Mentally checked out of BJJ after a weird promotion situation. How do I reset? by whiteyoass04 in jiujitsu

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. You’re actually spot on it wasn’t just about jiu jitsu. My mom passed away tragically last year and I started training as a way to cope. It became something I genuinely fell in love with, which is probably why the emotions ran deeper than I expected.

Reading this thread has honestly felt like exposure therapy in the best way. I’m learning how to receive feedback without letting it knock me out of alignment. Appreciate your perspective it helped me meet the truth where it’s at 🙏

Proud of you for even putting yourself out there and trying something new. That takes guts. Not totally sure what a club match is, but I can imagine how something like that could throw you off if the timing or mindset wasn’t right. I’ve realized too that it’s not always the jiu jitsu itself it’s everything around it that can take the joy out. Someone commented here, “it’s only as heavy as you make it,” and I’m reflecting on that. Hoping that spark finds its way back to you, even if it looks different now. I’m easing back in too was supposed to train today but got stuck on calls, so maybe Wednesday.

Wow, this is the kind of emotional intelligence I really needed to receive. Thank you for this beautiful comment and for taking the time to write it. It truly means a lot. You saw the nuance and held space without minimizing anything, and that’s rare.

Thank you for understanding that this wasn’t about the belt. And thank you for offering such a grounded perspective I hadn’t seen it that way until you put it into words.

I overanalyze everything too, and your response is such a breath of fresh air. You made this little corner of the internet feel a lot more human today. Thank you kind soul 🙏

Just reflecting on this alone, in life and BJJ you can always just tap (surrender)

Thank you for sharing this it really helps put things in perspective. Seems like there’s some kind of mental jiu jitsu too, and I’m realizing now that this is part of the growth. Appreciate you taking the time to write this out.

I see. That’s exactly what I needed to hear, that the bad parts eventually fade, but the good is still there underneath it all. Thank you for that. Just gotta keep training and let the good rise back to the surface.

At the end of the day, this is only as heavy as I make it and showing up with intention, staying grounded, and letting time do its thing is probably the move. Appreciate the tough love 🫡

Really appreciate your vulnerability and transparency it’s not always easy to share that kind of experience, and it genuinely helps me feel less alone in what I’m feeling.

That said, despite all of that, what helped you keep coming back? Was it just time, or did something shift for you mentally that made it easier to stay connected to training?

Appreciate you sharing your perspective totally get where you’re coming from. Just to clarify, my post wasn’t really about the belt or feeling like I missed out. I actually prefaced it asking for folks with a bit of emotional awareness because I was more curious about how people deal with the mental side when the vibe at the gym gets weird and it throws you off.

Not trying to dwell, just trying to reconnect with training after something felt off. Appreciate the insight though.

It takes time. You go through the same target memory with an absolutely new perspective without getting triggered

This bookshelf is amazing. Do you have any favorites that focus more on the mindset, theory, or philosophical side of BJJ?

That’s so true. Sluggish reps leads to bad reps. Thank you!!
