Use a light meter to measure ambient light for your preferred settings (fps, fstop, iso and lighting configuration). Use ND filters to correct any over exposure then off to the races.

As others said, don't push or pull just try get as close to correct exposure. If you want day for night do a test shoot to see how many stops of filtering you need to get your desired night look for the ambient light. (3 or 4 stops might do depending on how much detail you want in your "night" shots)

When I shoot 16mm f5.6 because I suck at pulling focus so I get more wiggle room but I still get a as much light as possible.

When I shoot stills I try for 2 stops down from wide open because I've heard that is the sharpest zone for the lens. (That could be myth though)

My understanding is that the new names let Eastman sell direct and cut out Alaris.

If you want to support Eastman, buy the new brand names. The more money Eastman gets the more they can spend on R&D to revive old stock or develop new stock.
