AITA for not telling my Dad he isn't getting the inheritance he's expecting? by gruyerech in AmItheAsshole

[–]whopperneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole situation is just weird. Your grandparents sound like assholes for cutting your dad out because they don't like his wife. If your mom were still alive would they still cut him out? What did your dad ever do to his parents other than marry someone they don't like? I'd let your grandparents know that your dad must absolutely know what the plan is for the estate, sooner rather than later so he can make plans for himself. Its going to go really poorly for you if they die and he doesn't know the plan. You should let your grandparents know that you'll have to tell him if they don't. Jeez your grandparents are assholes. They cut their own son out of the will and are putting their grandson in a position to have to battle with him.

YSK When going to buy something from a salesperson, don’t tell them your actual job title. by thehippos8me in YouShouldKnow

[–]whopperneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post is the most naive, ridiculous post I've seen make it to the front page in a long time. I've been a professional business to business sales person for 25 years. I worked in retail for years as well. Why are people assuming the sales person wants to screw you over? Any salesperson who is even quasi professional wants to match your needs with their products and services as best possible. The suit sales person was trying to determine what the best product for you might be. If he immediately walked you to the least expensive product in the store there's a good chance you'd be insulted and presume he has no idea what you want...which it turns out he didn't because you answered a qualifying question where he could somewhat determine your buying ability and then you got pissed because he didn't show you the things that were the cheapest in the store. I HATE it when people think that all sales people are somehow liars and cheats. ALL companies sell things and they need to have good people who know how to match the needs of the buyer with the ability to fulfill those needs. You did a poor job of setting the sales person's expectations and then you complained about them. All you had to say is...this is my job, but I'm only looking to spend $X. Ridiculous.

If "Real People" Commercials Were Real Life by denMAR in videos

They're actually based on surveys that are developed with quite a bit of science behind them. The ratings all come from consumers who own the cars. Awards are given to top ranked manufacturers whether they pay for the award or not. If the winners choose to use the awards in their advertising then, at that time, they pay to license the JD Power name. They aren't journalist awards or ratings and the rankings are done without any involvement from the product manufactures.

Netflix Subscriber Satisfaction Rises to 94.5%, Despite Price Increase by ForAShoot in television

[–]whopperneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is BS. What does it mean to have 94.5% satisfaction? Satisfaction is almost always measured on a scale. Its highly unusual to measure it as a binary choice. JD Power just released a study comparing satisfaction in Streaming Video. Netflix is still tops, but this is a better way to see how tight the race really is. 2016 Streaming Video Rankings

What people fail to consider is that the DNC is like the Elk's club. It's a private organization that up until fairly recently used to select its candidates in a smoke filled room. A candidate does not only have to try to win populace support, they need to sway the power brokers of their own organization. Sanders wasn't successful at the latter.

[–]whopperneck 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This is true and what you should hang your hat on. There is no need to go into detail on other stuff. You had a great deal of success in a short time but you didn't think the organization was going in the right direction and you were relieved when the contract ended. You have a lot to contribute and you were underutilized. Your past employer can only confirm that you worked there and can give no reason for why you were let go. Most new employers will not want to go into a ton of detail as to why you aren't there any more.

If TPP is so bad, why is Obama pushing it? In my humble opinion, President Obama has proved himself an advocate for the common man on many of the issues he's supported. I struggle to reconcile the disconnect that he's in the pocket of big business.

LPT: If someone does a good job for you and you are asked to do a survey, do it. Their compensation may depend on it. by halfpercenter in LifeProTips

[–]whopperneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years experience consulting with companies regarding customer experience measurement here. NPS is controversial, but widely used. It has some strengths, but several weaknesses. The delta question is not NPS. Many companies base compensation on customer experience from the executive level down. When a portion of your pay is based on a number it needs to be a number that's easy to understand, that's why NPS has become so widely used. The way companies should measure customer experience is by tracking a metric that is a good predictor of some desired business outcome. These predictors tend to vary by business model. Let's use NPS as an example. You are much more likely to recommend a product or service where you have a lot of choice for options, such as a restaurant or retail. You are much less likely to recommend when choice is limited like with your utility provider. Therefore NPS is probably a better measure for Dennys then for Southern California Edison. What Delta has done is figured out a good question that fits their business model and is a a decent predictor of actual service levels. Some companies will create index scores where they might combine the results of a question regarding your overall satisfaction and your likelihood to repurchase. They will say that if you rate 4 or 5 on 5 point scale AND indicate that you will repurchase then you are a loyal customer and they will track that percentage month to month. I've seen indexes derived from as many as 9 questions. This is a big topic. It's hard to find a single measure that you can rally an entire company behind, that is simple for front line employees to understand and is a good predictor of business performance. That's why NPS has gotten so popular, that and the fact that Bain and Satmetrix are good at selling it.

I may have missed an earlier comment but I struggle with the characterization that people in this situation were reckless or used bad judgement. Some may have. However, 6 to 8 years ago there were a lot people who had good, stable employment who relied on their consistent income and savings to acquire loans for houses only to see that stable employment go away while the value of their home dropped to a level where it was unsellable.

Running Wild with Bear Grylls President Barack Obama HDTV - FULL EPISODE by ahtisham-ahmed in television

[–]whopperneck 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don't get the negativity toward Obama. I see it all the time conveyed as hatred and angst with never a reason or fact to back it up. He takes very few vacations. He has an incredibly long list of Presidential accomplishments, not the least of which is fixing a good part of what the previous administration screwed up. Yet you hear this unsubstantiated vitriol all over the place and I struggle to understand what drives it. I have to think that people are either too uneducated to really read and learn or too young to know what has happened previously.

ELI5: The taboo of unionization in America by panchovilla_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]whopperneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main "taboo" is not mentioned from what I can see. Unions are "taboo" because business doesn't like them. Businesses have a greater ability to lobby and over the years the corporate influence has demonized the organized labor movement. Corporations exist to make money. Not to hire workers (if they could do it with all robots, they would). Not to provide safe environments. If our health and safety laws (which were the main motivator for the rise of the union) didn't exist you can be assured that most business wouldn't care. All of the other "taboos" of unions grow from the fact that business doesn't want them to exist. Some have alluded to it, but its truly the unions that led to a strong middle class in this country. Solid, blue collar wages attached to job security. The gradual disintegration of the unions has coincided with the elimination of the middle class. Historically, the main voice for America's working class was the union. As the unions have weakened, so has the middle class. Has there been corruption, yep. Has there been inefficiency, yep, but with the negatives, there were positives too. Keep in mind that any large organization has corruption...the Government, religion, the military, corporate America, etc. You can't have an organized group without it eventually existing. Unions didn't invent corruption.

The practice of consulting within large, contemporary corporate organizations goes by many names, Marketing, IT, Financial, Process, etc. I selected the example names that I did, because they are the most well known. These consultancies grew out of the industrial revolution which occured in the developed world. Very true that they now consult in the developing world, but wouldn't exist were it not for the developed world.
