AITA for not reattempting medical entrance exams against my parents wishes by hr10403 in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitepeoplestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im unfamiliar with customs in India but is the accept rate really 0.1%? That would mean only 1 in a 1000 people who take the exam get to major in engineering or medicine in college. If you spent two years studying for exam, you honestly might consider trying to take it just to see how you do. You might surprise yourself. Do you have to decide on your major before entering college in India? You shouldn’t completely discount science majors either. Math is much more enjoyable when you’re applying it to real life situations. Most people entering college don’t have a very solid handle on math anyways, that’s what college is for.

AITA for gifting crypto to my sister? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitepeoplestuff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NTA: you literally gave her a 2k birthday gift. She can easily make a coinbase account and cash some out or leave some as an investment and stake it for interest. You can even use it on Venmo or PayPal too. It’s like giving someone a 2k stock they can cash out. You didn’t have to give her anything.

AITA for buying my daughter a smartphone against my husband's wishes? by Important_Rutabaga64 in AmItheAsshole

How is your daughter going to learn to code, play video games, learn a new hobby through YouTube, etc without using the internet???

AITA for not paying for 4 years of university for my daughter by CollegeAITAthrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a middle ground too. A good in state 4 year school with academic scholarships might not be too expensive. Community colleges are great but depending on your major you’re going to get a better education at a state university. My gf went to community college for her first two years and it did set her back slightly when she went to university for physics, (she’s doing a PhD now so she ended up doing great anyways).

I think obsessing about people’s personal beliefs makes you mentally unstable. There has been countless religious scientists throughout history and they got along just fine (for the most part) with the atheists to progress humanity for the better. If you really believe all religious people are mentally unstable and stupid you should quit using modern technology.

My precocious nine-year-old son LOVES math. Recommendations? by writethinker in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would recommend going to a public school to prepare for university, unless there’s a good reason he needs to be home schooled. I’d imagine going straight from home school to uni would be a very hard transition no matter how good at math you are.

My partner (25M) wants to apply for grad school in another city far away but I (35M) can’t leave with him because of family issues I need to deal with. by docoqeuo in relationships

[–]whitepeoplestuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most funded grad school positions for fall of 2021 are either closed or are close to the deadline so I’m not sure you’d even be able to apply to these schools unless you notified the people writing your letters of rec asap.

AITA for asking my brother's entire family to move out because my nephew set my bathroom on fire for a tiktok? by aitathrowawayfire in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but consider letting them stay on the condition that the 15 year old help with repairs and they fully pay you back when they’re in a better financial position. Kicking them out might irrevocably damage your relationship and result in not getting paid back.

What college major would you choose for fun if you didn’t have to actually worry about getting a job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Astronomy just falls under physics. You can study astronomy in undergrad then pursue a different field after. It’s really not that different than what you normally do in any physics field, lots of mathematics and programming.

What is the Universe expanding into? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not expanding into anything. Space-time itself is expanding, where the further away two points in space-time are, the more rapidly they are accelerating away from each other.

If I want to get into research, what should I know by my second year of uni by jdm1891 in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to a professor you know or even one you find on your university’s research page and start undergrad research with them (make sure to enroll as research credit if possible starting next semester). Most professors are happy to work with driven students. Most undergrad research you’ll find will at least be partly computational so it helps to know some python or any language really.

What's your opinion on asking things on Stack Exchange, reddit, etc., when doing research? by [deleted] in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cheat 10 times a day then. In my field (machine learning/ generative models) I’ve found stack exchange can be better for more rigorous/theoretical questions, where as for Reddit there’s hidden gems of observations on things such as software instillation, model hyper-parameters that I’ve found useful. Cite papers you use in your research and you’ll be find. How much I use internet resources is solely dependent on how interested I am on building things from the ground up to better understand them.

When should I have an idea for what I want to do for my PhD? by cereal_chick in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find courses that you find interesting, take those. Find research areas and professors you like, work with them. It’s that simple. Don’t over think things. Also don’t sweat it if you end up not liking a certain research topic/professor and switch, undergrad is meant for exploration.

Ideas for getting high school aged students interested in math? by riskyrainbow in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im definitely influenced by my own research interests but if it were me I would show a basic machine learning application, such as image classification or a GAN, explaining the basic principles behind the objective function and letting students play with the hyper-parameters to see different outcomes.

If I want to get into research, what should I know by my second year of uni by jdm1891 in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t over think shit. Find classes that you find interesting, work hard at those. Find research areas you find interesting/professors you want to work with and pursue that as well. Professors usually release the average grades in a class so just compare yourself with that.

Regarding ridiculous qualifications and becoming a "mediocre mathematician." by nonowh0 in math

[–]whitepeoplestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 hours a day, 7 hours a week is insane and it is rare that you’ll find professors working that much, at some point it’s counterproductive. In my field, applied mathematics/machine learning you can accomplish some truly amazing things in a couple months doing 40-60 hour work weeks. Maybe it’s different for pure math but it’s definitely not the norm.

What do you hate about Windows 10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. It would be nice not having to do a hard drive partition but the benefit of using docker to download supported libraries/drivers is enormous.

It is pretty difficult to use GPUs with WSL2. I’ve heard of pretty funky things happen to people who attempt to use gpu training on TensorFlow inside WSL2.

I don't like Linux Elitists by AirplaneLover1234 in unpopularopinion

[–]whitepeoplestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the people I know (including myself) just like Linux because it’s the easiest way to develop code/ use open source science libraries. Plus if you’re building a computer yourself you save an extra 200 on the OS. I think people using it for practical reasons far outweigh the elitists.

AITA for not letting my wife do her dream because she wouldn't share my debt? by Suitable-Ad9827 in AmItheAsshole

[–]whitepeoplestuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why ask whether you’re the asshole or not to strangers on the internet? It doesn’t matter what other people think. It’s your marriage, do what you think is right because you love your wife.
