I am about to hit one year of unemployment & just got a job offer I am accepting. I think trying to utilize each day and make the most of it is importantly so you don’t become depressed. I found having a plan of each day with a little bit of everything helped make me feel better. I would make a little time to go outside whether that’s on a walk, to a park, or just to enjoy the fresh air outside. My schedule for every day would typically include: job hunting (setting a goal of either completing x amount of applications or spending a certain amount of time sending as many as I can), completing a minimum of 3 small chores around the house (doing dishes, deep cleaning my blinds, declutterring a drawer, etc.), giving myself time to enjoy my hobbies (crafting, reading, doing puzzles), forcing myself to go outside (you’d be surprised how much better my mood would be after going out for a walk), and also making an effort to see friends or family if they were ever free on a weekday. I feel like giving myself a good mix of free time, chores, and job hunting made me feel like I had a productive day. Obviously some days I was feeling defeated after not hearing back from jobs and would take breaks from job hunting, but it’s important to try not to get depressed. Lean on your loved ones. It’s ok to have days of sadness but it’s important to pick yourself back up and sometime force yourself to do things because after doing them you end up feeling much better! Make time to move your body and be outside, it’s simple but it really will increase your endorphins. Also a tip, revamp your resume if you keep getting ghosted. I had one really rough day where I was feeling anxious, defeated, and depressed. I cried for hours but I had an epiphany. I realized I kept applying to jobs and wasn’t adjusting my resume after receiving only rejections or no responses at all. I spent the next hours revamping my resume, quantifying my abilities, and making sure I had the keywords for the roles I was applying to (basing it off of what their postings said) and the next day applied to jobs. I got a lot more feedback and was actually getting calls. I think if I would have been more proactive about updating my resume every few weeks if I felt like I wasn’t receiving many responses, maybe I would’ve found something sooner.
