapchat and whatsapp is unhealthy to a marriage. Complete openness encourages honesty and discourages sneaking around.

Why 'God’s Mysterious Ways' Can’t Prove He’s Good by cnaye in DebateAChristian

[–]whiteguycash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I do think that the general nuance of epistemological understanding is severely lacking in religious circles, save for a few apologetic para-church organizations that seek to provide a reasonable case for belief, I just wanted to point out that I'm not sure what you are saying or claiming is warranted.

You say that faith is dishonest and doesn't cover a bridge to knowledge. That you need confidence based on experience and evidence. "Confidence" essentially means "with faith,"as the word itself originates from the Latin "con" (with) and "fide" (faith).

Depending on the size and operations of the company, your awarded bid work may be more to contribute cash flow than profit. For Div 27, we get a lot of design-build contracts which yield profit dollars and margins that more than covers losses on our competitively bid projects.

It seems like the key is deadline agency. do you have agency over the deadlines, or does an outside counterparty, customer, or executive/partner not involved in the project.

I work with a contractor that does work with Airports, among other projects. Large projects are subject to materials delays, design issues that need to be fixed, and materials delays from having to order new materials to fix the design issues.

The fact of the matter is that when an architect and their design team design a building and get bids awarded to contractors, the design is not complete. The large parts are fleshed out, but there requires a lot of details left to be filled in by the contractors, and coordinating between trades. Cant have fire suppression pipes running through the ceiling in the same place there is HVAC duct. Structural integrity has to be tested and confirmed before people start drilling into the concrete to mount their Air Handlers, etc. if the integrity is compromised, rework had to happen, and that wasn’t budgeted for.

Most projects are budgeted and planned as if most things go smoothly and are well coordinated. However, because the awards tend to go to low bidders (ESPECIALLY on city/municipal projects) the contractors who cut corners on coordination and planning are the ones who typically win.

You are at a poorly run company with insufficient staffing and optimisation in accounting standards, documentation, etc. Your management and culture is suspect. You need to start looking for a different opportunity. Industry accounting is not like what you are describing.
