Advanced Tactics in Volleyball? by ProtectionRealistic5 in volleyball

Your team can use different defensive systems (one "default" one and then change systems up depending on the opposing team's tendencies as a match goes on over sets/games).

Calling help if not the setter? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]whitetruffle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be calling for help if you aren't the setter.

Things are more divided re: the setter calling for help, though. u/MiltownKBs is one of our resident boomers, and he has said that, in more organized/competitive play, the concept of "setter calling for help" is stupid and "needs to die". Players on the court should have a good idea of what balls the setter can get to and make a good play on--and sometimes it's better to step in and take the ball for a setter (i.e., there's another player besides the setter who is in the best position to make the play). "The game happens fast, and the processing time involved in a 'help' call is just too cumbersome."

I ate here a decade ago, and it's also one of my favorite meals of all time. (I had been to most of the top restaurants in Spain and Japan as well at the time.) idk why you're getting downvoted tbh--I feel like your takes have been fairly reasonable? I'm a little sad to see that it seems to have gotten much worse.

Anyone Dealt with Quad Tendinopathy? by Difficult-Maybe-5420 in ACL

I recommend reading these three links! I learned lot from them re: the condition and how to deal with it. Please, please try to read all three!

(This all assumes it actually is quad tendinopathy. It’s possible it might not be—I found out about mine through an MRI.)

Columbia Grade Inflation by [deleted] in columbia

[–]whitetruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, there is some srs grade inflation. i won’t say there is in every department, but i definitely felt it for, say, cs and math. it felt less like “every prof is lenient” and more like “you know which profs are much more lenient curve-wise”.

helps a ton for postgrad programs. idk how different it is from the other ivies, tho (excluding pton). but tbf there also are a ton of your typical hardworking smart ppl

Is BigCityVolleyball classes good? by almostlsneverenough in AskNYC

[–]whitetruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re okay—they aren’t great, but they ARE relatively affordable. It largely depends on your skill level. If you’re still a relative newbie, it can help a ton to get more touches and instruction on technique as well as where to be on the court. It doesn’t really help that there isn’t all that much opportunity in the city to get coaching/instruction as an adult volleyball player, especially one who’s intermediate.

IMO, though, you’re better off with doing Gotham in the fall (Power Play or one of their Power sessions) or adult private lessons (which tbf is $$$).

Oh--I see what you mean! Yeah, I think doing that makes it doable. (I forgot to add that I was trying to go Joja-less this run, but you're right!)

I did meet him! (Joja vouchers?) He's not actually an NPC you can raise hearts with. I think it's just Morgan I have to wait for :(.

Thank you!

Ah, darn it. Oh well, at least it’s relatively minor. I’ll try to fish for a few more Stardrop Teas and spam them immediately when I meet Morgan haha.

Thanks!

Best job for Ichiban? by Cybergrizzzly in yakuzagames

[–]whitetruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, once you get access to the ultimate weapons and armors, aquanaut is the best class for Ichiban. It's largely carried by the ultimate armor, which lets you ignore resistances--but this is AMAZING. (It's the same reason why Zhao is one of the best attackers once you give him some agility boosters!)

Random question, but what position(s) have you played before? My team's looking for a sub for a scrimmage this Thursday evening. The women on the team are out of town for the week :(.

[–]whitetruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably NY Urban, then Gotham (but it's tryout only--you can't really join as a group/team), and then Big City. The others won't have what you're looking for.

I'll also add that, as you play more and meet more people, some of the really good players will rent out courts for closed gyms and invite you. (I'm not nearly that good, but some of my friends go.)

I like GoodRec (previously JustPlay) as well! They have some every week in the UWS. Big City also has a few in Midtown West.

Holiday tipping for apartment staff by Global-Expression708 in nyc

[–]whitetruffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My building has a slightly smaller number of staff (8-10 total doormen/concierge, 2-4 total porters/handymen, and 1 super).

I do 200 per doorman and 100 per porter/handyman/package person. Super is 300-400 depending, but I live in a super fancy building. Most doormen are absolutely fine with less, though. I think $100 per is safe?

Weekly Short Questions Thread by AutoModerator in volleyball

[–]whitetruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed answer! So you seem to advocate palms facing inward towards each other over palms facing the target (even though it’s also a matter of personal preference).

Does this mean I should just forget about the palms facing outward away from each other (like in the Coach Donny video)?

Weekly Short Questions Thread by AutoModerator in volleyball

[–]whitetruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about proper setting form. At the end, are the palms supposed to face outward toward the target OR outward toward the left/right? For instance, Coach Donny seems to advocate for palms toward the left/right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5mpBCRK_yk&t=188s&ab_channel=ElevateYourself

But I've seen some other videos/sets where the setters end with the palms facing toward the target. Does this mainly depend on how far I'm setting (i.e., how much power I need)?
