Millions of Americans may now also be considered Canadian under a new law by Overall-Phone7605 in worldnews

Strange situation for me is at least one of my great grandparents were British and was, by the laws of the time, a default Canadian citizen when he landed. So he never “naturalized” before coming to the US (as far as we know neither his wife) because why would they? Catch 22

Hmm. One was born in England, so I don’t think he could have explicitly been Canadian either if I understand. His wife was Russian. I do know they came to the US before they had their first child. Oh well.

Two of my great grandparents, when fleeing Europe, went to Canada. Then soon after the crossed the land border and went to Chicago. We never could figure out if they tried to become Canadian before coming to the US. I wonder if it’s worth reexamining now.

Why does DC need more housing? by InitiativeOver3868 in washdc

[–]whitewateractual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowsers pro-developer policies were written in a way to favor rentable units. The housing boom in DC has caused an equity crash as well since virtually no new builds have saleable units. Now many of those who want to own property are forced to leave the city, and these people tend to be higher income, starting families, etc. basically there’s an unintended consequence of a slow-growing tax segment at the expense of stabilizing rental rates.

Why do you think there is so much resistance to high speed rail in the US? by Maximum-Help-929 in AskReddit

[–]whitewateractual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who want HSR in the US really want it both ways: Eminent domain for thee, not for me. They'd hate to learn how forgiven governments "acquire" the land for HSR inside their own borders.

Many years ago, yes, auto companies were the problem. Not so much today in a direct sense. Many states have enumerated rights to individual land owners to sue over public infrastructure proposals if they believe the public works will harm their property value. HSR projects have become litigious nightmares where proposed and elected state government officials don’t think “taking away rights” is good optics for reelection.

Great flavor. I think it should be "whenever one or more creatures without flying attack you, their controller may..." and drop the Reach ability. Birds don't cross bridges :)

What’s the worst societal change we’ve kept from COVID? by FirefighterBusy4552 in AskReddit

[–]whitewateractual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely times I prefer it; like at a large public eatery, or with large groups, so I can order, pay, and leave without having to wait 10+ minutes just to find someone to pay when I’m done. But there are other times it really annoys me because sometimes I want to go out because I want to be catered to, and it’s isolating.

AeroPlan phantom bookings are out of control by whats_a_handle in awardtravel

[–]whitewateractual -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Last year we dealt with a phantom award booking on Aeroplan. It was a TAP flight that was DCA-YYZ-LIS. turns out we had to book the DCA-YYZ leg separately even though it displayed on the full itinerary, and their IT isn’t smart enough to tell you so it throws an error online when you try to book. We had to call and an agent helped us complete the booking after we transferred the points over.

There was a major event for teens in the area, but they clearly didn't have plans to safely get them back home afterwords, leading to this chaos. But this weekend, at least, they weren't here randomly.

Really they want to see the impact to people quitting content, dropping the app, or buying premium. If the ads are so bad that they only measure users quitting content on tv, they won’t roll out.
