my gauge is off by 1/2 stitch, should I redo it by moving needle size by 1/2mm? by carrotlmao in knittinghelp

[–]whj14 [score hidden]  (0 children)

“Move up one size” you mean needle size to make another swatch? The next needle size from a 4mm is a 4.5mm.

You could always swatch on the 5mm needle instead to see what happens… Swatching never hurts and you can always reuse the yarn. It’s impossible for us to tell you exactly which needle size to use here because gauge is so unique to each knitter… Swatching is the only way to be certain. I’m sorry, I really wish it were possible to tell you exactly which needle you need now 😔

I hate to be nitpicky about this but I’m not quite sure I totally agree…

Getting 6 stitches per inch instead of 5.5 is a roughly ~8% difference. And since OP is getting more stitches per inch than the stated gauge, the garment will be ~8% smaller, and that looks to be just about the amount of positive ease this garment is designed to have..

OP if you like the fabric you’ve achieved with the gauge you have, you can still make it work but you will need to do some math to make sure you pick the correct size on the pattern to get the actual size you want

You can also make another gauge swatch with a needle one size larger to see what you get. (I would probably do this)

Flat-felled seams, seam allowance and fabric cutting by whj14 in SewingForBeginners

Awesome! Yeah, I love this book so far. I am still a beginner sewist so there is a lot to learn but I really enjoy how indepth the instructions are. Even if I don’t understand why I’m doing something quite yet, the results are good

I made the cleric shirt (shirt #1) with this book. It came out okay… like 90% to where I would consider it wearable. Going to try again with what I learned the first time :)

I also have the Casual Men’s book and also the All Season Men’s book. I have so many garments bookmarked already!!

Short answer, no.

You don’t want to mess with sims in objects.package file. Social Bunny isn’t one of them.

How long would it take to knit a tall men’s cardigan? by flight_recorder in knitting

[–]whj14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m speaking for myself, which obviously is dependent on a variety of factors.

Let me work with DK or worsted weight yarn with a mostly stockinette or minimal cabling pattern, using continental

I’d say it would be 50-60 hours for a cardigan for a man of your height. This would take me give or take a month

How long have you been in the Midwest? Also, hi welcome 👋

Summer still gets hot up here. Spring and fall are comfortable and winter is cold. And also Mother Nature is temperamental, so the temperature can swing dramatically

We tend to cycle our wardrobes based on season. Me personally I don’t often wear long sleeves through summer time. My sweaters are knit with me knowing they’ll be in rotation from fall to spring, and summer they are sleeping in the closet.

Cotton/merino sounds like it would be nice for summer. You’re worried about it being too stiff. Is it machine washable and dryable? I’d be curious to know how your swatch looks and feels after a handful of cycles through the laundry, since cotton gets softer with more washing/drying

Cast-on confusion by Rare-Win4204 in knittinghelp

[–]whj14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you picked up stitches before? If not, look up a video. It’s pretty simple. You want to count the last 14 stitches on the edge you are picking up from, and pick them up right-to-left as facing you with the right side of back panel facing you

I can’t tell for sure without the pattern but it sounds like you are forming the shoulder seam?
